Sparklehorseplay Page 1 of 6 Sparklehorse Spring 1999 tour diary part 1 The South Rises Again? This tour diary is entirely the fault of one musician, and is not sanctioned by Sparklehorse Inc. You may believe that the characters are fictitious if you like.... Well, it all starts with a show in San Francisco, Victor Krummenacher and Alison Faith Levy at the Hotel Utah March 6th 1999. I played a couple songs with Alison and then the whole set with Victor, we got back to Victor's at about 3am, so I dozed in a chair 'til 5 when the shuttle came to pick me up to take me to the airport. a short layover in chicago, many people stranded by the weather there, but i got safely to Richmond, VA. where eventually i got picked up by Scott Minor and Mark Linkous in Mark's old diesel Mercedes wagon. out to the farm in Dillwyn to rehearse. on th eway we pick up a new instrument for Mark, a nylon string guitar that he is having a pickup put into. Already at the farm is David Dreiwitz, our new bass player. I met Dave originally may years ago when i was playing with Camper Van Beethoven and he was playing with Tiny Lights, but recently re - met him while doing shows in NY last fall with John Kruth. Dave also plays with Ween. So the band is Mark on guitar and singing and other weird sounds, Scott on drums and sampler, Dave on electric and acoustic bass, me (Jonathan) on guitar, violin, keyboards and glockenspiel, with both Dave and I singing background vocals.

  • Pere Ubu Stage Plot 7/4/2
What is Disastodrome? Disastodrome is a three day festival of voice and vision where the reputations of 18 avant-garage heroes will be collectively tested. These boundary-breakers, forever outside the world of music-by-numbers, are led by Pere Ubu founder, David Thomas. David Thomas is "one of America's most enigmatic and visionary talents" and a vocalist of genuine originality. His avant-rock group Pere Ubu is a byword for the uncompromising pursuit of musical vision. His improvisational trio, David Thomas and two pale boys, is the latest in a line of pop experiments intent on rewriting the rules of music production. He has collaborated with musicians of all sorts from the steppes of Siberia to the canals of Manchester, lectured at universities and art centers on "The Geography of Sound in the Magnetic Age" and, in 2002, starred in the West End production of "Shockheaded Peter." Disastodrome 2003, staged at the Freud Playhouse, UCLA, Los Angeles, February 21-23, 2003, and produced by UCLA Live, includes live performances from Pere Ubu, Frank Black, and The Kidney Brothers, as well as the first appearance in 27 years of the legendary Rocket From The Tombs and the American premiere of David Thomas' rogue opera, Mirror Man. The festival will be hosted by Johnny Dromette, creator of the original datapanik range of goods and services, and will feature a variety of lobby events, displays and motivational apparatus items called Foyerdrome, one component of which is the roving Voices From The Fringe, delivered by neo-beat poet Bob Holman. The early Disastodromes (1977-78) were staged at a radio theater in a broken part of Cleveland and featured burst steam pipes, flaming sofas and voice-of-doom winos lurking in all the dark corners.

Yes, it’s true. Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree began July 15, 2000 as one man’s desire to hear a sound he dreamt about; before most bands over the last decade, that are often compared in sound and vision to the Spree, were formed. Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree have traversed the globe several times over, much to the dismay of those that thought the band would never leave its hometown of Dallas, TX. They have appeared at every major music festival and on every late night television program. Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree has ranged in size from 13 to 27 members. It has never been about the size but about the sound. The band currently has 22 active members. Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree have released four full length studio albums up to this point: ‘The Beginning Stages of… ’ ‘Together We’re Heavy,’ ‘The Fragile Army,’ and ‘Holidaydream.’ Yes, it’s true. Tim DeLaughter has scored the motion pictures “Thumbsucker” and “Visioneers.” He also wrote and performed the Emmy nominated theme song for the Showtime series “The United States of Tara.” Yes, it’s true.
