Galle Harbour Maritime Archaeological Impact Assessment Report for Sri Lankan Department of Archaeology Ross Anderson, Jeremy Green and Corioli Souter Western Australian Museum, Department of Maritime Archaeology Report–Department of Maritime Archaeology, Western Australian Museum, No. 235. 2007 Background Following discussions between the Sri Lankan Department of Archaeology (SLDA) and Department of Maritime Archaeology, Western Australian Museum (WAM), WAM was engaged as a consultant to undertake a maritime archaeological survey of Galle Harbour as part of an Archaeological Impact Assessment (AIA) process. The scope of the consultancy was to carry out a maritime archaeological survey, and provide a report to the SLDA outlining the impact of the proposed Galle port development on the underwater cultural heritage of Galle Harbour. The survey took place between 14 November and 2 December 2007. WAM has been involved in maritime archaeological investigations in Galle Harbour since 1992. Previous work includes: remote sensing surveys, site inspections and excavation of shipwrecks. Remote sensing and diving search projects undertaken in 1992, 1993 and 1996 resulted in the location of a range of significant maritime heritage sites in the harbour including Arab-Indian stone anchors, the VOC wrecks of the Avondster (1659) and Hercules (1661) and 19th century iron steamship wrecks. Due to advances since 1997 in position-fixing and remote sensing techniques, it was necessary to resurvey the proposed port development area to accurately position and identify possible sites to be impacted by the development. Existing GPS positions were only accurate to 200 m as a result of GPS Selective Availability (decommissioned in 2000). As part of the contractual agreement between WAM and the Sri Lankan Department of Archaeology, this report is to be submitted to the Sri Lankan Department of Archaeology by 17 December 2007. -

Founded in 1979, the SLPA has grown to be a leader in the world of shipping and commerce, a respected organisation where governance, environmental responsibility and our commitment to the future of Sri Lanka and its people have guided our voyage of success. The Port of Colombo has been administered since 1913 by the Colombo Port Commission, which is responsible for the supply and maintenance of cargo-handling equipment and other infrastructure, pilotage services, docking and shipping. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority was constituted under the provisions of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Act, No. 15 of 1979 (subsequently amended by Act No. 7 of 1984 and Act No. 35 of 1984) on the 1st of August 1979, effecting the merger of the Colombo Port Commission Department and the two existing statutory Corporations. -

Figure 8-16 Warehouse Logistics Process Three main flows can be identified: • Incoming flow: products or goods discharged from a truck or unloaded from a container. • Warehousing cargo flow: storage of the palletised goods within the warehouse and – if applicable – registration/follow-up of additional value added activities like re-packing, labelling, price-marking, etc. • Outgoing flow: products or goods leaving the warehouse via truck or loaded into a container. The use of pallets is one of the basic and most fundamental requirements of modern warehousing activities and operations. All incoming cargo or products that are not yet palletised need to be stacked on (standardised) pallets during or directly after unloading a truck or un-stuffing a container. A dedicated follow-up of pallet stock management is of paramount importance to carry on the logistics activities. After palletising the goods, the content of each pallet needs to be inventoried and this data needs to flow into the warehouse management system. -

Final Regional Cooperation for Inclusive
South and South-West Asia remains one of the fastest growing subregions in the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific world even though its economic growth has slowed down in 2012 due to a South and South-West Asia Office deteriorating global economic environment. Although the subregion continues to push the world's economic centre of gravity to the East, as India is on track to become the world's second largest economy by 2050, it faces many challenges to making the development process more inclusive and sustainable. These include widespread poverty and hunger, poor levels of human development, wide infrastructure gaps, food and energy insecurity and the threat of natural disasters. In addition, the subregion's least developed and landlocked developing South and South- countries face unusual obstacles. Regional Cooperation The South and South-West Asia Development Report argues that regional cooperation can help solve many of the subregion's challenges and help secure a for Inclusive and more sustainable future. In the decade ahead, the subregion's member States have a chance to cooperate amongst themselves to ensure that their dynamism Sustainable Development and development success are sustained, and that the subregion re-emerges as the hub of East–West trade that it once was. As a development partner of South and South-West Asia, now with a new Office South and South-West Asia dedicated to the subregion, ESCAP in this Report highlights elements of a regional W est Asia Development R policy agenda for harnessing the potential of cooperation in select areas. Development Report 2012–13 The South and South-West Asia Development Report will be an essential resource for policymakers, development professionals, economists, as well as those concerned with development in South and South-West Asia and beyond. -

Physical Research Laboratory, Navarangpura, Ahmedabad, India Abstract Investigations in 2010 by an international team of maritime archaeologists yielded a concentration of artefacts identified by the authors as the remains of a shipwreck off the southern coastal village of Godawaya, Sri Lanka. The major findings from this site include many quern stones, various types of ceramics, and glass ingots. The comparative study of the artefacts from the Godawaya site and terrestrial sites of Sri Lanka and India suggest that the ship might have been originated from the southern part of the Indian subcontinent. Based on analysis of the artefacts and radiocarbon dating of wood fragments from the site, a broad date of 2nd BCE to 2st centuries CE is assigned to the assemblage, assigning it to the early historical period. Thus, this is the earliest known and as yet investigated shipwreck in South Asia. Keywords: Sri Lanka, quern stones, Black and Red Ware, glass ingots, Early historic shipwreck 1.0 Introduction The strategic location of Sri Lanka in the northern centre of the Indian Ocean allowed it to develop to a great extent during the medieval period (8th to 14th centuries) as a centre of maritime commercial interfaces between East and West, from East Asia to the Persian Gulf, Arabian Peninsula and African continent (Hourani 1995, Tampoe 1990, Bopearachchi 1996).The island, however, played an important role in earlier and later periods (Ray 2003:117). -
