42 ............... Sunday, July 16, 2017 1SM MUSIC By ANNA GAULT INSPIRED . Nicola with gran Kathleen, right, mentor CLASSICAL singer Sandi, and on X Factor with Nicola Cassells’ latest SHY & DRS project had her dig- ging into the family’s history. The soprano drew inspira- tion from her grandmother’s experiences during WWII when she worked with Scots chart-topper Sandi Thom on song Somewhere In Time. Former X Factor hopeful Nicola, 27, admits the idea might prove strange to some audiences but she loved working with her gran Kathleen Dunsmore. She says: “A few people have thought it is a bit strange to be mixing my music with a history lesson almost but most get the idea of it. “I came up with the song first and worked on it with Sandi. “Then I looked into themes for the video and one of them was long-lost love. “I tried researching it but then it dawned on me that my own gran lived through WWII and would have an insight. “I then started bombarding her with a million and one questions and discovered all this information that’s so interesting.” Kathleen, 81, was evacuated when she was seven during the Clydebank Blitz in 1941. ‘X Factor was a great experience’ Nicola says: “Hearing things like a bomb dropping and destroying the house across the road from her while she ran into an Ander- son shelter you just realise how Gran opera lucky she was, and how lucky I am, she survived — I wouldn’t be here otherwise. “It’s not that long ago that it happened and it’s important we remember.” Nicola, from Ayr, appeared on the X Factor last year alongside Scots rap twins SHY & DRS — for soprano combining acts to form Rhapsody.

  • Iconic Jazz-Rock Band 'Rocks the Dock'
Iconic Jazz-Rock band 'Rocks the Dock' Posted by Dick Myers On 08/01/2016 Bo Bice (c) is the new lead singer for the iconic band Blood, Sweat and Tears, who performed July 29 at Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa. Chesapeake Beach, MD -- Next year it will have been 50 years that there’s been a band called “Blood Sweat and Tears.” Through many iterations, the group has remained constant to its originating sound--an eight-piece band with lead vocalist. They, like perhaps the more famous group Chicago, made popular what is known as “Jazz Rock,” fusing influences from rock, blues, pop, horn arrangements and of course jazz improvisation. None of the original members are with the touring group today, but they are still as strong as ever as witnessed by a rousing performance Friday night, July 29 for the Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa’s Rock the Dock summer concert series. Blood, Sweat and Tears most prominent period was in the late 60’s after lead singer David Clayton Thomas replaced founding member Al Kooper. The highly-popular album “Blood, Sweat and Tears,” released in 1969, spawned three hits which all reached Number 2 on the Billboard charts: “You Made Me So Very Happy,” “Spinning Wheel,” and “And When I Die.” The only other single to crack to Top 20 was “Hi—De--Ho,” at Number 14 in 1970. That was penned by Carole King, whose grandson is now a member of the band. Blood, Sweat and Tears’ new lead singer, Bo Bice, is pushing the band back into prominence again.

Feel free to link to this archive. Send questions to [email protected] Pippin: Corner of the Sky alternate lyrics? Question: Dear Stephen, I'm a fan for over 30 years, blah blah. I have a question about Corner of the Sky. I've seen two different sets of lyrics for it; the one I'm familiar with has the lyrics "Rain comes after thunder; winter comes after fall" while the other one uses "Thunderclouds have their lightning". I learned the one I learned because that's the version my 1983 singing partner Heidi knew. Can you enlighten me about these differing versions? Also, for some strange reason my brain keeps wanting to do "Rivers will run" instead of "Rivers belong" and "Children play in" instead of "Children fit in"-- I think I was doing that back in '83 too. Why do I do that? Did such lyrics ever exist, or is it just my brain acting weird (and if so, should I correct myself?)? …Thank you for all your wonderful contributions both in the music world and on this board, archived messages of which I've been reading the past few days and from which I'm receiving much inspiration and support. -Walter Answer from Stephen Schwartz: Your guess was a good one.
