Twelve very enthusiastic children were picked (1 from each class) to be the First School’s ‘eco warriors’ and we held our inaugural committee meeting earlier this term. It is so rewarding to see that each member wears their badge with pride and takes their job very seriously. They have done a fantastic job of establishing the recycling of fruit into the compost bin and also noticing when lights have been left on. I look forward to working with them again in Autumn, before we pick new committee members. Mrs Spencer

Well Done to Rosa

We ran our competition to design our Eco Warriors and Rosa (Year 3) was the winning entrant. Rosa received her prize which was kindly donated from Tribe .

Look out for the Eco Warriors around school from September!

First School have enjoyed raising funds for their chosen charity, The North of England Children’s Cancer Research (NECCR). The children voted for the charity during Chapter Time and suggested various fund-raising activities. We held a Christmas Movie Night, Christmas Accessory Day, participated in the Children’s Cancer Run and some children took part in the first ever Children’s Cancer Bike Ride!

I am so very proud to announce that our wonderful pupils, their families and staff have raised a staggering £3,282.30! This money will help fund invaluable research into the treatment and prevention of this awful disease.

Thank you so much to everyone for supporting this worthwhile cause. Whilst we will be electing a new charity next year, we will be encouraging pupils to represent Kings Priory School every year at their events.

Year 12 Geography at Alnham Fieldhouse

Last week Year 12 geography students completed their A level fieldwork exercise in Northumberland. During a two day stay at our house in Alnham students completed a range of fieldwork tasks related to their studies of the carbon and water cycles in a range of challenging weather conditions, where we nearly lost Mr Hand in a thunderstorm on a hillside. After what was a very busy two days students should be commended on their diligence and efforts and are now well set to complete their NEAs next year.

For more information on hiring Alnham Fieldhouse please email [email protected]

The Fieldhouse is ideal for groups of Brownies, Scouts, Walking Groups or a family get together.

On 19 June Mrs Rowell, Mr Smith and 15 language Durham University visit students from year 10, took a minibus to the language department at Durham University to have a taster lecture on taking languages into higher education. Throughout the afternoon we took part in activities including tasks about the derivatives of European languages, a lecture in medieval French literature and a taster session in learning Russian! Everyone enjoyed the afternoon and left feeling inspired which was a delight for the teachers; however, the cacophony of badly pronounced Russian conversation on the minibus back was less delightful. Overall, it was a very productive and inspiring afternoon that helped develop our general language skills and taught us about the many career opportunities involving language, leaving everyone excited for the future. We thank Durham University for inviting us and hope to be involved in more activities in the future.

For the second year running, Kings Priory Y3-6 attended the County Quadkids athletics finals and came back triumphant in both age categories. The event took place at the games at Silksworth Fitness and Wellbeing Centre. The athletes endured challenging conditions as the temperature rose to 23 degrees but outperformed their competitors, particularly in the middle distance running. For the second year running, the Year 5 and 6 team were crowned champions with Aimee and George both finishing 2nd as individuals with Emily and Luke taking the top sport for their genders. The school took over 45 competitors to the competition with participants in the Year1/2, 3/4 and 5/6 teams alongside individual open gymnasts. The children really enjoyed the competition, in particular using some of the facilities’ state of the art equipment. The Key step 1 team (Year 1 and 2) narrowly came 2nd to a very strong Appletree Gardens squad. The Key step 2 team however went one better, winning the competition and qualifying for the county school games. The six open gymnasts also had amazing success taking the top five individual places in the open category with Eliana coming first, and top spot in the sensory open category via Mabel. These six gymnasts alongside the Key Step 2 team returned to Benfield for the county finals last Thursday. The key step 2 team managed to secure the bronze medal as did Libby in the open category. The moment however belonged to Mabel in Year 1 and Eliana in Year 3 who both gained gold medals in the sensory open category and open category respectively. Last week, the First School enjoyed their Health and Wellbeing Week. Each year group had a sports day, KS1 had a ‘Do something different day’ and KS2 took part in a chapter cricket competition. The week also ended with a whole school chapter sports morning. The behaviour of the children was absolutely fantastic and we must say special thanks to the very supportive parents who came to watch and also, the sports leaders from Huntingdon place site for their fantastic assistance at the events. The winners of the KS2 sports day this year was Hotspur and the chapter cricket competition winners were Dunelm. Well done to all of those who were involved in what was a wonderful way to end this sporting year which Mr Youldon has described as the First school’s most successful to date.

If your child is currently a Middle School pupil or will become a Middle School pupil from September this year we will be changing the afternoon routine for them. We will continue to collect your child from Café K at 3.45pm at the end of the school day; however, from September we will serve your child their snack in Café K rather than in OOSC. Once they have finished their snack they will then be escorted to OOSC. The children will therefore arrive at OOSC later than usual and cannot be collected before 4.30pm.
