Dear Friends,

We’ll soon be into the preparations for Christmas. As I’m writing this, we don’t know what that will look like, and Christmas is probably going to be difficult for many people this year. In our churches we continue to pray for each other and our communities, for the NHS, for our own and for the world.

Advent is the time of preparation for Christians – it’s a very special time of waiting and watching. Christ comes as a light into the darkness of the world – many Nativity paintings echo this theme. Advent looks back to the Patriarchs and Prophets of the Jewish faith and forward to what Christians believe are the enduring promises of God to be with us, and suffer with us, in all things. Just as we commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus in our Eucharist, so we commemorate the joy of his birth, which can’t be dimmed and provides us with hope even in dark days.

It’s been a roller coaster for the Ministry team in recent days, with the closure of our churches for a second time and the restriction on Remembrance Sunday and other services. I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all our veterans and serving officers who gave up their time so generously to go around the parishes, to help lead the service and to read lessons and prayers for us. Your help and support was very much appreciated.

In a mad few days we also pre-recorded a number of our Christmas services in case further restrictions prevented us getting together for services at Christmas time. The introduction of a full- sized (human) inflatable turkey into the Christingle story was an interesting twist… In the midst of everything, we’d forgotten to have fun.

It’s prompted us to set up Christmas ‘socials’ for the team and our PCCs. We’re also hoping to set up cribs in our parishes, and if possible, some Covid-safe carol singing. We have planned for some of our Christmas services to continue on-line (see the back page for details) and are hoping that we may be able to have some live services in due course.

If you would like to hear the Christmas story in a blend of readings, poems and Carols, then do join our Zoom Carol service(s) to have a good sing-a- long at home (with nibbles and a glass of mulled wine or spiced orange as well). You can get a link from the Church Office on  01237 474078.

Andrew and others will keep us updated on community social media about what is happening, so do look out for these announcements in the early part of December. And here we must say another huge thank you to Andrew for all his expertise and support not only with the Crosslet, but so many other projects. Andrew, we would be lost without you, your support and cheerfulness has been invaluable. 4

Christmas will happen in spite of Covid – and the blessings it brings are love, family, compassion and care for others, a marking of the turning of the year from darkness to light, and the remembering of hope. Some will have been hit by loss, bereavement, anxiety or financial worries – we remember you and pray for you. Some will have seen the new joy of a grandchild, a marriage, a new and rewarding stage in an existing relationship. Some may have experienced something of each. God speaks to us in all that we experience:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”’

My hope is that you will find something of the spirit of Christmas to cheer you in these difficult times and that however we find ourselves sharing it with family, friends or others we love we remember to tell them how much they mean to us.

So go for it – put up the tree, drape the kitchen in lights, give generously to charity, phone a friend, belt out some Christmas hits, indulge your Christmas fancies – and do join us for Carols, the Crib service and the Midnight Mass on line – we’d love to see you….

If anyone sees an adult-size inflatable turkey disguised as a local vicar, do let us know – we’ve lost one…

EDITORIAL

Dear Readers,

We have decided to keep the Crosslet as an online publication for the immediate future but may review this later next year. Consequently the £5 subscription charge will be waived for 2021. This also means that distributors are not put at any risk having to come round and collect subscriptions in person. I hope you all understand this.

On a sad note, I’m very sorry to announce that Reverend Gordon Hansford has passed away. Gordon was Rector of the four parishes from 1986 to 1999. He served these villages well and will be fondly remembered by many of you. We send our condolences to Jean and the family. Andrew ANNOUNCEMENT RE ECCLESIASTICAL INSURANCE SCHEME

Many of you will know that our churches have been hit hard financially by extended closures. Our PCCs are working really hard to do all they can, including coming up with some really brilliant and innovative fund-raising ideas. But you can help too, whether by giving a donation or setting up a modest direct debit – or if any insurances are coming up for renewal, by exploring the cover from Ecclesiastical insurance, which covers many of our churches but also provides domestic and other policies. Ecclesiastical is a financial services group that exists to give its profits to charity – you can browse their website here: https://www.ecclesiastical.com/corporate-responsibility

For each new home insurance policy, clients can nominate their local church to receive a payment from Ecclesiastical of £130.00. One such payment might cover 50% of the monthly deficit of one of our churches, so do please consider this as a way of supporting the presence of the church in your community.

