KINGSLEY PRAYER DIARY Each week of the year Christians in Kingsley pray specially for people in a different area of the village and its surroundings. During June we think of, and pray for people living in: -

W/c Jun 3rd Horseshoe Close W/c June 10th Acres Crescent W/c June 17th Beechview Road W/c June 24th Hunters Hill and Dodgsley Drive

We invite you to add your own prayers Dear Readers

We have been blessed with good weather for the last couple of weeks, hopefully it will continue and make some of this month’s events even better.

On 16th June the Village Institute is holding a summer barbeque. Entertainment is being provided by a ukelele band, see ad on next page. Why not come along and have a look at the many improvements which have been made recently, both inside and out.

On 28th June there will be an open afternoon at The Wyches, with tea being served at 2.30pm. I’ll have cake with mine please!

Looking forward to next month, on Sunday 8th July Kingsley Tennis Club will be participating in the Great British Tennis weekend with sessions to suit all abilities.

Please note that although it seems a long time off August, there is not a magazine that month, therefore if you want to advertise an event or anything taking place in August it needs to be advertised in the July edition.

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Tom Leather.

Tom lived at Meeting House Farm at Newton for nearly 50 years with his wife Pam. During his time there he ran a small market garden and at various times kept, pigs, hens, goats and sheep. He played an active role in village life, notably with Kingsley Cricket Club where he was involved with the youth team, captained the second 11 and was club chairman for many years.

After Pam died he found the large home and garden difficult to manage without her and so moved to Top Road Kingsley. He continued to live there, until failing health forced him to move nearer family in Worcestershire in June last year. Despite deteriorating health Tom tried his best to settle in, making links with neighbours and village institutions. However, his heart was always in and on 30 April it gave up the battle and he passed away peacefully in hospital.

His funeral was held at Redditch Crematorium on 18th May for family only. No flowers, but donation to MacMillan Cancer Care, who supported Pam and Tom through her illness, are welcome.

Last month we talked about “Miss Smilla’s Feeling for Snow” by Peter Hoeg. It is translated from Danish and has had excellent reviews. On balance, this book was well received by the group. Although it was quite wordy, most people found it interesting. Many of us had been unaware of the colonisation of Greenland by Denmark which is referenced throughout the book. The thriller was a good read as well. We scored the book 3.7 out of 5.

This month’s book is “The Far Cry” by Emma Smith. It is set in the 1940s and tells the story of a teenage girl’s journey to India. Emma Smith wrote The Far Cry in 1949 when she was 26. She had travelled to India in 1946 with a team of documentary film makers including Laurie Lee. The book was revived in 2002 by Susan Hill (novelist) who found a paperback edition in jumble sale.

In April we visited a number of events at Weaver Words, Frodsham’s literary festival. The programme was varied and really enjoyable. We saw Gyles Brandreth, Ian McMillan and Zia Chaudhry among other. We’re very luck to have this on our doorstep. Another literary festival, close to home, is Gladfest at the Gladstone Library in Hawarden. We’re looking forward to seeing Sarah Perry, an author whose books we have read and enjoyed. The festival runs over the weekend in early September.

We meet on the second Thursday of each month and everyone is welcome to join us at any of our meetings or events. We also have a number of friends who follow our reading list and send it comments from time to time. Meetings start at 7.30pm and are held at the Hurst Chapel. If you want more information, please contact me on [email protected] or call me on 07799 067 457. We have also got our own Facebook page called Kingsley Bookworms.

Maureen Chesmore Kingsley Walking Group

On 25 April, we enjoyed a walk from Ness village. Starting from The Wheatsheaf pub, we walked down to the Dee estuary, then through the ancient village of , with a diversion for an impromptu guided tour of the parish church, before heading back to Ness via Burton Wood. Aproximately 5.5 miles. An attractively priced lunch followed at The Wheatsheaf. Twelve of us took the walk, on a fair-weather day.

