Highland Archaeology Festival Fèis Arc-eòlais na Gàidhealtachd

29th Sept -19th Oct2018 Celebrating Archaeology,Historyand Heritage A’ Comharrachadh Arc-eòlas,Eachdraidh is Dualchas Archaeology Courses The University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute

Access, degree, masters and postgraduate research available at the University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute. www.uhi.ac.uk/en/archaeology-institute/ Tel: 01856 569225 Welcome to Archaeology Festival 2018 Fàilte gu Fèis Arc-eòlais na Gàidhealtachd 2018 I am pleased to introduce the programme for this year’s Highland Archaeology Festival which showcases all of Highland’s historic environment from buried archaeological remains to canals, cathedrals and more. The popularity of our annual Highland Archaeology Festival goes on from strength to strength. We aim to celebrate our shared history, heritage and archaeology and showcase the incredible heritage on our doorsteps as well as the importance of protecting this for future generations. The educational and economic benefits that this can bring to communities cannot be overstated. New research is being carried out daily by both local groups and universities as well as in advance of construction. Highland Council is committed to letting everyone have access to the results of this work, either through our Historic Environment Record (HER) website or through our programme of events for the festival. Our keynote talks this year provide a great illustration of the significance of Highland research to the wider, national picture. These lectures, held at the council chamber in Inverness, will cover the prehistoric period, the early medieval and the industrial archaeology of more recent times. Our conference continues this theme with a look at how far we have come over the past 25 years since the festival began. For those who like a challenge we have an extended geocache trail and a photographic competition and for those who want to get stuck in further, there is a whole afternoon of fascinating workshops. I would like to thank all our event organisers for their time, imagination and effort as the festival would not be possible without them. I wish you all a very successful and enjoyable festival. Public archaeology should balance the twin aims of free and open participation for all, and sound research questions.

We work with communities and groups to help them discover our shared heritage through the development and delivery of innovative, ethical and exciting heritage projectsthat have public engagement at their very core.

We offer support and mentoring in the areas of project development and project management and can advise on often complex funding processes. We have delivered community archaeology projects across the UK, from Sutherland to Sussex, investigating everything from prehistoric burial monuments to post-medieval cornmills. Our participants have included toddlers andoctogenarians, and everyone in between!

Drawing on our extensive range of in-house skills, your public archaeology project could include: excavation; survey; geophysics; schools involvement; post-excavation and specialist training workshops; talks; laser scanning and LiDAR; museum displays and interpretation; web design; and printed media.

Whether you want to initiate a new community archaeology excavation, run an education initiative, design a new community museum display or create an ambitious heritage landscape study, we can support you by providing innovative, ethical, sustainable and practical solutions to heritage development.