“For every new home insurance policy taken out with us, we’re donating £130 to a church or cathedral of the policyholder’s choice through our Trust130 promotion.

Small donations making a big impact

Since 2018, we have donated over £410,000 to churches chosen by our customers through this promotion. We are delighted that so many churches have benefitted so far, and to help more churches take advantage of these donations we have extended the offer to run throughout next year, ending 31 December 2021. Find out how to take advantage of this offer on our home insurance page. 6

These donations have already made a massive difference to churches and cathedrals across the country, and while £130 might not sound like a vast sum, these donations can make a big difference to churches large and small. Many churches have also benefitted from multiple donations as more than one member of the congregation has taken up the offer.

Chilli Apple jelly. Windfall apples, Granulated sugar, Thanks to Monica Roker for this Chilli flakes recipe! (Ed.)

• Chop windfall apples skin and core into a large saucepan wash and drain, add water to just cover and bring to the boil, then simmer until apples have gone to a pulp.

• Remove from heat and let get cold.

• When cold pour into a jelly bag and leave to drain over night into a container of some sorts!

• Measure juice and to every pint add a pound of gran sugar and a rounded teaspoon of chilli flakes. (I use jam sugar.)

• Bring to the boil when sugar has dissolved and boil until a set is reached. • P.S. I usually taste a bit off the spoon before it actually reaches setting point and add more chilli if not quite fiery enough!!!

• Cool for 10-15 minutes then stir to make sure the chilli flakes are not on the surface, pour into warmed jars and seal.

Good with cold meats, cheese and stirred through pasta! 9

Exciting News

A trial to boost re-use of electrical items is taking place at five Household Waste Recycling Centres The project, funded by the electricals industry to encourage the re-use of electrical items, will initially focus on flat screen TVs, vacuum cleaners and lighting. In 2018/19, over 7,200 tonnes of electrical items were recycled through Devon’s recycling centres and the trial aims to go one step further and capture any items that are still in good working order to keep them in circulation for longer.

The nearest participating trial site is: Bideford Recycling Centre

Residents arriving at participating recycling centres with flat screen TVs, vacuum cleaners or lighting will now be asked by site staff if the item is still working and in good condition.

Items that can be reused will be PAT tested by trained site staff and then made available in the site’s reuse shop for the public to buy, along with furniture, bric-a-brac and other re-useable household items. Non-working electrical items and any failing the testing procedure will be recycled.

It is estimated that following the testing process, 33% of TVs, 50% of vacuums and 72% of lighting/lamps will be suitable to re-use, meaning an additional 48 tonnes of electrical goods will be re-used per year at participating sites.

Public demand for re-sale shops to include electrical items has grown as budget savvy shoppers embrace the cost savings of buying re-usable goods, whilst also benefiting the environment.

The grant funding has helped provide workshop and testing facilities as well as staff training to allow re-useable items to be function and safety tested prior to re-sale. It is anticipated that the scheme will be self- financing going forward which will help keep it going.

Subject to the success of the initial 5 site roll-out, other sites and other electrical items could be added to the scheme in future to further boost re- use in Devon. For more information visit www.recycledevon.org 10

LANDCROSS Taize

Our next Taize Service will be on the 1st Thursday of December (3rd) at 7.00pm. You can find it by going to the St Mary's website. https://stmaryschurchbideford.org April Saltmarsh 4 Parish online Remembrance Service

Thank you very much Rev’d Marisa and the whole team for creating a really lovely Remembrance Service for Sunday 8th November. It was a real community tribute.

