Louise Brodie talking to Martin Gordon.] Could you tell me where and when you were born please? I was born on the 19th of July 1938, the year of the Tiger. I was born in Kensington, in St. Mary Abbot's Terrace. My father was an economist. And, my father had been born in Italy at the beginning of the century; my mother had been born in China in 1913, where her father had been practising as a doctor in Manchuria. Therefore I came from a very international background, albeit my family was a Scottish-English family and I was born in London, but I always had a very strong international inclination from my parents and from other members of my family around the world.

(Jyväskylä Studies in Humanities ISSN ISBN Diss In the past, exploration of music has focused on analysis by formalists, refferentialists and through social, semiotic and anthropological viewpoints including Schenkerian-Yeston (1977), Semiotic-Eco (1977), and Motivic-Ruwet (1987). Although each has its merits in the formal analysis of music, few explore genre identification. In musical genre studies the exploration of musical, paramusical (extramusical) and perceptual elements are essential to facilitate a full understanding of the subject area. Johnson in Zorn supports such a perspective in his argument for a holistic approach to musical analysis (Zorn 2000:29). The multidisciplinary nature of music and the discourses embodied in its creation, development and dissemination utilise a range of signifiers for identification advocating the utilisation of a “hybrid” (Wickens 1999) methodology combining quantitative and qualitative analysis.

  • Sparks - This Town Ain’T Big Enough for Both of Us Episode 211
Song Exploder Sparks - This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us Episode 211 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. (“This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us” by SPARKS) Russell: We're big, uh, cinema buffs, so I think we've always had this kind of rationale that in making pop songs, you're able to make the most elaborate movie in your own mind in a three-minute song. Hrishikesh: That’s Russell Mael. He and his brother Ron Mael are the legendary duo, Sparks, from Los Angeles. Over the last 50 years, they’ve released 25 albums. They’ve collaborated with Giorgio Moroder and Franz Ferdinand, and influenced bands like Joy Division, Faith No More, Björk, and countless others. There’s a new documentary about them called The Sparks Brothers made by one of my favorite directors, Edgar Wright. His films include Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Baby Driver, and Scott Pilgrim vs the World. The new documentary premiered at Sundance this year, and comes out in theaters this Friday, June 18th. Here’s what Edgar Wright says in the intro of the film. Edgar: Sparks. How did this glam rock anomaly become a band with a career spanning 5 decades? How can Ron and Russell Mael be successful, underrated, hugely influential and overlooked all at the same time? And where does one even start with 25 studio albums and nearly 500 songs? Hrishikesh: We’re gonna start with just one song.

  • Flutists' Family Tree : in Search of the American Flute School / by Demetra
FLUTISTS’ FAMILY TREE: IN SEARCH OF THE AMERICAN FLUTE SCHOOL DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Demetra Baferos Fair, M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Professor Katherine Borst Jones, Adviser Approved by Professor Lois Rosow Professor Christopher Weait Adviser School of Music Copyright by Demetra Baferos Fair 2003 ABSTRACT For decades, American flutists have sought to identify specific traits that define their playing as a whole. While the “French School” has been characterized by a preoccupation with tone, a standard repertoire, and set of teaching materials written by Paris Conservatoire professors, no such definition can yet be set forth for the “American School.” This document provides a clear starting point for research into the what, where, why, and how of the “American Flute School” by first identifying who is associated with that school. By tracing the lineage of transverse flute playing from teacher to student through the past 300 years, we may identify orchestral flutist, soloist, and teacher, Georges Barrère, as a primary influence upon American flute playing. Barrère and his students – and his students’ students – have taught approximately 91% of all living flutists in the United States today. Of that vast number, approximately 87% can trace their heritage (through one or more of their teachers) to Barrère student William Kincaid, renowned flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra and pedagogue at the Curtis Institute of Music. It is important to note that most modern musicians study with more than one teacher over the course of their career (usually between three and eight).
