    Architecture and Naturing Affairs 264 Reincarnation of Norman I About Life in Repeated Embodiments Living new lives, in a cycle: whereas Orlando in Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel wakes up as a different gender regularly, effortlessly, and seamlessly, in Matthew Barney’s film-opera, River of Fundament (2014) the protag- onist Norman is transmogrified through much more ritual-intensive and sculptural transformations. Inspired by Norman Mailer’s novel Ancient Evenings (1983), then replacing the protagonist (an ancient Egyptian noble- man Menenhetet I) with the author of the novel himself, Barney’s film begins with the ka spirit of Norman ascending from the underworld. Norman is reincarnated as Norman I and Norman II over five hours. Sleek automo- tive corpses embody them: a 1967 Chrysler Crown Imperial, a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Along- side those, primitive materials such as lead and zinc turn into iron and copper, bronze and brass, then toward silver and gold.     THE UNBEARABLE UNLIKELIHOOD OF BARNEY FINAL EDIT 14/2/14 David Walsh We see the sinking of the Titanic as an unmitigated disaster. We also marvel at the irony of an unsinkable ship at the bottom of the ocean. This is the stuff of legend. There are other perspectives, of course. Perhaps the failure of one ocean liner engenders an analysis of process. Maybe we do better now, maybe the things we launch stay afloat. But those very legends—movies, books, songs, stories—perhaps they enrich us. When liQuids freeze, the resulting solids typically occupy less volume. Water is a significant exception. If it wasn’t, icebergs wouldn’t float, and the Titanic wouldn’t have sunk. In fact, it wouldn’t have sunk for a much more fundamental reason—it would never have been built. Deep oceans, cold and dark, would freeze from the bottom up. There wouldn’t be any liquid water; there wouldn’t be any life on earth. A critic’s role is to ponder the sunken ship, and wonder if it sank the right way, a good way. A eulogist has a much more honorable role. A eulogist sees the ship resting there on the bottom, and sees past that to celebrate the unfrozen ocean. I choose to eulogize Matthew Barney for those reasons, and this: Barney’s work is an iceberg, massing below the surface, waiting to cut me open, waiting to show me the sea of opportunity. While I was considering how to contribute to this book, I learned that Lou Reed had died and I spontaneously wrote an obituary for our museum blog, MONA Blog.

Loosely based on Norman Mailer’s 1983 novel Ancient Evenings, the film follows the death and reincarnation of two principal characters who take the form of Norman Mailer and an anthropomorphic automobile. A collaboration between visual artist Matthew Barney and Berlin-based American composer Jonathan Bepler, the film was conceived of as a contemporary opera that combines documentary footage of three live acts performed in outdoor environments in Los Angeles, Detroit, and New York, with live-action cinema, largely set in a careful re-creation of Mailer’s Brooklyn brownstone apartment, where the late author’s wake is underway. In Ancient Evenings, Mailer’s protagonist, the nobleman Menenhetet I, uses magic and trickery in order to become reincarnated three times in the womb of his wife, who then becomes his mother. In each attempt at reincarnation, the undead must cross the river of feces to attain new life, with the goal of changing his corporeal status from that of nobleman to pharaoh. In his third and final attempt to transform, Menenhetet III becomes stuck in the womb, failing to reincarnate. In RIVER OF FUNDAMENT, Barney recasts “Norman” in the role of the protagonist, as he endures two rebirths, failing in the third, in hopes of attaining a higher status among the ancestry of Great American Letters.

    Literature and Ancient Egypt Laurie Molina Grade Level: Secondary Level Objectives: 1. Introduce students to the details literature can share with the historian or geographer. 2. Give students the opportunity to analyze literature for historic, cultural, and geographic information. Materials: Reading from Ancient Evenings by Norman Mailer Procedures: 1. Review basic beliefs and cultural traits for the ancient Egyptians. (You can use the typical text material if a better resource book is not available.) 2. Introduce the use of literature to explore behaviors of other civilizations, especially ancient ones. 3. Give students the Ancient Evenings reading and read it aloud with them in class. Put the following question on an overhead transparency or the board and discuss with the class before asking them to explore these issues in cooperative groups: What does the reading tell us about Ancient Egypt’s: Economy? Technology? Ideas? Customs? Objects? Political Beliefs? Arts? Sciences? Leisure Activities? Belief Systems? Do the rules for embalmment favor or penalize any particular group of people? Which ones, if any? Was there a class system in Ancient Egypt? What evidence can you cite for your answer from the story? 4. In groups, have students explore the reading and its clues to other aspects of Ancient Egyp- tians. When groups have completed the assignment, have them discuss their findings and the evidence for their analysis. 21 Evaluation: Completion of the analysis assignment and participation in the group discussion.