All 4 Parishes had the laying of wreaths at our respective churches recorded in advance. On behalf of Landcross I would like to say a special thank you to Bernard and Gary for placing the wreath in our porch where the names of those men from Landcross who fought in the 1st World War are inscribed on a plaque: The 3 Oliver brothers, who lived right by the Church; and Herbert Clarke. Also, from the First World War, but not recorded here, we remember Ernest James Lamb, a pilot.

Our second wreath, provided by Jean Mc’Ginley, daughter, was laid in memory of William James Marshall who served in the Royal Navy in the Second World War and was lost at sea.

We are proud to remember them and all those in our 4Parishes who gave their lives in World Wars. Birthday Surprise

This year, my birthday (on 1st November) was a bit more unusual than others. Sam and Theo are at that fantastic age when they are bursting with excitement about an impending celebration and they certainly managed to surprise me with lots of lovely wrapping, cards and thoughtful gifts. But it was Robin who surprised me most when he said, ‘I 12

think today will be a day you will always remember’. ‘How lovely’ I thought. It was a bit of a shock to be advised to, ‘get your Christmas jumper … we’re off to Littleham!’

Then all was revealed. Due to the Government’s second scheduled lockdown, the clergy team had decided that everyone should meet (socially- distanced) and film a speedy version of the Christingle and Nativity at St Swithun's before 5th November and today was the day. It was a lot of fun. Everyone looked very festive, particularly Kevin Beer but I don’t want any ‘spoilers’ before the final showing but he was hilarious and definitely a ‘must-see’ when it goes on YouTube.

Theo was by now very confused of course. He’d already ‘done Christmas’ (check, as he says) by the start of November and he and Sam hadn’t even had a sniff of a sparkler! Not helped this year by daffodil shoots already popping up. As far as they’re concerned, time is flying by. But please watch it if you can. It was done with a lot of love and provided much joy on the day and I hope it will bring joy to all who see it. In the spirit of the times, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Easter in whatever order they come!

LITTLEHAM VILLAGE HALL

Chair: Mary ( 07881483148) Bookings: Janet ( 01237 424102 )

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING- Wednesday 4th November via ZOOM The Village Hall AGM took place via Zoom on the eve of the current month of lockdown. Sadly, Mary had little to report, due to the curtailment of many of our usual events. The Basils Blues Band gig in November was a great evening raising funds for the hall and Children in Need. The Children’s Christmas Party was another successful event, when Kim Insull from Really Wild in Torrington and a visit from Santa delighted our local children. Sadly, when Covid 19 restrictions were introduced, many other activities had to be cancelled including a Big Brunch and the legendary fete. However, the playing field has proved a great resource for the village, especially once we were able to remove 13

the restrictions on the climbing equipment from 3rd July. Despite limited income from hiring fees and fund-raising, the hall remains solvent for the foreseeable future, thanks to a government grant. Hopefully, the Spring will bring brighter news and we will be able to plan for such things as a Big Breakfast and the village fete, still scheduled for JULY 3RD 2021. PLEASE would dog owners keep their dogs on leads in the playing field. This ensures that dog fouling is not easily overlooked and that all visitors feel comfortable there. Sadly, we will have to revert to no dogs being allowed on the field if consideration for others is not shown. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR PUMPKIN TRAIL WINNERS

Ann at 1, “The Stables” and Isabel, Harry and Isla at Nethercleave

WELL DONE EVERYONE for brightening up half term week, and a big THANK YOU to our judge, Liz Shakespeare, for braving the elements on her tour around the village. LITTLEHAM LOCKDOWN LANTERN LIGHT UP!

As the pumpkin trail lifted spirits in these restrictive times, we’d love as many households as possible to create a Christmas lantern to light up the village for the last 2 weeks of Advent. Spread some joy.

