I think it’s dangerous not to be who you are, to try to be somebody else. It doesn’t flatter me. Don van Vliet He was the architect, but he didn’t hammer that many nails in. Hmmm. Moet je luisteren dit… Howlin’ Wolf en dit … John Coltrane of… of… Ornette Coleman. Hier kijk!!! Licht op tafel aan. Daar ligt alles: vertalingen, foto’s, song… teksten… anekdotes. AH FEEL LIKE AHCID Strictly Personal, 1968 Got (a letter) up this morning how do you reckon it read? Red blue and green whoooo all through my head Licked the stamps saw a movie dropped the stamp I ain’t got no blues no more I said Put me up thinkin’ a postman’s groovy I ain’t I ain’t got the blues no more I said… Well send me with a letter lord drop me with a telegram I said My baby walked just like she did Walking on hard-boiled eggs with a… she can steal ‘em… I ain’t blue no more I said Lord one jumped up lord the other one quackin’ Yeah she got those great big drums sticking out Whoooo Big chicken legs beat when she walks flappin’ down the street where I live Well she slippin’ along easy like fried chicken Grew sort of greasy easy hmmmmm… Oh I ain’t blue no more I ain’t blue no more I said Well she walked along crazy like kinda crazy Sorta lazy sleazy cheesy you know what I mean I said… Studeeeeeeren: Beefheartology… Wervendwervelende woorden die me rechtop laten lopen. LOVE LIES Shiny Beast, 1976 Stopped by your house, saw your lamp lit Not a sign of you in it Frank komt op in rolstoel, zingt mee. Where could you go at this hour? Has all our love lost its power? I said I’d be here with a flower Streetlamps flutter like fireflies I wish I hadn’t a told you all of those love lies Streetlamps flutter like fireflies I wish I hadn’t a told you all of those love lies Where could you go at this hour? Has all our love lost its power? I miss you more hour by hour The roses seem to smell sour Streetlamps flutter like fireflies I wished I hadn’t a told you all of those love lies Stopped by your house, saw your lamp lit Not a sign of you in it Where could you go at this hour? Has all our love lost its power? I miss you more hour by hour The roses seem to smell sour Streetlamps flutter like fireflies I wish I hadn’t a told you all of those love lies All of those love lies Je kan lang wachten tot de Captain komt, maar als hij er eenmaal is, breekt de pleuris uit. Jij hebt twee levens. Of nee!… Je hebt me toch opgeslokt? Ergens. Door de Captain. ‘The only thing that stops a composer from thinking about music is rigor mortis. I’ve been writing some pretty wild stuff…’ Intuïtief zoekt hij verder. Zigzagwanderer.

Sparklehorseplay Page 1 of 6 Sparklehorse Spring 1999 tour diary part 1 The South Rises Again? This tour diary is entirely the fault of one musician, and is not sanctioned by Sparklehorse Inc. You may believe that the characters are fictitious if you like.... Well, it all starts with a show in San Francisco, Victor Krummenacher and Alison Faith Levy at the Hotel Utah March 6th 1999. I played a couple songs with Alison and then the whole set with Victor, we got back to Victor's at about 3am, so I dozed in a chair 'til 5 when the shuttle came to pick me up to take me to the airport. a short layover in chicago, many people stranded by the weather there, but i got safely to Richmond, VA. where eventually i got picked up by Scott Minor and Mark Linkous in Mark's old diesel Mercedes wagon. out to the farm in Dillwyn to rehearse. on th eway we pick up a new instrument for Mark, a nylon string guitar that he is having a pickup put into. Already at the farm is David Dreiwitz, our new bass player. I met Dave originally may years ago when i was playing with Camper Van Beethoven and he was playing with Tiny Lights, but recently re - met him while doing shows in NY last fall with John Kruth. Dave also plays with Ween. So the band is Mark on guitar and singing and other weird sounds, Scott on drums and sampler, Dave on electric and acoustic bass, me (Jonathan) on guitar, violin, keyboards and glockenspiel, with both Dave and I singing background vocals.

The British bands changed the way rock'n'roll was played. At the same time, USA folk-singers were changing the way rock'n'roll was "consumed". The fusion of music and politics that occurred in the early 1960s had lasting effects on the very nature and purpose of rock music. Rock music became a primary vehicle for expressing dissent within the Establishment, and therefore one of the most relevant aspects of the "counterculture". Even when the political element was not predominant, rock music came to adopt a stance that was "countercultural" in nature. Rock'n'roll had been discriminated against. Protest folk-singers had been discriminated against. There was a tradition that made rock music an "underground" phenomenon by nature. The youth of the USA was still searching for an identity, the process that had begun with rock'n'roll. Underground music provided several ways to achieve that goal. Fans of underground music repudiated the passive kind of listening that was typical of pop music (humming the melodies that are played often on the radio, hailing the star that is publicized by the media) and adopted a more independent and critical judgment of music.

  • Tom's Wild Year: the Story of Swordfishtrombones
Tom's Wild Year: The Story of Swordfishtrombones Classic Rock, June 2013 HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU it was not. Tom Waits did, however, have news for fellow guest Ian Hislop, rounding on the latter after he suggested that Waits promote his new album more audibly, and snarling that he would "promote it in my own damn way". The year was 1983, the album Swordfishtrombones, and the programme was the October 18th edition of Channel 4's dismal yoof-oriented chatshow Loose Talk. Waits had already sidestepped the trap set when host Steve Taylor asked whether the singer was familiar with "the seedier parts" of his native Los Angeles, replying, "You mean like a farming community?" The squirm-inducing interrogation staggered on until Waits lost it with Hislop. In those pre-reality-TV days it was almost shocking. For any Waits fan who'd made the transition to Swordfishtrombones from, say, Small Change, the subtext of the Loose Talk conversation was all too clearly the 33-year-old singer's annoyance at being typecast as a beatnik bum who'd lived in LA's Tropicana Motel and made boozy faux-jazz albums about… well, living in LA's Tropicana Motor Hotel. For Swordfishtrombones was nothing if not a radical rewrite of Waits' nighthawk persona, dispensing not only with the Tropicana but with the many crutches he'd used since making his first album for David Geffen's Asylum label a decade earlier: manager Herb Cohen, producer "Bones" Howe, and (Elektra- )Asylum Records itself. To this day I can recall the mild shock we felt on the NME staff when Swordfishtrombones followed abruptly on the heels of Waits' lush, Howe-helmed soundtrack for Francis Ford Coppola's big-budget film One from the Heart.

Dies gilt leider auch für die drei herausragenden Nachfolge-Alben Lick My Decals, Baby (1970), The Spotlight Kid (1972) und Clear Spot (1972), die dem monumentalen Trout Mask Replica musikalisch und kreativ in Nichts nachstehen. Mit Sun Zoom Spark: 1970 To 1972 schaffen Rhino Rec. diesem ungerechtfertigten Zustand nun Abhilfe.
