The Valentines disco was a wonderful way to finish of a very busy and productive term. Pupils showing love and respect to each other is common place, but non-more so than this week as we celebrated acts of kindness to one another under the guise of Love. Thank you for your support of the discos this, amongst the many ventures that the PTA plan, continue to help provide all of our pupils with further opportunities of enrichment throughout the school year. At the start of January pupils joined in and had fun with our second annual Numeracy day, throughout which pupils had fun tackling Problem Solving workshops or looked at ways of getting value for money in conjunction with NatWest Bank. An important day that brought real life numeracy to the forefront of our pupils’ minds and help bridge the understanding of why we deliver what we do inside the classroom. Alongside this, The Talk for Writing workshop that we provided this week was well attended and hopefully gave you an insight in to why and how we follow that programme to support Literacy within the curriculum. With that in mind it has been an absolute pleasure to see these ideas, techniques and strategies coming to life in exciting and stimulating lessons across all phases. We have also welcomed visitors from Woodard Academies Trust, the Academy Council and other schools. On every occasion the pupils and staff have done us proud in welcoming and celebrating their achievements with these visitors. Well done everyone! Class assemblies continue to be a success, another opportunity for our wonderful pupils in Year 1 to share what they have been doing with friends and families and have some fun whilst doing it. Visits continue to go ahead and I know this term the ventures to Pizza Express and the local library have been well received, thank you once more if you have volunteered for this which enables these events to happen. Excitingly meetings have been held around the forest school area, as we look to develop this area more over the next coming months. Mrs Hall is very grateful, as are we, for any donations that have come in to support us on this journey, more news will follow. Lots coming up including, Chapter mornings for parents of our Reception pupils, visits from the Queen of Hearts and the White Rabbit for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party as part of World Book Day, Reading Workshops for parents to help support your child’s reading to name but a few. As a result of all of these things, this part of the Spring Term seems to have flown by. It doesn’t seem like a moment ago I was speaking to the pupils about seizing the New Year and putting our best foot forward. I reminded pupils this week of the importance of rest over this coming break but also in getting prepared in the quick turnaround for all that we have ahead of us. It is with this in mind that I would like to ask that you read the letter sent out with regards to reminders to make sure we have the smoothest possible return to school for all of our pupils. I would also like to wish you and your family a very restful and blessed break. Mr Paul Robertson.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Barfleur for winning the Chapter Token Competition this half-term. Chapter tokens have been awarded to pupils for ‘Keeping the Spirit of Christmas Alive’ and ‘Being Committed to Learning by Working Hard and Joining in at Every Chance You Get.’ Barfleur won with a total of 350 tokens! They have enjoyed a non-uniform day today. Our next behaviour focus is, ‘Treating Others with Kindness and Respect.’ I am sure Hotspur, Provost and Dunelm will try really hard to earn lots of tokens for their Chapter so they can enjoy a non-uniform day too! First School have been taking part in a whole school Chapter Moring today. Pupils from Reception to Year 4 have been working in Chapter Groups to promote ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ with each child making a ‘pledge’ to make our school, home or community a better place. We have also been learning more about the local charity CHUFF, (Children’s Heart Unit Fund) who’s mission is to make life better for children and young people who are born with or who develop heart conditions by providing lifelong support to them and their families. CHUF was one of our runner-up charities this year. Pupils have been raising money for the charity purchasing branded items such as wrist bands and pens. Thank you to everyone who purchased items to raise funds for this worthy cause. The total amount raised will be shared via Parent Mail. Thank you so much for your continued support Mrs Collier

First School Eco Warriors

Mrs Spencer and her eco group met on 3 February with Mrs Jessup (Head of Catering) to discuss ideas towards making an action plan to make our school more eco -friendly.

In school we are fortunate to have so many resources! We can make these resources last longer and need to be replaced less by looking after them.

With this idea in mind we shared ideas around ‘REDUCE’ theme.

The eco-warriors were brilliant at contributing their ideas and we came up with the idea for every class to have an ‘eco kit’ containing: • Bowl for spare lids from glues etc.

• Fruit and veg recycling tub.

• Set of classroom rules for how to reduce waste.

• Eco warriors discussed what rubbish we have and the need to promote fresh fruit and veg posters using our eco avatars. Classes could be given points for picking up lids, pencils etc and lights being switched off. We will meet again next term to decide how to action these ideas in the First School. Thank you eco warriors for your valuable contributions. FIRST SCHOOL | PAGE 4 Year 1 Class Assemblies Year 1 proudly performed their special Class Assemblies this half-term to their families. The assembly was all about The Seasons as this is a whole year Science topic in Year 1. All of the children participated in sharing facts about the different times of the year and the features of each season. They recited poems, sang songs, shared work they have already done and spoke of their enthusiasm about was to come. The children really enjoyed themselves and judging by the applause they received so did their audiences! Well done to all of Year 1 pupils.

Reception afternoon in the Arctic The pupils enjoyed a freezing cold afternoon in the Arctic this half term, observing animals that live in that environment and recording their research back at base camp or in shelters dotted around the landscape. They had to wrap up warm to keep out the harsh Polar winds but were lucky enough to stumble across an Inuit village café serving lovely warming hot chocolate!