This month’s long walk was on and around Hope Mountain, starting in Caergwrle. We had glorious weather and the spring flowers were at their best. The views from the top of Hope mountain were wonderful taking in everything from Snowdonia to Hill. While we ate our lunch, we were able to watch the Airbus Beluga take off from Broughton. Kingsley Walking Group have two walks each month: on the second Tuesday there is a long walk of 7 - 8.5 miles (bring a packed lunch); on the last Wednesday a short walk of approximately 5 miles with a coffee break and pub lunch. We meet at the Community Centre at 9.30am for the short walks and for the long walks in January and February. Note however an earlier start time of 9.00am for the long walks from March to November. Information on the walks programme may be found on the Walking Club page of the Kingsley Village website. For more information call 788132 (short walks), 788068 (long walks).

Kingsley Youth Club Thursdays in term-time School Years 4 to 6 5:30 – 7:15pm School Years 7 to 11 7:30 – 9:00pm Kingsley Community Centre

A BIG THANK YOU

To Ciaran, Terry, Jane, Gill, Vic, Derek, Joan and everyone who helped to make the Red Bull's Spring Fete such a great success. The event raised £1020 for youth club!

Youth club is for young people in school years 4 to 11. We offer a variety of activities on Thursday evenings and the support of qualified youth workers. If you'd like to try it, just come along to a youth club session, complete a form and join in the fun! The Red Bull Spring Fayre

To see a horse and its rider trotting gracefully upon the by-ways of Kingsley is a fairly common occurrence. To see a rider in top hat and tails wearing a gold effigy of a bull's head on a chain around his neck, ringing a bell and sitting astride a unicorn is a different matter altogether. So it was on a beautiful spring afternoon in early May. The horseman, the new and self-appointed Mayor of The Red Bull Kingsley, was summoning the village folk to attend the Spring Fayre and crowning of the May Queen. The villagers heeded the call and were not disappointed. The weather was glorious and the scene magical as the Mayor sat upon his unicorn, addressed the multitude and invited Isabelle to sit upon her throne and be crowned May Queen for the coming year. Beside her stood Martha, last year's queen, who graciously relinquished her crown. The festivities began and the sun beamed upon them all. It was really a day for children who played games and shrieked with glee. The poor adults had to console themselves with beer, it's always tough on the parents. The afternoon wore on and the laughter never abated; on such a wonderful day everything seemed to be going to plan and then.....oh dear! We'll come to that later! No event can be staged without careful thought and the organisers, the helpers and the contributors should all give themselves a pat on the back for their efforts. The beneficiary this year is Kingsley Youth. There is one group who deserves special mention as they busy themselves behind the scenes and can sometimes be forgotten. A huge thank you then to the staff of The Red Bull; to Tim who manned the patio bar, to Emma, Mary and Imogen who tended the main bar and hurrah to the burger queen herself...Lindsey! The afternoon grew late and it was soon time for the ultimate event, the golden finale, the final conflict....the ill- disciplined, the unprincipled fiasco that is the Tug o' War. Last year there were cries of foul play and cheating; this year's event veered towards the shortcomings of a late night brawl in the bar of the House of Commons. Ciaran began by changing ends and taking the 'muscle' with him. Then someone informed the referee that Ciaran's rope was attached to a tree; could it get worse? Ciaran had more 'tuggers' than Terry and again the referee was found wanting, a pitifully inept adjudicator who later confessed he was bribed by Ciaran to the tune of three pints of lager. Terry's team didn't stand a chance, in fact they didn't stand up at all. It was all over in a flash, or a heap! Terry graciously offered his hand but Ciaran was too preoccupied with an Irish jig and taunts of "I won, I won, I won." As I intimated before, it really was a day for the children! The afternoon crept imperceptibly towards evening and the revellers sat outside or retreated to the music in the bar. A few sat out in the front and watched as the sun dropped melancholy behind the trees as it bid its last fond farewell to Kingsley's 2018 Spring Fayre.
