Known internationally, he has won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film four times - Ghatashraddha (1977), Tabarana Kathe (1986), Thaayi Saheba (1997) and Dweepa (2002). In 2011, he was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award by Government of . A gold medalist from the Film and Television Institute of India, , Kasaravalli started his career in ilms with Ghatashraddha (1977). Over the next 30 years he directed 11 ilms and a tele serial. The ilm he made to fulill his diploma, Avashesh, was awarded the Best Student Film and the National Film Award for Best Short Fiction Film for that year. He has received thirteen . It is based on a short story by the same name by Kannada writer . The ilm premiered at the Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema in New Delhi on 14 July 2008, where it won the Best Film and Best Actress awards in the Indian Competition section. won the National Award for Best Actress for her performance in the ilm. The ilm is set in the late 1990s among the ishing communities around Kundapura, in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka. Naayi Neralu July 25, 2.30pm Naayi Neralu is a 2006 Indian Kannada language ilm directed by Girish Kasaravalli, based on a novel of the same name by Kannada writer S. L. Bhyrappa, and starring Pavitra Lokesh in the lead role. The ilm won three Karnataka State Film Awards. The ilm is mostly shot in coastal Karnataka near , Kallianpur and Kundapura. The ilm deals with three members of a family dealing with a very bizarre situation. But the inner theme is much more complex and can be analyzed in many dimensions. It is a culmination of many aspects of life: human relationships, man and society, multiple perspectives on a situation, and so on. Each of the protagonists look at the situation the way they want to. Kraurya July 25, 6.00pm Kraurya is a 1996 Indian Kannada language drama ilm directed by Girish Kasaravalli, based on a story written by T. N. Seetharam about an old woman who has to deal with complex relationships with people of different generations she is put up with. The title in Kannada literally means "cruelty". The cast includes Renukamma Murgod in the lead role as Rangajji, with supporting roles portrayed by Vishwas, H. G. Dattatreya and T. V. Gurumurthy. The ilm won two awards at the 43rd National Film Awards — Best Feature Film in Kannada and Best Child Artiste.

Thayi Saheba July 26, 1.30pm Thayi Saheba, released in 1997 is directed by Girish Kasaravalli. The ilm is based on the story of a Brahmin family during the pre independence and post independence periods of India. The plot subject was highly complex and handling such an intricate theme and adapting it to celluloid was a dificult task. 's performance as Thaayi Saheba was widely appreciated. The climax was yet another feature of the ilm that left a lasting impression on the viewer. The picture of Narmada Thayi sitting on the porch of her house prepared to face the police is unforgettable. The ilm won National Film Awards in 1998, Filmfare Awards, V Shantaram awards & Mysore Sandal Gold Awards.

- 3 - Ghatashraddha July 26, 6.00pm It is Girish Kasaravalli's irst feature ilm in 1977, starring Kuttappa, Naraya Bhat and Ajith Kumar in lead roles. It is based on a novella by eminent Kannada writer U. R. Ananthamurthy. The ilm won three awards at the 25th National Film Awards. It won the award for Best Feature Film, Best Music Direction and Best Child Artist. A young Brahmin Vedic school student, who is from an aristocratic family, befriends his school master's daughter who is a pregnant widow. The boy tries but fails in concealing his friend's pregnancy. The widow has an abortion forced on her, has the eponymous ritual performed on her and is excommunicated.

- 4 - Tabarana Kathe July 27, 3.30pm Tabarana Kathe (1987) was based on a short story of the same name by Poornachandra Tejaswi. It won Karnataka State Film Awards 1986-87 & 34th National Film Awards for Best Feature Film & Best Actor - Charuhasan. Tabarana Kathe is the story of Tabara Shetty, a government servant in the rank of a watchman. Tabara Shetty serves the government till his retirement. But problems emerge after his retirement. Tabara never gets his pension money. Matters worsen when his wife and only companion falls sick with diabetes. Tabara tries all means to get his pension to treat his wife. After a few months, his wife dies. The pension money arrives after that. Tabara curses his higher oficials and the system which ruined his life.