A COPSE FOR THE PLAYING FIELD

The Village hall committee have agreed that the Littleham and Landcross Biodiversity Group can plant a small copse of saplings at the bottom east end of the playing field. A space will be left along the east side and lower edge to allow access for grass cuttings to be piled up after mowing.

The main planting will commence after 2 December when, hopefully, some of the lockdown restrictions are lifted. In the meantime posts will be put in around the area so that is clear where planting is to take place. For more information please phone: Mari or Rob  01237 475716

LITTLEHAM & LANDCROSS PARISH COUNCIL.

We continue to meet remotely by using Zoom video conferencing. The following issues were discussed: A member of the public expressed environmental and animal welfare concerns about the planning application at Ashridge Farm - 1/0717/2020/FUL. It was advised those who had commented to direct their comments to TDC. Cllr Pinney had concerns of dirty water run-off into the water course. We decided not to make an objection providing dirty water is controlled and managed to ensure that there isn’t increase in flow to stream.

The enforcement order for the scaffold store adjacent to Heale House is not being adhered to. Anyone can report concerns to Council and we are writing a letter to TDC to express our concerns.

Planning was approved by TDC for erection of a cabin for a bridal business at Barn View 1/0538/2020/FUL

The biodiversity group want us to do something in memory of Pat Haddrell. As the Village Hall Committee are installing a copse (25m2) in the Playing Field and we are considering planting a tree in Pat’s memory.

The new shed/road salt store has been erected (Littleham V. Hall) The old shed has been demolished. Please take any of the wood (behind the village hall) if you want it.

Between 30th Nov - 31st March roadworks are planned for repairing the pot holes and drainage issues between Littleham Cross and Crossleigh and road surface repairs between Old Moor to Old Toll House. There will be road closures and notice should be gven at least 7 days in advance. If you require any more information please contact the contractor, Cormac Ltd on:  01872 327874.

We are currently looking at areas of the village that need tidying/ enhancing. Crossways down to the bus shelter are currently being assessed. More details to follow.

There has been more vandalism at the Kenwith Archer’s site. If anyone sees anything suspicious please report it to the Police.

Finally, there are vacancies for two councillors: one each in Littleham and Landcross. If you are interested please contact the Clerk. Our next meeting is on January 7th, 2021. Members of the public can join the meeting at 7:15pm if they have any issues to raise. For details please contact our parish clerk, Debbie on  07971 159522 or email [email protected]

MONKLEIGH Happy Christmas to all in Monkleigh! Although we won't be having our usual Carol Service and Midnight Communion on Christmas Eve, there will be a range of services which can be accessed through the St Mary's Bideford website including a short service of reflection on December 27th from members of the congregation at St George's. Monkleigh School

Karen Reeves (Head Teacher) has sent me some wonderful Remembrance poems by the children. Unfortunately I have only got room for two in this issue of the Crosslet. I have written them out below to make them clearer (an actual poem is on the next page) Andrew

Lest we forget the ones we loved, Every man who dies, So many people torn by conflict, To the ones who saved their country’s side. Why forget our friends and family? Each one of us must play our part. For now we remember and look into our hearts Our loved ones, Rightful and strong, Remember, remember the 11th of November Graves old and mossy, Everyone who fought were a selfless sort. Every man who went on. May the guns go silent, no-one is longer violent To be remembered forever. Enable your voice, make the choice. Men tried. Men died. Their family cried. Be kind, joy you’ll find. in the build-up to Every soul lost, rainbow bridge crossed. Christmas, remember: Remember them all, let your poppy fall.

A time of sadness with a lot of badness. Drive carefully. It's not Nice innocent lives not able to survive. only cars that can be Call them brave sat there cold in that cave. recalled by their maker. Everyone remember the 11th of November at 11am silence was ready

A Poem by Katie from Monkleigh School 19

Update from The Bell Inn, Monkleigh

Well, I write this whilst in Lockdown Two, a scenario we hoped we wouldn’t see but obviously one that was ultimately not avoided.

