  • Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)”—The Eagles (1976) Added to the Registry: 2016 Essay by Marc Eliot (Guest Post)*
“Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)”—The Eagles (1976) Added to the Registry: 2016 Essay by Marc Eliot (guest post)* The Eagles In 1971, the arrival of The Eagles signaled a major shift in popular musical tastes in America. If Woodstock was the funeral for both the music and the culture of a decade of drugged out, hippie, free love and cultish idealism, the Seventies was the decade of blatant decadence, political cynicism, sexual distrust, and rampant narcissism. No band represented both the rejection of the Sixties and the celebration of the Seventies more than its crown princes, the Eagles. Songs like “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Witchy Woman,” “One of These Nights,” and “Already Gone,” filled with spirited playing, close harmonies and an overlay of the Eagles’ war between the sexes, comprise four of the ten selections included in the initial compilation of Eagles’ hit songs from their first four albums, “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975).” Ironically, although the Eagles’ laid-back sound was bright and natural as Southern California sunshine, none of the original four members were Golden State natives (Don Henley, vocalist, lyricist, drummer, was from Texas, bred on bluegrass and country music; Glenn Frey, vocalist, lyricist, rhythm guitar, pianist, came from the streets of Detroit, influenced by the music of Motown and mentored by Bob Seger; Randy Meisner, on bass, was a veteran bar band night sider out of Nebraska; Bernie Leadon, guitar, mandolin, banjo, was a Minnesotan who loved and loved to play classic country). Each migrated separately to Los Angeles, like lemmings, to The Troubadour, the musical and cultural ground zero club on Santa Monica Boulevard, owned and operated by Doug Weston, who favored putting on his stage country-rock bands and female vocalists.

  • With a Little Help from My Friends Arctic Monkeys - When the Sun Goes Down
Q ganas dr I have categorized songs under various headings such as grammar, discussion topics and vocabulary. The grammar group has been divided according to suggested use e.g articles; present simple etc. The vocabulary group has been divided according to focus e.g. colours; weather etc. This list is by no means comprehensive. It has been compiled mostly from my own experience and from ideas from various websites including www.musicalenglishlessons.org. Sometimes it is difficult to decide if a category belongs under ‘Grammar’ or under ‘Vocabulary’ so please check both if you are looking for something specific. Any song can be used for grammar and vocabulary tasks so I have concentrated on what I thought to be the main focus. All About EVA The Artist, part III Washington, DC isn’t exactly the most musical town in America. And I’m not trying to set up a joke or make a snide comment about poly-ticians here, either. It must be a difficult job to represent the needs and opinions of so many people. I’m not about to be judgmental toward those who are no doubt trying their best amidst a not-so-perfect system. Especially since I am completely unable to place myself in their shoes. Even my George W quotes in this book are used with great respect. Heck, I can barely manage my own household and career no less an entire city or nation. However, as I wrote earlier, the farther away from the arts we get, the more frustrated our lives become. I think we need more leaders with banjos and guitars in their offices and less lobbyists. A few short years ago, traversing the political fog of this stress filled town, there was a young woman who loved to sing. And like so many hometown artists in hometowns across this nation, very few people, aside from friends and family, even knew who she was. She sang in little blues clubs and coffeehouses along the east coast, rarely travelling more than a one day drive from her home. But she loved to sing. And she loved to perform. And she loved to wrap herself up in the blanket of affection her small audiences would give her. Like so many singers, she dreamed of the big record deal.

RADIO ACTION CONTINUED WRCN, LONG ISLAND, NY M.D.-JOHN GRAPPONE: "One of America's original rock and rollers stopped by to say hello and spin some of his favorite records. Gary U.S. Bonds was a blast. Cool, laid-back and funny...Well, we are down to the final stretch before '85 rolls around which means we start listening to the 3rd, 4th and 5th track from albums released this year...To be honest, there are not many out there that are that strong... We had to go with a second Don Henley track because the album is so deep. We are also looking toward a third one already...I wish EMI released 'Restless Heart' by John Waite before 'Dark Side Of The Sun'. It sounds so much better to nie.. .As for the newer stuff at WRCN, Philip Bailey has command over the phones. Young, old, male, female, he's covered all the bases...Triumph is starting to generate interest as well...I'm sorry to say that Joan Jett's album is not happening for us...Remember, be good. 42 ............... Sunday, July 16, 2017 1SM MUSIC By ANNA GAULT INSPIRED . Nicola with gran Kathleen, right, mentor CLASSICAL singer Sandi, and on X Factor with Nicola Cassells’ latest SHY & DRS project had her dig- ging into the family’s history. The soprano drew inspira- tion from her grandmother’s experiences during WWII when she worked with Scots chart-topper Sandi Thom on song Somewhere In Time. Former X Factor hopeful Nicola, 27, admits the idea might prove strange to some audiences but she loved working with her gran Kathleen Dunsmore. She says: “A few people have thought it is a bit strange to be mixing my music with a history lesson almost but most get the idea of it. “I came up with the song first and worked on it with Sandi. “Then I looked into themes for the video and one of them was long-lost love. “I tried researching it but then it dawned on me that my own gran lived through WWII and would have an insight. “I then started bombarding her with a million and one questions and discovered all this information that’s so interesting.” Kathleen, 81, was evacuated when she was seven during the Clydebank Blitz in 1941. ‘X Factor was a great experience’ Nicola says: “Hearing things like a bomb dropping and destroying the house across the road from her while she ran into an Ander- son shelter you just realise how Gran opera lucky she was, and how lucky I am, she survived — I wouldn’t be here otherwise. “It’s not that long ago that it happened and it’s important we remember.” Nicola, from Ayr, appeared on the X Factor last year alongside Scots rap twins SHY & DRS — for soprano combining acts to form Rhapsody.

  • An Experiment in Autobiographical Fiction
An Experiment in Autobiographical Fiction A Humanities & Arts MQP by Marc Anthony Bouchard The Choice of Autobiographical Fiction When undertaking the project of composing a narrative, a writer is set against more difficulties than mere word choice, use of imagery, metaphor, flourish and correct placement of semi-colons. Writing is a process of refinement, and only one-half of the process of composing a narrative. A successful narrative requires characters, plot, subplots, drama, tension, climatic moments, resolution, conflict and dialogue, and all the best writing in the world could not save a poorly thought out and uninteresting story from disinterest or bad reviews. When I compose a story I do not simply or magically capture ideas and characters out of the air around me, but rather create and conjure them up from the immense pools and depths of my experiences and imagination. It is perhaps impossible for any writer of fiction to not incorporate some aspect of their own life or some story which they have read into their own narratives, regardless of how it manifests itself within their work. Perhaps a writer will emulate the epic structure of The Lord of the Rings to frame a series of battles they had been in while touring Korea, or perhaps they will use the structure or concept of The Catcher in the Rye to tell their own tale of dysfunction or the lasting emotional scars of loss. Perhaps I should reflect upon the similarities of The Catcher in the Rye and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, and how while both are amazingly similar, the former is a fiction, while the latter is an autobiography.
