religions Article Liturgical and Pastoral Activity as a Crime in Soviet Ukraine: The Case of Greek Catholic Priest, Roman Bakhtalovskyy, CSsR (1897–1985) Andriy Oliynyk Department of Pastoral Theology, Ukrainian Catholic University, 79000 Lviv, Ukraine; [email protected] Abstract: This article examines the liturgical life of the “Underground” Greek Catholic Church through the example of the life of the prominent priest, writer and poet, Roman Bakhtalovskyy, CSsR. After 1946, the Soviet government in Ukraine prohibited the activity of this Church. Therefore, the sacramental activity of Greek Catholic priests was performed in complete secrecy until 1989. The analysis of archival criminal cases is an important source of research during this difficult period for the Church, in which pastoral activity was a pretext for arrest and imprisonment, and sacred objects were seized during searches. This article analyzes in detail the criminal case of Fr. Roman Bakhtalovskyy, which was opened by special services in 1968–1969. The confiscated objects of analysis provide valuable information about the liturgical activity, devotional practices and spirituality of that period of persecution of Catholics in Soviet Ukraine which coincided with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council and their implementation elsewhere. INSIDE:• Ukraine simplifies registration for foreigners — page 3. • Ecomony of Ukraine shows significant growth — page 3. • A special section on the papal visit — pages 8-17. Published by the Ukrainian National Association Inc., a fraternal non-profit association Vol. LXIX HE KRAINIANNo. 26 THE UKRAINIAN WEEKLY SUNDAY, JULY 1, 2001 EEKLY$1/$2 in Ukraine POPET CONCLUDESU HISTORIC VISITW TO UKRAINE by Roman Woronowycz Kyiv Press Bureau KYIV, LVIV – For five days, Pope John Paul II, the leader of nearly 1 bil- lion faithful of the Catholic Church, vis- ited his 6-million-strong flock in Ukraine in a trip that, in the end, surpassed all expectations. It left an indelible mark on the millions who came out to see him, as well as on his relations with the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church that has been in communion with the Vatican See for just over 500 years. It was the 94th visit in the 24 years of the papacy of the Polish holy father, but one that his personal secretary called “a long held dream,” one which he had talked about for “11, 12, even 14 years.” In many ways it was a trip home. Although Pope John Paul II was not born in Ukraine, his Ukrainian mother was born outside of Drohobych. And while this was his first trip to Ukraine as the head of the Catholic Church, he had spent time in the western part of the country in his youth and had been stationed there during his military serv- ice. Nearly 3 million people, the faithful and the curious, saw the aging and frail AP/Alexander Zemlianichenko holy father during a youth rally and at Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, primate of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, bless the faithful upon four divine liturgies – twice celebrated in the pontiff’s arrival at the Lviv Hippodrome on Wednesday, June 27.

During the same period, two [ordinary] processes regarding a miracle as well as a Supple- mentary one were held, the preparation of the position regarding the virtues and eventual miracles of other active causes went ahead, and, in consultation with experts of the Congre- gation for the Causes of the Saints, various cases of presumed miraculous cures attributed to our candidates were examined. Finally, after a long journey, it was possible to bring about the promulgation of the Decree on the heroic virtues, and the Cause for the beatification, of Maria Celeste Crostarosa, Foundress of the Redemptoristines. Her beatification will almost certainly be celebrated in 2016 Below is presented a chart of the Causes of Canonization currently being treated by the Of- fice of the Postulator General, outlining the developments from 2009 up to the present (May 2015). STATE OF THE VARIOUS CAUSES 1. THE “BLESSED” In each case, a miracle is required for the cause to proceed to canonization. 1. Blessed PETER DONDERS (1805-1887), professed priest [Netherlands].
