  • Sasha Mäkilä Conducting Madetoja Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting
Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Sasha Mäkilä Conducting Madetoja Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Music) Supervisor: Prof. Mart Humal Tallinn 2018 ABSTRACT Conducting Madetoja. Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting For the material of my doctoral project, I have chosen the three symphonies of the Finnish composer Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947), all of which I have performed in my doctoral concerts during years 2012–2017. In my doctoral thesis, I concentrate on his first symphony, Op. 29, but to fully understand the context it would be beneficial to familiarize oneself with my doctoral concerts on the accompanying DVDs, as well as with the available commercial and archival recordings of Madetoja’s three symphonies. The aim of this thesis is to understand the effect of scholarly activity (in this case working with manuscripts and recordings) on the artistic and practical aspects of a conductor’s work; this is not a study on the music of Madetoja per se, but I am using these hitherto unknown symphonies as a case study for my research inquiries. My main research inquiry could be formulated as: What kind of added value the study of composer’s manuscripts and other contemporary sources, the analysis of the existing recordings of the work by other performers, and the experience gained during repeated performances of the work, bring to performing (conducting) the work, as opposed to working straightforwardly using only the readily available published edition(s)? My methods are the analysis of musical scores, manuscripts and recordings, critical reflection on my own artistic practices, and two semi-structured interviews with conductor colleagues.

It would be difficult to overestimate the impact of this remark able work on Finnish culture at all levels, especially during the years when Finland, a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire, found its autonomy under increasing threat – a period that broadly coincided with the early part of Sibelius’s active career as a composer.

What does it take to lead an orchestra and who’s got what it takes? SYNOPSIS Conductivity is a film about creative leadership and growing to become a leader. The three main characters are I-Han Fu from Taiwan, Emilia Hoving from Finland and James Kahane from France. They study orchestral conduction in the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. We follow their journey from being a student to world class artist during three years. It’s a rocky road, where tension, social fears and elements out of their control can create insurmountable obstacles. Our French student James is focused on networking and getting to know people in the industry. During his studies at the Academy he becomes more and more confident, to the point that he gets in trouble for his arrogant style. However, most of the time this feature works in his favour. He is a bit of an opportunist and knows it himself. Our Finnish student Emilia decided to study conducting because she wanted to work with people. But now she has understood, that the work of a conductor is in many ways very lonely.

P THE GLORIOUS, TRAGIC CAREER OF ERNST MIELCK by Kimmo Korhonen In late spring 1899 the composer Ernst Mielck was struck with a serious bout of tuberculosis of the jugular gland. He underwent an operation, but the doctors did not give him much hope of recovery. By July of that year Mielck’s condition showed signs of improvement, and in the middle of August he moved to the shores of Lago di Maggiore in Locarno, Switzerland, where he was to spend the following winter. Yet in spite of the encouraging prognosis, his condition took a turn for the worse: the illness spread to his lungs and Mielck died on 22 October. He was buried in Locarno two days later – on what would have been his 22nd birthday. Mielck’s sudden death marked the premature end of a career that promised great things. He had come to prominence only a few years earlier, first as a pianist, then as a composer. In his few years of creativity he composed a body of works that, though small, nonetheless demonstrated his extraordinary talent. His output includes the first fully fledged Finnish symphony (1897), composed two years before the First Symphony of Jean Sibelius. Contemporary musical circles even viewed him as a significant challenger to Sibelius. Mielck’s career reached its zenith in December 1898, when he became the first Finnish composer to hold a concert of his own works with the Berlin Philharmonic. In spite of this success, Mielck has remained something of an outsider in the history of Finnish music. At a time when young Finnish composers were increasingly turning their attentions to national themes and a post-Wagnerian musical language, Mielck took inspiration from central-European Romanticism and the traditional compositional forms of Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms.