In amongst all the research, they also went for a sledge ride pulled by a team of huskies, and even found time for a snowball fight. Lots of children told us it was the best afternoon ever!

Happy Lunar New Year— Guò nián hǎo"(过年好) The catering team very kindly provided the pupils in Reception with the chance to sample some Chinese cuisine to celebrate the New Year. With the (optional!) use of chopsticks, the children tucked into spring rolls and noodles with chicken and vegetables. The braver ones tried the sweet chilli sauce too! ¡Qué rico! – Y9 Spanish food tasting

As part of their GCSE studies, Year 9 pupils have been learning about Spanish food and have had the opportunity to sample some traditional dishes. This provided a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with the catering team who prepared a range of dishes such as paella, patatas bravas, tortilla, calamares and arroz con leche. This year paella and calamares were definitely the most popular amongst pupils.

Numeracy and Careers Since September, Year 10 have been completing a ‘Build My Skills’ course which has involved listening to guest speakers discussing certain careers paths and completing tasks during their registration and Chapter Time. These tasks have involved researching their chosen career path and the average starting wage. With this information, they have been applying their numeracy skills, exploring living expenses and working through budgeting their theoretical future life. Many pupils have found this very useful, building their awareness of how their numeracy skills in particular, will help them to set their own financial goals and budget effectively in future.

Theatre Royal Drama Workshop This half-term, Year 10 Drama pupils took part in a devising workshop lead by Phil Hoffman (Artistic Director at Theatre Royal. Newcastle). It was a fast-paced day that took pupils through a variety of activities from creating a waterfall as a team to writing scripts under pressure. Pupils developed their approaches to stimulus, character and story arc - there was a great buzz of inspiration in the drama classroom the following day. Pupils were keen to develop their exam scripts and add to their 20-page portfolio!

Politics and Economics

We were honoured to welcome Eric Wild to Kings Priory on 12 February to speak to our A-Level Politics and Economics students. Mr Wild is Vice Consul at the U.S. Embassy in London and originates from Washington DC. The talk included an overview of what an Embassy does, his career pathway into the diplomatic service and the U.S./UK relationship. This linked really well with a number of topic areas the students have been studying this year. The economics students were given the opportunity to question Mr Wild on the future trading relationship, post-Brexit between the UK and USA, as well as exploring the current economic tensions between the USA, NAFTA and China. The politics students asked some brilliant questions about the US election campaign and the tragic case of Harry Dunn where the wife of a US diplomat has received diplomatic immunity from prosecution. Many thanks to Mr Wild and the US embassy for this fantastic learning experience. CAREERS SENIOR SCHOOL | PAGE 9 UPDATE MR HAND

What’s been happening? It’s been a busy time for careers at Kings Priory School over the last half-term with a number of events happening. Below is just a snapshot of some of the things the students and pupils have been up to.

Senior School pupils engaged with a variety of activities during tutor time – dispelling some of the myths around apprenticeships and the Sixth Form have had sessions on apprenticeships in support and guidance over the last few weeks, run by Miriam Jamieson and her team from Newcastle UXL – ensuring that they are well-informed about the range of post-18 options available to them. The majority of Year 11 have now received their careers guidance interviews to help support them make well-informed decisions as they prepare to embark on the next steps on their educational pathways As part of their continuing engagement with the Building My Skills programme, Year 10 attended a thought provoking session last month from Marc Millar, from St James’s Place Wealth Management who spoke to them about the importance of online appearance from an employer perspective. They are now working in Chapter Time to evaluate a series of social media profiles on the back of Marc’s advice and guidance and preparing to embark on work experience after their mock exams in March. Coming up… National Careers Week will be upon us from 2 – 6 March. There will be activities and events running across the week – so please keep an eye out on Parent Mail for more details. Parents are more than welcome to attend with pupils so please come along if you can. Year 10 will be embarking on work experience between 5 -13 March. Further to earlier correspondence, if parents are able to support us in offering work experience places please get in touch with the school. We’d love to hear from you. Follow us on Twitter ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR @KPS_Catering SCHOOL It is really important that we continue to register pupils who are eligible for free school meals (FSM) even though your child may not wish to take up the option of a free meal. This is because it also attracts Pupil Premium funding for up to six years after eligibility. Pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a school lunch each day through the Universal Infant Free School Meal initiative. However, you should still register for Free School Meals, if entitled, as it will provide funding for school for a further three years after the end of the above eligibility. Forms are available from either of the school’s main reception areas or you can also register on the North Tyneside Website: my.northtyneside.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals.

The PTA aims to bring together parents, teachers and the wider community to raise funds and to have fun doing it. The funds enrich your children’s education by providing valuable equipment, materials and experiences.

In 2018/2019 we organised children's discos, fairs and movie nights which raised over £9,000. This academic year we are aiming to raise £15,000! We want to make sure that we provide events that are popular, enjoyable and lucrative. In order to maximise our voluntary time and effort we need your honest feedback!
