Front and Back Cover Artwork by students of Spastics Society of Karnataka, and Sketches by Pranav Varma Message from the President The moment I am approached to pen a message for the Annual Report of the Spastics Society of Karnataka reminds me that another year has gone by. Boy! Time is really flying, it appears. It has been a very fruitful year with the Spastics Society of Karnataka making its presence felt among the club of NGOs. The society wouldn’t have achieved laurels galore without its students and teachers. We have no words to adequately praise them. If the students and the staff flourish it will reflect positively on the whole society (SSK). Over the years we have traversed a long distance and yet we have still miles to go. This is one area where we cannot, for a movement, sit back and relax. One has to be ever vigilant to keep it moving. My warm greetings to every member of the SSK family.

Adhip Chaudhuri, I.A.S. (Retd.,) President, Spastics Society Karnataka

1 Message from the Director

Our Growth as Teachers and Care-givers at S.S.K. A good number of us are engaged as teachers, ‘Special teachers’ and other types of caregivers to our children and some are staff members from decades.

Can we pause for a moment and introspect deeper into ourselves and ask, “do we know” these beautiful children, in their absolute state of combination of deeper feelings, purity, frustration, abilities, potential, communicative dimensions of language, etc.

The need, thus, it appears, is our own development, in day-after-day, month-after-month, year- after-year and how this helps in developing our insights and awareness about the angelic children who are with us.

The moment we accept we do not know enough of these children our internal growth begins and results in unconditional acceptance of these children whom we serve.

Mrs. Rukmini Krishnaswamy Director M.S. (Child Development and Early Child Education), Harvard University, U.S.A. M.Ed. Sp. Ed. – Boston University Diploma in Child Psycho-Therapy, Harvard University, U.S.A.

Pranav Varma - Student artist featured in the Annual Report 16 year old Pranav Varma’s sketches and drawings celebrate experiences and emotions animated in black and white. Diagnosed with Intellectual impairment with PDD, Pranav is a simple young boy who is passionate about sketching and singing. As a child, he started with making simple sceneries. Being in a mainstream school till grade 8th, he joined Spastics Society of Karnataka’sI nclusive Vocational Training Centre after he was referred out from the school. Pranav draws his inspiration and visual imagery from his experiences which include visiting temples, watching TV and observing his environment. He has had no formal training in art. His characters, especially from the Ramayana and temples of Kerala, come to life with the simplicity and purity of his thoughts of good versus evil, his favourite being Hanuman and Shiva. His drawings mainly in black and white and occasional use of colour, exhibit devotion and a high sense of motion. At first glance, Pranav’s lines seem clear and steady, but on closer inspection they guide us into a strange depth. It’s amazing to watch how he can sketch without lifting his pen with a free and determined form for his expression. Pranav is not aware of his artistic potentials and at the moment simply expects a ‘very good’ from his art teachers.

14 A heart-warming story from Kalyanasundaram – a volunteer who has been teaching at The Spastics Society of Karnataka since July 1995

The Spastics Society caters to ordinary children from poor backgrounds, who cannot cope with regular school syllabi or timings. Many of the children work part-time to earn a living, and the N.I.O.S syllabus gives them the option of choosing their subjects and finishing the course at their own pace. Few years ago, Mrs. Kairali Nair, our Principal, introduced me to a boy, Joy Mondal – a senior secondary grade student of NIOS at SSK, whose mother was a house maid. Joy stayed in a hostel and worked at a restaurant at Indiranagar. Mr. Srinivas Rao, in whose house Joy’s mother worked sponsored his senior secondary education after bringing him to Bangalore from Calcutta.

Joy would attend school in the morning, and go to work after. A diligent student, he scored 70% in English in the 10th final exam. That year, his working hours were changed to the morning, leaving him with the option of studying on his own to attempt the exam. Since I lived near his hostel, he wanted me to teach him during his break times – 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Having seen his thirst for knowledge, I agreed, and taught him 3 out of his 5 subjects. My colleague Malini Lahiri taught him statistics, and he joined an institute nearby for accountancy. He would finish his classes, go back to the hotel, and often work until midnight. Despite all that he was doing, he would always submit his assignments on time - even if it meant regularly working till two A.M. and being up by six the next morning. Though he offered to pay us for the classes, we told him that a good score in his exams would be our best reward.

