What attracted me particularly about the History World timeline is that each event, which might be earth shattering in itself with a wealth of detail sufficient to write volumes on, and indeed many such events have had volumes written on them, is presented as a sort of pared down news head-line. Basic unadorned fact. Also, the History World timeline is multi-faceted. Most historic works focus on their own area of interest and ignore seemingly unrelated events, but this timeline offers glimpses of cross-sections of history for any given time, embracing art, politics, war, nations, religions, cultures and science, just to mention a few elements covered. The view is fascinating. Then there is always the question of what should be included and what excluded. -

Hornblower's Ships
Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. He first flew his own flag on the Nonsuch and sailed to the Baltic on her. In later years his ships were smaller as befitted the nature of the tasks that fell to him. -

Victorian Heritage Database place details - 28/9/2021 POLLY WOODSIDE Location: 1-23 SOUTH WHARF PROMENADE SOUTH WHARF, MELBOURNE CITY Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) Number: H2116 Listing Authority: VHR Extent of Registration: All of the iron hulled barque known as the Polly Woodside. 1 Statement of Significance: The Polly Woodside was built in Belfast in 1885 by Workman Clark & Co Ltd for William J Woodside, and operated as a cargo vessel, initially carrying coal, nitrate and wheat between England and South America, and also visiting North America, Africa and Australia (Newcastle, N S W). In 1904 the ship was sold to a New Zealand company and renamed Rona (a Maori name) and until 1921 sailed mainly between various ports in Australia and New Zealand. In 1923 it was dismantled to become a coal hulk, and towed to Melbourne. The ship was temporarily requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy during the Second World War, and used in New Guinea as a refuelling barge for navy ships, then returned to being a coal hulk in Melbourne. In 1968 the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) purchased the ship for one cent. It underwent extensive restoration, most of which was done by volunteers, and in 1978 was opened to the public, moored permanently at the 1875 Duke's & Orr's Dry Dock at Southbank. In 1988 the Polly Woodside was awarded the World Ship Trust Medal for supreme achievement in the preservation of maritime heritage. The Polly Woodside is a three-masted iron barque with a clipper bow and rounded counter-stern. The hull is of riveted wrought iron, with clinker built (raised and sunken) plates. -

Four-masted barque PEKING - shifting Wewelfsfleth to Hamburg - September 2020 After 88 Years - Four-masted Barque PEKING Back In Her Homeport Hamburg Four-masted barque PEKING - shifting Wewelfsfleth to Hamburg - September 2020 On February 25, 1911 - 109 years ago - the four-masted barque PEKING was launched for the Hamburg ship- ping company F. Laeisz at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. The 115-metres long, and 14.40 metres wide cargo sailing ship had no engine, and was robustly constructed for transporting saltpetre from the Chilean coast to European ports. The ship owner’s tradition of naming their ships with words beginning with the letter “P”, as well as these ships’ regular fast voyages, had sailors all over the world call the Laeisz sailing ships “Flying P-Liners”. The PEKING is part of this legendary sailing ship fleet, together with a few other survivors, such as her sister ship PASSAT, the POMMERN and PADUA, the last of the once huge fleet which still is in active service as the sail training ship KRUZENSHTERN. Before she was sold to England in 1932 as stationary training ship and renamed ARETHUSA, the PEKING passed Cape Horn 34 times, which is respected among seafarers because of its often stormy weather. In 1975 the four-master, renamed PEKING, was sold to the USA to become a museum ship near the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. There the old ship quietly rusted away until 2016 due to the lack of maintenance. -Af ter returning to Germany in very poor condition in 2017 with the dock ship COMBI DOCK III, the PEKING was meticulously restored in the Peters Shipyard in Wewelsfleth to the condition she was in as a cargo sailing ship at the end of the 1920s. -
