The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Cole will join Allman onstage at a benet concert featuring The Allman Brothers Band and other special guests in New York tomorrow, July 27, the eve of World Hepatitis Day. This cause is personal to Cole, who was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C during a routine blood test in 2008. It was then that she realized she'd been living with the virus for more than 25 years - nearly half of her life. Cole's experience is not uncommon. In fact, chronic hepatitis C is often referred to as the silent disease because – for many people – it can be in the body for decades without any symptoms. Cole is joining the campaign to encourage others with chronic hepatitis C to put aside fear and stigma and take action. "One thing is for sure – there's a stigma surrounding hepatitis C because it's associated with IV drug use.

She grew up listening to and eventually playing Merengue and Bachata. Having only Dominican inuences in her repertoire, Lakecia was unaware of the Jazz greats, but stated bluntly, “I don’t know anything about Jazz Sir; all I know is you have to let me in to this school.” Stewart could see the talent in Benjamin, and so he sent her home with a few names – Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and John Coltrane. She listened and quickly learned their style. Lakecia was nally accepted to attend LaGuardia High School. With her talent, drive, and just a saxophone as her passport, Lakecia was set on her journey from the streets of Washington Heights to the expansive world of Jazz. As she shared her music to wider audiences, Lakecia Benjamin quickly gained recognition.

Russworm My Problem(s) with Tyler Perry I have complicated feelingsabout Tyler Perry.He makes me feel some kind of way, or as my students would say, I have"feels" on the matter. In fact, for a long while, whenever I mentioned to anyone (from col­ leagues to cab drivers to my mother) that I was working on this col­ lection, I always foundsome way to distance my intellectual labor on the project froma positive endorsement of Perry's filmsand television e shows. I'd say:"Yes. Tyler Perry. Wre editing a book on him but that doesn'tmean I like his stuff. I am so not a fan. I don't drink the Kool­ Aid." In casual social spaces, I have used much stronger language to frame my resistance to Perry's oeuvre, and I'm not afraidto begin this collection of critical essays by repeating what I have so often said to others: I have hated every Tyler Perry movie I have ever seen (my per­ sonal viewing total is thirteen Perry-directed filmsand videos ...and counting). I have stressed to anyone who broached the subject with me that every moment of watching these films has been masochistic, barely endurable.I have especially hated the factthat Tyler Perry keeps making films.
