1. General information

Jorma Panula is one of the most recognized and admired teaching conductors today. Known as “maestro of maestros”, he trained several famous conductors, such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Osmo Vänska, Petri Sakari, , Atso Almila, among others. Maestro Panula has been a professor of and the Copenhagen Royal Academy. Today Jorma Panula is a guest conductor and a professor of courses all over the world, in places such as Tanglewood, Aspen, Vaasa (), Moscow, Paris, Australia, Holland and Spain.

Atso Almila is , conductor, professor of Conducting and Schooling. Jorma Panula's student at the Sibelius-Academy 1974-77. Almila has been worked as Music Chief of the , Conductor of Tampere Philharmonic, of Joensuu Orchestra, of Kuopio Orchestra and principal guest of Seinäjoki Orchestra. Teacher of conducting at the Sibelius-Academy 1991-2010 and Professor of Conducting and Orchestral Education from August 2013. Furthermore, he usually teaches Master Classes in China, Finland, Ireland and Switzerland.

The masterclass will take place in the Hotel Miranda & Suizo, located in the historic center of San Lorenzo del Escorial (Madrid – Spain), in front of the emblematic Monastery built by Philip the Second at the end of the XVIth century (see http://www.mirandasuizo.com/portada).

There will be two sessions with two different groups of participants, in each of which will be worked with one of the teachers:

Group A) July 3rd-9th, with Atso Almila

Group B) July 10th-16th, with Jorma Panula

Conditions and schedule for each session will be developed in the same terms (please see schedule below), while the requirement level will be higher in the Group B. Also the orchestral ensemble for Group B will be bigger. Every student may choose between the two groups, while the selection for Group B will be done by Prof. Panula, attending to the level of the student.

The masterclass will be open for a maximum of 12 active participants in each Group. Those selected will conduct the Camerata Antonio Soler for ca. 20 minutes every day. During the final concert everyone will have the opportunity to conduct. This concert will be held at the Casa de Cultura of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (see http://www.aytosanlorenzo.es/CasaCultura).

(*) The score of this piece will be provided by the Masterclass organization.

Every student must indicate which pieces he would like to conduct in the rehearsals and in the concert (see Inscription Sheet). It is recommend to prepare and conduct every piece in the rehearsals.

4. Fees

Admission fee per student is 1.600 € for Group A and 1.800€ for Group B, including accomodation and full board (from dinner and night of monday 3rd/10th to breakfast of monday 10th/17th) in Hotel Miranda & Suizo. We offer the possibility to attend both sessions with a special price of 3.000€. For those who do not need hotel accomodation, the fee will be 1.100€, 1.300€ and 2.000€, respectively.
