Our mission is to make Singapore a great city to live, work and play. We strive to create a vibrant and sustainable city of URA distinction by planning and facilitating Singapore’s physical development in partnership with the community. INNOVATION The URA has successfully transformed Singapore into one of the most liveable cities in Asia through judicious land use planning and good urban design. We adopt a long-term and comprehensive planning approach in formulating strategic plans such as the Concept Plan and the Master Plan, to guide the physical development of Singapore in a sustainable manner. SSERVICE PPASSION INTEGRITYI Our plans and policies focus on sustainable economic growth and ensuring a quality living environment. As the conservation authority, URA also ensures that we protect our built heritage. Through working with communities and building owners, we have conserved close to 7,200 structures and buildings, as well as entire districts. To turn plans and visions into reality, URA takes on a multi-faceted role. In addition to our planning function, URA is the main government land sales agent. Through the sale of State land, we attract and channel private capital investment to develop sites to support economic and social development. Far-sighted, holistic and integrated planning has played a crucial role in shaping Singapore’s distinctive skyline and beautiful landscapes that we all enjoy today. The first Concept Plan 1971, a long-range plan, laid the foundation for many key infrastructure and urban networks, and established fundamental planning principles that have guided us up till this day. Over 40 years, we have stayed focused on providing a good quality of life for all, supporting economic growth, maintaining a clean and green environment and making the best use of our limited resources. In FY2014, we saw good progress in the development of major precincts like the Jurong Lake District. We ramped up our research capabilities and deepened community partnerships, for sustainability and resiliency. Plans taking off In June 2014, we gazetted the Master Plan, one of the most important land use plans that are used to guide the development of Singapore’s physical landscape in the next 10 to 15 years. The bicentennial is an opportunity to reflect on 200 years of history from 1819, one of the key turning points that changed our trajectory. It will also examine the 500 years prior to 1819, as these formative years lend context to our evolution. Singaporeans can look forward to the Singapore Bicentennial’s anchor event: an experiential showcase held at the Fort Canning Centre from June to September 2019, which will bring Singaporeans on a reflective journey of key milestones in 700 years of Singapore’s history, and the significant contributions of Singapore’s early settlers and communities. Another anchor event in 2019 is the Find Your Place in History trails, which will feature projection installations at various historical spots, some lesser-known than others. The trails will allow Singaporeans to experience Singapore through the years, and learn of the less prominent points in our history, in-situ. Both will bring history alive in an engaging and interactive way for all Singaporeans, young and old, from all walks of life.     Greater Community Participation at i Light Marina Bay 2018 i Light Marina Bay has returned since 9 March 2018, with 22 enthralling light art installations and a myriad of activities to light up Marina Bay. This year’s edition of the festival also involves greater participation from the community in the creation of sustainable artworks. Organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) as part of place-making efforts in Marina Bay, the sixth edition of the sustainable light art festival features installations created by artists from Singapore and around the world. Designed with energy-saving lighting and recycled or environmentally-friendly materials, the light art installations reinforce Marina Bay’s position as a sustainable precinct and encourages festival goers and the public to adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives. “Dancing Grass” by Yuree Hong and Siyoung Kim (South Korea) Three of the installations were created using used bottles and containers contributed by the community and corporate partners. One of the artworks, Transistable Plastic by Luzinterruptus from Spain, is a large-scale installation created using multiple panels encased with plastic waste. The artwork aims to raise awareness about the amount of waste we generate in our lives. About 20,000 PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles contributed by the public and corporate organisations, including those taken from a plastic bottle collection drive held at The URA Centre in February 2018 were used. The artists of two other installations have also sourced used bottles from local companies and cafes to be repurposed in their artworks. Milk Bottle Cows, by Singapore-based artist BP Loh, aims to encourage recycling and upcycling through a showcase of life-sized ’cows’ created from some 2,000 plastic milk bottles.

    Annex 2 i Light Marina Bay Artists & Installations Artist : Angela Chong (Singapore) Installation : ⊂/⊃ About the Installation The installation is a functional sculpture that illuminates at night while allowing the public to use it as a sitting area. Constructed out of acrylic sheets, the installation features coloured LED lights that are reflected onto the sheets. As a sculpture, it will also serve to give a futuristic edge to the environment. What’s Smart ? The artist uses LED lights to light up the edges of the acrylic sheets. The lights are programmed to change rhythmically to form a dynamic light display. About the Artist A graduate from RMIT Bachelor of Arts, Fine Arts (Honours), specializing in sculpture, Angela Chong has a keen interest in creating a narrative in her installation works. A recipient of the NAC Local Bursary and Georgette Chen Scholarship awards, her works deal with light and darkness, constantly blurring the line between fiction and ‘reality’. Her influences vary from literature to poetry, music to films. Her installations depict memories and an attachment between the object and a character using light projections. She is currently interested in creating interactive works. This is her first outdoor work dealing with light. She has been to several art residencies such as the Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland in 2010, Youkobo Art Space in Tokyo, Japan in 2008 and for Sense of Fear Festival 2006, Tabor, Czech Republic and participated in 100 Points of Lights by Next Wave 2006 in Melbourne, Australia. She has been actively exhibiting locally in major exhibitions such as the Singapore Art Show 2005 and Visions and Illusions 2004.
