The first part consists of population educationprograms in 13 Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Viet Nam) and the second part includes those in six Pacific countries (Micronesia, Fiji, Marshall Islands, Palau, Solomon Islands, and Tonga). Entries are classified alphabetically by country. Each project is described in terms of project title, duration, implementing unit, contact person and address, funding source, executing agency, objectives, scope, and major accomplishments. For purposes of the directory, the major achievements of each organization highlight 'hat has been achieved in the following areas: institutionalization; curriculum and materials development; orientation or training; Countries which have formally established population education sub-officesor branches at the state, region, province, or district levelare also included in this directory. -

Majuro Atoll THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF MAJURO ATOLL, REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS ABSTRACT Majuro Atoll has been a center of activity for the Marshall Islands since 1944 and is now the major population center and port of entry for the country. Previous to the accompanying study, no thorough documentation has been made of the vascular plants of Majuro Atoll. There were only reports that were either part of much larger discussions on the entire Micronesian region or the Marshall Islands as a whole, and were of a very limited scope. Previous reports by Fosberg, Sachet & Oliver (1979, 1982, 1987) presented only 115 vascular plants on Majuro Atoll. In this study, 563 vascular plants have been recorded on Majuro. INTRODUCTION The accompanying report presents a complete flora of Majuro Atoll, which has never been done before. It includes a listing of all species, notation as to origin (i.e. indigenous, aboriginal introduction, recent introduction), as well as the original range of each. The major synonyms are also listed. For almost all, English common names are presented. Marshallese names are given, where these were found, and spelled according to the current spelling system, aside from limitations in diacritic markings. A brief notation of location is given for many of the species. The entire list of 563 plants is provided to give the people a means of gaining a better understanding of the nature of the plants of Majuro Atoll. -

NOAA Coral Reef Ecosystem Research Plan PACIFIC FREELY Republic of the Marshall Islands ASSOCIATED STATES The Marshall Islands encompasses approximately 1,225 individual islands and islets, with 29 atolls and 5 solitary The Pacific Freely Associated States include the Republic low coral islands (Figure FAS-1). The Marshalls have a 2 of the Marshall Islands (the Marshalls), the Federated total dry land area of only about 181.3 km . Manila American Cemetery and Memorial American Battle Monuments Commission - 1 - - 2 - - 3 - LOCATION The Manila American Cemetery is located about six miles southeast of the center of the city of Manila, Republic of the Philippines, within the limits of the former U.S. Army reservation of Fort William McKinley, now Fort Bonifacio. It can be reached most easily from the city by taxicab or other automobile via Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (Highway 54) and McKinley Road. The Nichols Field Road connects the Manila International Airport with the cemetery. HOURS The cemetery is open daily to the public from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm except December 25 and January 1. It is open on host country holidays. When the cemetery is open to the public, a staff member is on duty in the Visitors' Building to answer questions and escort relatives to grave and memorial sites. HISTORY Several months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a strategic policy was adopted with respect to the United States priority of effort, should it be forced into war against the Axis powers (Germany and Italy) and simultaneously find itself at war with Japan. The policy was that the stronger European enemy would be defeated first. - 4 - With the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 and the bombing attacks on 8 December on Wake Island, Guam, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippine Islands, the United States found itself thrust into a global war. (History records the other attacks as occurring on 8 December because of the International Date Line. -

Meinhold Radiological Sciences Division, Department of Advanced Technology, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY I1973 ABSTRACT A nuclear device, code-named Bravo, detonated at Bikini Atoll at 6:45 a.m. on 1 March 1954, unexpectedly released a large amount of radioactivity. Over 40 years after this incident, the study of its impact on the radiological health and environmental safety of the residents of Rongelap and Utirik Atolls continues. In 1987, researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory established a fission track analysis (FTA) method tbr low-level "--_gPuurinalysis. Two years later, a new shipboard protocol was developed for collecting 24-h radiologically clean urine samples. The purpose of this paper is to update information on the FTA method for measuring low-levels of plutonium, and to summarize results on the distribution of-_gPu in the populations of Rongelap and Utirik between 1981-1991. Plutonium detection levels (99% confidence level) in these samples were 2-3 _Bq, which is equ'valent to 0.2-0.3 mSv effective dose equivalent (EDE) to age 70 tbr Marshallese. The latest 1991 FTA data indicate average EDE of 0.62 mSv and 1.6 mSv fbr the people of Rongelap and Utirik, respectively, which both are the highest values since 1988. -
