Of 52 C TED/1 the Administrative Records of 1864-1983 the Hull City Hull History Centre: The Administrative Records of the Hull City Council Education Department C TED/1 The Administrative Records of 1864-1983 The Hull City Council Education Department Extent: 38 boxes, 3 volumes Description: The Hull Education Department administrative records consisting of financial, correspondence, personnel, publications, papers relating to the Formation of the Education Development Plan, records relating to Individual Schools and a small number of items relating to the Hull United Small Clubs Boxing Association Administration History: Following the directive of Forster's Education Act in 1870, England was divided into districts and elementary schools provided in areas where provision was insufficient. Elected by rate payers, School Boards managed districts and built new schools or absorbed the existing schools. Local Authorities administered these schools which were supplementary to the voluntary schools, run by the National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor and the British and Foreign School Society. The elementary schools were undenominational and became Council Schools under Balfour’s Education Act of 1902 which saw the City and County of Hull become a local education authority to provide elementary and higher education in consultation with the new Board of Education. The following year the Education Committee of the city council took over all of the schools under the control of the now defunct School Board. A full history of education provision in Hull up to the 1960s can be found in The Victoria History of the County of York, East Riding, Volume 1 Custodial History: These records were transferred to the Archives by the Hull City Council Education Department during the normal course of its business.
