Dear All,

There’s an old Middle Eastern curse which says ‘May you live in interesting times!’ (There’s also one which says ‘May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits!’ But to return to the first one –) we are certainly living in ‘interesting times’. We’re having to learn new skills and are experiencing new things. We have to experiment with different ways of doing things.

The Annual Readers’ Celebration service usually held at the Cathedral had to go onto Zoom this year. It took a very different format, but it was excellent.

I missed my retreat in June because of lockdown. So this month, I tried one on-line. I wasn’t at all sure how it would work out because I thought that, being at home, there’d be too many distractions – the phone ringing, emails to answer, and jobs around the house that needed doing. However the Northumbria Community produced a very useful ‘planning your retreat’ video with helpful suggestions about limiting time spent on emails, television and news broadcasts. I’m still limiting the news broadcasts!

The retreat itself was very restful. I love the Northumbria Community services. It’s what we use for the on-line Morning Prayer on a Wednesday. (If you want to try it, let Debbie in St Mary’s Office have your email address, and she’ll send you the weekly bulletin with the necessary link in it.)

What came out of the retreat for me was the word ‘unshackled’. In a time when we are shackled by restrictions on social gatherings and, in some places, with limited freedom of movement, it seemed an out-of-place word. But on reflection, I realised that when we first went into lockdown, my weekly structure disappeared and, after initially enjoying the freedom – getting the garden straight and catching up on the DIY – I found it hard not having much to do, so was tempted to look for tasks to fill the void. What my retreat time reminded me was that I didn’t have to shackle myself with activity; I could just take time to ‘be’, to wander round the garden enjoying the plants instead of noting the weeds, to walk on the beach or by the river looking and listening to God’s world. As lockdown eased, so some things are starting up again. But I need to keep in mind that even when we are shackled by Covid 19, we can still chose to be unshackled in our approach to daily life.

If this resonates with you, try an unshackled hour a day putting the ‘I must’ and ‘I ought to’ aside and just enjoy ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’. God bless you and keep you safe.

EDITORIAL

Dear Readers,

Please feel free to send me any photos / poems / thoughts / “thank- yous”/ stories / ideas or anything else you might like to share for the next issue of the Crosslet. All will be welcomed.

Please send them to me at:- [email protected] From the Parish Registers

Mollie Grant was laid to rest at St. Swithun's Littleham on Friday 18th September 2020. May she rest in peace as we remember her and her family.

Nick Beckley was laid to rest at St. Swithun’s Littleham on Saturday 19th September. We remember him and all who loved him. May he rest in peace. Thank-yous

Big thanks are due to all our lovely churchyard volunteers who have kept our churchyards looking so beautiful over the summer. We are really grateful for their gifts of generosity and expertise. Many people have commented on how well-kept the churchyards are, and we have been able to experiment a little with leaving uncut areas which looked absolutely stunning and featured in our online services.

Thanks are due to as well to our stalwart wider community volunteers who have helped steward our services, clean our churches, support the marking of VE and VJ day – you know who you are and we have been touched by your offers of support. (more thankyous p.18) Memorial services

This year our usual 4 parish Memorial service will be marked in a different way, due to the restricted numbers our churches can accommodate at present. All those who have lost loved ones in the last 18 months will be invited to submit their names to be included in a memorial section of our on-line service on Sunday 1st November, when we celebrate the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls. Everyone who is normally contacted about the service will receive a card to say we are thinking of you at this time and will include you in our prayers during this Season of Remembering. November is the time when we remember those dear to us and also the fallen – a time for reflection and quiet, as our earth prepares for her winter sleep. But the buds of spring can already be seen on branches and we look forward in hope to the coming of the Christ child in dark days – a renewal of life and hope and the promise that we will be reunited together in heaven. 5

Further information and an online application form can be accessed via this link www.torridge.gov.uk/testandtracesupportscheme from 8am on Monday 12th October Cribs and Christmas

Well in these difficult times, I’m very glad to tell you that Christmas IS happening. We will always celebrate ‘The Reason for the Season’.