Joy did quite well in the 12th exams, and wanted to do a course in hotel management. He cleared an interview at the Oberoi and was due for selection, when his benefactor Mr. Srinivasa Rao stepped in, and agreed to finance a regular 4 year course for him at Christ college. It was extremely heartening to see the manner in which help magically materialized for those who truly deserved it. Needless to say, he did very well, and was placed with many 5-star hotels. Joy undertook training for 2 years with Taj Vivanta at Hyderabad, and works as junior sous-chef there today.

He never fails to visit me whenever I’m at Hyderabad every year. Having learnt the value of education, he took up the cause of his sister’s kids at Calcutta, ensuring they went to good schools. Joy is a rare gem who spared no effort to achieve his dreams. He has immense gratitude for his benefactors and SSK, and will always be wished the very best in life by us. KP Pranav Varma 15 VOCATIONAL SERVICES

“I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.” Helen Keller

The goal of vocational training at the Inclusive Vocational Training Centre, Centre for Creative Growth and the Rural Vocational Programmes (Ramanagaram, Mysore, Mulbagal) is to lead young adults to the threshold of dignified living by earning a livelihood. The programmes include a variety of activities which are aimed to help improve gross and fine motor abilities, functional learning and life skills, follow a process from concept to completion, develop individual creative expression, balanced thinking and caring for materials. The students are then steered towards specific training in two areas based on their aptitude and abilities. Skills training presently include baking, catering, pre- retail skills, computers & secretarial practice, front office training, back office skills (DTP, Xerox,L amination, and Spiral Binding), paper plate making, paper products, carpentry, tailoring & needle work, vermicomposting, silk cocoon flowers, clay work and art. Our outlet “We Tree”, exhibits products from the training programme which are available for sale. Students practically learn skills in sales and money-handling. At the Inclusive Vocational Training Centre Parents enthusiastically participated in Individual Vocational Plan meetings and contributed to their child’s progress along with the staff. ÂÂ Our esteemed volunteers have helped our students complete their NIOS Exam in Bakery. The year 4 students are being trained to complete their NIOS Bakery & Catering Exams. ÂÂ As a part of Transitional Care activities, group activity sessions were conducted by occupational therapist Anita Suresh, along with the team of teachers to facilitate and develop independent living skills in the students. ÂÂ The year gone by saw students excel in sports, music and dance and win many awards. Significant amongst these are student Amal who qualified for International Special Olympics and secured 7th place in athletics and the overall trophy at Kalangana by the students of SSK. ÂÂ 5 students have been chosen for Special Olympics training in athletics for which they have been attending training at Cubbon Park on Sundays.

16 ÂÂ Students performed at the ATS Meet in front of an audience of 250 members from all over the world. The performance, which included songs, dance and art was much appreciated by the audience. ÂÂ Excursion to Lumbini Gardens which included boating, rides, games and lunch was a welcome change for students and staff. ÂÂ Sales Kiosks set up at the Diagnostic and Research Centre and at two locations of State Bank ofI ndia branches, enabled students to interact with customers and receive hands-on training in communication, money skills, and sales. ÂÂ Special orders were executed for the India Inclusion Summit organized by SAP; for Titan Pvt. Ltd, MindTree Pvt. Ltd, Columbia Asia Hospital, Joy Alukkas, and Wipro Ltd. At the Centre for Creative Growth 15 students of the Creative Art Unit have been receiving training in making paper products, where everyone’s skills are reflected in the end-product of all items, and all feel that their input is quantified in the sale money. Trainees have also been exposed to weaving and tailoring. Synonymous to the name given to the unit a new product, WOODEN TRAYS was introduced to the paper and carpentry training students. This product has been appreciated by many, and being handy and useful, the demand is on the increase.