Dweepa July 27, 6.00pm Dweepa (2002) is based on a novel of the same name by Na D'Souza, and starring and Avinash in lead roles. Dweepa deals with the raging issue of building dams and the displacement of natives. Located in the backwaters of a dam, Sita Parvata is an island slowly submerging due to the rains. The government succeeds in evacuating the residents by giving them compensation for the properties they own. The village temple priest Duggajja, his son Ganapa, and his daughter-in-law Nagi ind it impossible to leave their homeland and make a living with the meagre compensation given by the government. They have but a small hut, which earns them a compensation of ₹25,000. In Ganapa's own words, the compensation can give them food and shelter, but cannot compensate for the love and respect of their people. On the island, they are important people, but outside, they would be one among hundreds of families struggling to make a living. Centered around this complex theme, the ilm narrates the struggles of the family and how ultimately in the end they manage to continue life on the island. The ilm won National Film Awards, Karnataka State Film Awards & Filmfare Awards.

Kanasembo Kudureyaneri July 28, 3.30pm

Kanasembo Kudureyaneri is a 2010 ilm; based on an anthology of short stories written by Amaresh Nudgoni titled Savari, starring Vaijanath Biradar, Umashree and Sadashiv Brahmavar in lead roles. The ilm received positive reviews from ilm critics. It won several national and international awards. It won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay and the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Kannada of 2010. The irst half of the ilm may have you raise your brows at Irya's and Rudri's dreams and faith, the second half sets out to suggest that what may look superstitious to one may be a way of life to the other. It also shows how sometimes what looks real may be unreal and vice versa, and that with faith in our beliefs, we can achieve anything.

Haseena (2004), based on the story Kari Nagaragalu by Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq, looks at Hasina (Taara) who marries auto driver Yakub (Chandrahas Ullal) against his mother's wishes. The couple have three daughters the visually impaired Munni, Shubby and Habeeb. Pregnant with their fourth child, the couple break social codes and do a pregnancy scan to ascertain the baby's gender. When Yakub realises it is yet another girl, he becomes at turns abusive and neglectful, eventually leaving Hasina to fend for herself. Taara, won the distinguished National Film Award for Best Actress for her role. The ilm has won National Film Awards for Best Actress, Best Costume Design and Best Film on Family Welfare

Koormavatara (2011) is a ilm, based on a Kannada novel written by Kum Veerabhadrappa with the same name. The cast includes Dr. Shikaripura Krishnamurthy, , HG Somasekhara Rao and Datthu and received positive reviews from the ilm critics. It won several national and international awards. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Kannada for the year 2012. Rao, who is at the edge of retirement from government service, happens to play the role of Mahatma Gandhi in a television serial. Unknowingly the qualities of Gandhiji gets internalized in him. Adoor Gopalakrishnan “Images and Relections: A Journey into Adoor’s Imagery”. July 29, 6.00pm Kasaravalli’s 90-minute documentary on Gopalakrishnan is titled “Images and Relections: A Journey into Adoor’s Imagery”. Adoor Gopalakrishnan is an Indian ilm director, scriptwriter, and producer. Adoor Gopalakrishnan had a major role in revolutionizing cinema and is regarded as one of the inest ilmmakers of India. Adoor's irst ilm Swayamvaram (1972) pioneered the new wave cinema movement in Kerala. Most of his ilms go to festivals around the world, and are released in Kerala. All the eleven ilms he directed, from Swayamvaram to Oru Pennum Randaanum (2008), were screened at several international ilm festivals and won him several national and international awards. He won National Film Awards sixteen times, seventeen times and has won several international awards. He won the prestigious British Film Institute award for Elippathayam (1981). Adoor received the Padma Shri in 1984 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2006. The nation honoured Adoor for his valuable contributions to Indian cinema by awarding him the highest cinema award of the country, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2004.