So, here are some of the plans we have to bring Advent and Christmas to you and offer some cheer and encouragement.

We will be providing: a 5 parish digital service for Advent; an Advent Taize from Landcross; our December service from St. George’s Monkleigh; thoughtful reflections on the challenges and realities of Christmas 2020; socially-distanced and number limited LIVE carol singers; online Christingles and Nativities for our schools and communities; a specially commissioned Crib service from St. Swithun’s Littleham, which will go live on YouTube on Christmas Eve afternoon; a beautiful and intimate candlelit celebration of Midnight Mass from Holy Trinity Landcross you can join again on YouTube; and live services at Littleham and Weare Giffard on Christmas morning.

Normally our churches would be decorated with flowers, candles and a Christmas tree – and most importantly, a Crib. The Crib is blessed and the figure of the Babe added at the Christmas Eve Communion. It then remains in place throughout Epiphany into January. This year we would like to bring the Crib out to you. So we are looking for volunteers to help create the Crib figures (see photo). These are very simple, made from a large felt ball, coat hangers and material. We’d like to put these crib scenes in each village, and so we need gifted DIYers to help build a platform (could be a loaned trailer) and some form of shelter – ideally three sides and a roof. From the roof we’ll suspend rows of string to which you can attach angels (from a template) with messages for loved ones and family/friends/the world at this time. You could also include a prayer, which would be prayed at Midnight Mass. There’ll also be an ‘Angel’ competition – submit online photos of your Angel paintings, 8

photos, collages, knitted figures or whatever inspires you and we’ll pick four winners to be shown in our online services (to the Vicar at [email protected]).

The church waits in expectation during Advent (December) and then rejoices with the angels, shepherds, Kings, Mary and Joseph at the arrival of the Babe – who brings restoration and hope. Our Christmas this year will be different – but the hope and joy of it cannot be suppressed. Revd. Marisa

Maggie’s Homemade Jams and Marmalades

I have been very busy over the last few months with the bumper fruit harvest making jams and marmalades.

Alternatively, phone me 01237 477568 or email me with your order: [email protected] and I will arrange with you to deliver, or for you to collect from me. Free delivery to the villages for all orders of £10.00 and over.

Flavours include: Gooseberry, Raspberry, Strawberry and Tropical fruit, Mango and Pineapple, Black Cherry, Mixed Berry, Black Grape, Orange Marmalade, Black Cherry with Lavender, Plum, Plum with Lavender, Apricot, Mixed Berry Jam, Lemon Curd, Redcurrant Jam, Mixed Fruit (there are probably some I have forgotten).

Parsonage Woods

When Parsonage Woods was put up for sale I think all of us who use the woods were concerned about its future. I decided to apply to Torridge District Council for a Group TPO (A Tree Protection Order which would cover the whole 10 acre woodland).

TDC carried out a full survey of the wood and I have now received the Formal Report from the Planning Officer. A Group TPO has not been awarded because, as the Officer explained, the wood is not at present being threatened. It has, however, been given a TPO Defensible Score of 13 – that’s very high. This means that if the wood faces any type of threat in the future, this decision will be reviewed and a Group TPO can be given. So if anyone decides to buy the wood to exploit its resources, TDC can then grant a Group TPO. This is the best result we could have hoped for as Group TPOs are rarely granted unless a woodland is in immediate danger.

It’s a pity that the offer for the woodland made by a long term resident in the village was not accepted as this would have guaranteed the future of this much loved broadleaved woodland, a resource few villages are blessed with.

TREE BOWL IN THE YEO

Last Winter when the river flooded the base of a tree came down the river and got stuck among the stones near our garden. It remained during lockdown so I decided I ought to try to paint it in the style of Graham Sutherland as it reminded me of some if his paintings.