Thankfully the experience of Lockdown One meant we were able to quickly reinstate our takeaway service so we could carry on trading to some extent and also offer people some light relief from cooking every evening! We’re able to offer our full menu on both Friday and Saturday nights, so our burgers, pizzas and proper sticky ribs are all there, plus a selection of pub classics such as steak and kidney pudding or slow cooked lamb shank. We are also offering Sunday roasts as takeaway if we get enough orders in by 12 noon on Saturdays. These will then be prepped for collection between 1pm and 2pm on Sundays. All the takeaways are pre-orders only, as we have to allocate you a collection slot that allows everyone to socially distance. Last orders can be taken up to 5.30pm on the Friday or Saturday. You can order online at www.thebellinnmonkleigh/food or by calling us on  01805 938285.

We have also released our Christmas menu – you can find it on our website. Of course, we are not sure if we’ll be able to honour bookings yet, but we are taking them with an optimistic smile! Give us a call if you would like to pencil something in, albeit tentatively.

We decided not to set up the grocery service this lockdown, mainly because the suppliers we used last time have now all set their businesses up to take domestic orders and deliver direct. For fruit, veg and other groceries we used Dartfresh, who accept orders online or by phone (www.dartfresh.co.uk). For meat orders we worked with our regular butchers, Wares in Torrington. They can also take orders and deliver to the area on a specific day each week (please check with them what day this is now) –  01805 622191. Whilst we feel it is easier for you to go to these suppliers direct, if you did want us to help by taking in your delivery to collect later, give us a call at the pub and we can organise this for you.

Otherwise it is onwards and upwards – no doubt we will find a list of indoor projects to do this time round. The pub and flat upstairs will be the tidiest it has ever been! Look after yourselves and each other and, most important of all, stay safe!

Regards, Sally, Roy, Patch and Max. www.thebellinnmonkleigh.co.uk

Do you write? Sketches, poems, short stories, family history? Is there a novel under your bed, which you started and never finished? Have you ever watched a play, and thought you could do better? Would you like to share your work in progress, and receive intelligent and constructive comments? A Covid Lockdown Poem

You might remember the original poems from which these snippets have been so cleverly assembled. Have fun! John & Margaret Hobbs

I won’t arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, I’ll sanitize the doorknob and make a cup of tea. I won’t go down to the sea again; I won’t go out at all, I’ll wander lonely as a cloud from the kitchen to the hall. There’s a green-eyed yellow idol to the north of Katmandu But I shan’t be seeing him just yet and nor, I think, will you. While the dawn comes up like thunder on the road to Mandalay I’ll make my bit of supper and eat it off a tray. I shall not speed my bonnie boat across the sea to Skye Or take the rolling English road from Birmingham to Rye. About the woodland, just right now, I am not free to go To see the Keep Out posters or the cherry hung with snow, And no, I won’t be travelling much, within the realms of gold, Or get me to Milford Haven. All that’s been put on hold. Give me your hands, I shan’t request, albeit we are friends Nor come within a mile of you, until this trial ends.

We’ll get through this together

Working together across Torridge, Torrington 100 has been busy offering support to communities in all our rural villages and the people of Torrington itself since the pilot programme started the ball rolling in October 2019.

While we’re still restricted and unable to do everything we’d like, the new Community Developer, Martin Rawle is keen to reach out and hear what Torrington 100 can do to help. It could be enabling an individual to get the voluntary support they need or linking people up via the social prescribing programme now in place through local GPs, or even finding the funding to help solve a local problem or create a new facility.

One community that has already benefited is Weare Giffard. As part of T100’s ‘Seed Funding Project’, which made £500 available for each village and £1,000 for , Weare Giffard asked for some support for their table tennis club. They have now set themselves up with two tables and plenty of bats and balls and host the club on Thursday evenings. if you’d like to book a session once the current restrictions lift contact Kev Richards via email [email protected]
