The popularity of our annual Highland Archaeology Festival goes on from strength to strength. We aim to celebrate our shared history, heritage and archaeology and showcase the incredible heritage on our doorsteps as well as the importance of protecting this for future generations. The educational and economic benefits that this can bring to communities cannot be overstated. New research is being carried out daily by both local groups and universities as well as in advance of construction. Highland Council is committed to letting everyone have access to the results of this work, either through our Historic Environment Record (HER) website or through our programme of events for the festival. Our keynote talks this year provide a great illustration of the significance of Highland research to the wider, national picture. These lectures, held at the council chamber in Inverness, will cover the prehistoric period, the early medieval and the industrial archaeology of more recent times. -

The Fund can help with acquisitions in most collecting areas including objects relating to the arts, literature, history, natural sciences, technology, industry and medicine. Decisions on grant applications are made following consultation with curatorial staff at National Museums Scotland, the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland who provide expert advice to the Fund. Funding The annual grant from the Scottish Government for 2016/17 was £150,000. The NFA made 64 payments totalling £131,525 which enabled acquisitions with a total value of nearly £373,000. This included payment of grants which had been offered but not yet claimed at the end of the previous financial year. At 31 March 2017, a further 11 grants with a total value of £33,418 had been committed but not yet paid. -

Ancestral tourism fits the former perspective and centers on tourists travelling to sites which they perceive to be a ‘homeland’ where, during the visit, they attempt to discover more about their own heritage. This study explores ancestral tourism from a provider perspective focusing on the delivery of tourist experiences and relationships between tourists and the place visited. The research is based on a qualitative study of tourist and non-tourist specific providers across Scotland with data collected using in-depth interviews. This study reveals a phenomenon which delivers deeply personal experiences to visitors and where encounters involve intense, often lengthy, interactions between visitors and providers. Ancestral tourism experiences are also often centered on tourism provision within local communities which can present challenges to both provider and tourist alike. ‘Our Land, our People, our Story’ ‘Ar Dùthaich, ar Daoine, ar n-Eachdraidh’ A Proposed Strategy for Gaelic in the new Gairloch Heritage Museum Roddy Maclean The Project Gairloch Heritage Museum (GHM), which has been in existence and on the same site in Achtercairn since 1977, is planning to move to the former Anti Aircraft Operations Room (AAOR) in Spring 2019. This will provide a major opportunity to expand and develop the museum’s exhibition and activities. In the light of these changes, GHM appointed a consultant to develop a strategy for Gaelic. The museum exists within a locality that boasts a strong Gaelic heritage and it already has a significant archive of Gaelic resources, much of it collected by a former curator, the late Dr Roy Wentworth, who was an expert on the local dialect and heritage. The Articles of Association of the Gairloch and District Heritage Society, which runs the museum, include the aim ‘to promote understanding in and knowledge of the Gaelic language and literature’. The Curator, Dr Karen Thompson, is currently learning Gaelic. This report was submitted to the Gairloch Heritage Museum on Monday 21 December 2015. Explanations for this dichotomy are inevitably complex and varied, but variations in organisational performance have been explained by the Resource-Based View, which argues an organisation’s competitive advantage stems from its ability to access and use resources. This perspective is examined through the concept of stakeholder theory. This thesis investigates the influence stakeholders have on independent, rural Scottish museums during the organisational life cycle, and whether this is a source of competitive advantage.