My first effort was a watercolour. Then I tried oils. More work needed I think!

During the weekend of 2/3 October, as we watched the river, during the heavy rain the log started to move downstream. It wobbled and turned slowly, then gathered pace and descended rapidly, but it then got stuck at the barbed wire which stops the cows going down the river - you can just see it in in the last photo.

It's gone now, maybe down to the Torridge and then the sea, or maybe it got stuck again somewhere.

The Cheeky Toad

When I was walking down the road I came across a great big Toad He winked at me with one large eye And asked if I would share my pie How very odd, a strange request To share my pie, whatever next Oh well its best to be polite I’ll let him have a little bite Oh horror, then to my dismay He grabbed the pie and ran away Next time I see a frog or toad I think I’ll quickly cross the road Restoration of Cockerel Or else I’ll wave my magic wand And send him off back to the pond Many thanks to Kenny Wood for his magnificent repair

work to the weathervane (see above) and also to Wilf Smith and Ian Mitchell for their help in hoisting it on high again. Hopefully it will last for many years to come and weather many more storms without incident. by Juliet Percival (The Bard of Littleham)

LITTLEHAM & LANDCROSS PARISH COUNCIL.

The parish council meeting was held virtually on Zoom on October 1st. The majority of parish councillors were able to attend together with both the county councillor, Linda Hellyer and district councillor, Philip Pennington.

Meetings will continue to be held on zoom for the foreseeable future until things return to some sort of normality. Anyone wishing to attend the meetings can email the clerk for the meeting details. Discussions were held regarding the shed at the village hall which holds the salt supply for wintery conditions. It was agreed that a new shed would be purchased and that we would get someone to erect it.

As usual the main meeting was taken up by discussions on planning applications. These included an appeal for holiday accommodation at Littlemoor, a cabin for a business selling bridal dresses at Barn View, Littleham and the relocation of entrance ramp and creation of multi- purpose function room facility, Riverside Cottage, Bideford. The parish have been consulted on the Government reforms on planning, at this stage there is not much to comment on. Both the district councillor and the county councillor presented reports to the meeting and invited questions. On highway issues it was reported the road into Littleham is due to have works carried out in the current financial year.

Other general discussions related to councillor/clerk training, the finance and emails circulated to parish councillors.

The council has received correspondence from the Kenwith Company of Archers about acts of vandalism at their premises near Moorhead Cross. This isn’t the first time this has happened and the police have been informed. If you see anything suspicious in this area can you please inform the Police or a Parish Councillor.

There is currently one vacancy on the parish council for Littleham and one for Landcross. If anyone is interested in joining please let the clerk know and attend the next meeting which is on November 5th.

Please contact our parish clerk, Debbie on  07971 159522 or email [email protected]

MONKLEIGH Harvest Thank-You!

To all who took part in the 5 parish Harvest service; special mention to Sally Goodger, Charlie Boundy, Ross Hedden and staff at Monkleigh School for their time, hard work and encouragement. Revd Marisa Monkleigh School

As we head towards Half Term I have to say how impressed I am with all the children at school. They have adapted so well to the different ways that we have to do things and are amazing.

I stand at the school gate every morning for our four different drop off times for our four different bubbles and it is lovely to see the children who literally run into school with a smile on their faces.

I often hear the Grownups at the gate calling goodbye and wishing their child a good day only to be met by a disappearing back as they go rushing into school, then the Grown up looks and me and often smiles and says ‘ well its lovely to see how happy they are to be here!’ And indeed they are, they are happy to be back and to be with their friends and are all working so hard.

The staff are also doing a fantastic job in making sure that we keep everyone safe and at the same time happy.

We don’t have a great deal of news as unfortunately we are not having sporting fixtures, visitors or trips out but the children are enjoying wonderful well planned lessons, exciting topics and embracing life in their own little bubbles!

So well done Team Monkleigh!

Winter’s greetings to everyone (it is winter already right?!) We’ve had our open fire lit many times in the last few weeks, so I think that makes it official.

We have also introduced our new lunch menu, which includes a full English breakfast. You can choose between a Sally’s breakfast or a Roy’s – they’re sized small and large accordingly! We also have jacket potatoes, breakfast baps and pub classics such as ham, egg and chips 18

available from 12.30pm to 2pm.

We’re busy planning our Christmas menu, which we will have on offer on certain dates in November and December. In the likelihood of the current Covid restrictions still being in place, including the 10pm curfew, we’ll be doing one sitting per evening, with a starter platter for the table and then a traditional turkey roast with all the trimmings. This will be followed by a choice of delicious desserts. It will be bookings only and pre-orders, to ensure no one is disappointed. We’ll be putting the full details on our website and Facebook page soon – but do call  01805 938285 if you would like to pencil in a date!

Otherwise (all restrictions permitting) we’d love to see you for drinks, a meal or just a coffee and chat – it’s more important than ever to connect with others and spend time with friends and family and we would love to host you safely to meet up with those you care about.

WEARE GIFFARD COMMUNITY ORCHARD

A short note to inform you all that as from the proposed Orchard’s AGM – Sunday 15th November, but now deferred due to C19, I will not be seeking re-election for the position of Chair.

I always said I would give the orchard project at least 5 years and I am just finishing my 6th, but that apart, I now need to turn my attention inwards a bit, and look after my lovely new wife – Heather, and perhaps even give myself a break – I have just reached 80 after all!!! As a tree owner I will obviously still remain a member, and may well allow myself to be conned into very minor orchard duties!!

In standing down I must say to you all, what a great project this is, for without your initial and continued support, we would not now have what we do have - a unique 37 apple tree orchard; all trees very healthy; a strong active core (pun here!!) group; and finances are also reasonable. What we have achieved is not just an orchard, but a heritage orchard, replacing one there 180-200+ years ago; but also today, creating an environment wherein one can sit and think, stare and even meditate – yes, and even grow apples!!

Again, my very sincere thanks for supporting me as your Chair.

My very best wishes, Keith. (Hughes)

TRY THIS

How smart is your right foot?

This is so amusing you just have to try. It is absolutely true. I guess there are some things the brain cannot handle.

1. While sitting on a chair, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles. 2. Now, while doing this, draw number 6 in the air with your right hand.

Your foot will change direction. Told you so! And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, But before the day is out you are going to try it again, if you have not already done so.

Thanks to Daphne Horton for this fun fact!

Takeaway Breakfast Rolls - Weare Giffard Village Hall

A huge thank you for your support over the past few months during these difficult times. The takeaway breakfasts are proving to be as popular as ever. It is unfortunate that we haven’t been able to introduce table and chairs. We still have a meat raffle. The village hall lottery is also being drawn and the winners every month are published in the Crosslet.

As we have been unable to have our Christmas dinner this year we thought we’d have Christmas takeaway rolls on Sat 12 Dec. This is from 12 till 2 pm. The menu will consist of turkey/chicken, sausage, stuffing and cranberry sauce in a roll, a mince pie or homemade cake, and a Christmas cracker with a difference. (some will have extra gifts in). The cost will be £5 This is a pre-order service only please phone Tracy  01237 422148 or Jen  01237 479594 before the 10 Dec . We will be having our breakfast rolls on Sat 5th December 10 till 12.

With forthcoming US Elections in mind

Old politicians never die – they just run once too often.

A local council official said that he ran for office again because he thought his possible opponent, if successful, might be even more ineffective than he was.

Admirer to political candidate: “Great speech, sir! I really like the straightforward way you dodged those issues.”

Miscellaneous musings modern life...

In filling out an application, where it says, 'In case of emergency, notify:' I put 'DOCTOR.' Member of the congregation to minister: “I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.” Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then, your body and your fat are really good friends. Where there's a will, there are relatives. 23
