Preface

Today's Taiwan enjoys peace and prosperity. Thanks to the tireless effort of the government, the concept of cultural tourism has become popular in recent years and has gradually insinuated itself into the consciousness of the public. By providing us with interesting places with their diverse exhibition themes, museums have become important transmitters of culture where people may spend their leisure time amidst an atmosphere of culture. According to a 2009 survey of the nation’s museums, a total of 646 organizations qualify as museums. Of these, 221 organizations met the strict criteria demanded of museums. These museums are spread across the island of Taiwan and nearby islands, forming cultural communities of various sizes. The 2010 publication of this pamphlet, Enjoying Taiwan Museums, by the Chinese Association of Museums was made possible by the kindness of the Tourism Bureau, an affiliate of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, and Yingge Ceramics Museum. It is hoped that by reading this small booklet, people will be inspired to personally visit the great variety of museums to be found on Taiwan.

The Chinese Association of Museums (CAM) was founded in 1990 and is the most important professional society of museum specialists in Taiwan. At present, there are 96 member institutions, which include all the representative public and private museums and organizations. In addition there are another 242 individual members who are museum specialists. The goal of CAM is to become a communication platform for domestic museums, and continually improve the professional aspect of domestic museums through the efforts of board members, secretariat, and the Committee of Professionals. Moreover, CAM publishes Museum Newsletters and Journal of Museum and Culture (the first issue of which will be published in April 2011), conducts research related to museum issues commissioned by the government or academic

6 organizations, provides training programs, professional services and consultation, as well as promotes exchange programs with other museums throughout the world.

Since the establishment of CAM, government support has enabled this organization to attend many international meetings where ideas have been exchanged with other museum organizations, specialists, and scholars from all over the world. For example, CAM participated in the 2004 ICOM (International Council of Museums) General Assembly in Seoul, and the 2007 Assembly in Vienna. We hosted the 2006 INTERCOM (International Committee on Management) conference and meeting in Taipei, and attended the annual meeting held in 2007 and 2009 by AAM (American Association of Museums) in the . When attending these assemblies, we had the strong impression that our international friends were very curious about the development of Taiwan's museums and desired to know more. We hope the publication of this pamphlet will provide interested individuals around the world with a better understanding of Taiwan's museums and important informations concerning cultural tours. 57 museums located in various areas of Taiwan and outside islands have been specially selected and introduced with nearby tourist attractions for this very purpose. It is our belief that this pamphlet will be a helpful guide for exploring Taiwan's museums.

Although the size of Taiwan is limited, it contains rich natural resources and a varied cultural landscape. Since Taiwan's museums represent the essence of this richness, they are definitely worth an in-depth visit. We welcome you with all our hearts.

New Life New Value: The Brand New National Palace Museum 01 National Palace Museum The National Palace Museum was officially inaugurated on the 10th of October in 1925, following the departure of the last Qing emperor, Aisin-Gioro Puyi, from the premises of the in Beijing. While the imperial collections that had been locked away from the common souls for centuries were now open for public viewing, a significant number of the Museum’s objets d’art were shipped between 1933 and 1945 from Beijing to , , and provinces in the hinterland of China to avoid the flames of the Sino-Japanese War, an odyssey that no other museum in the world had ever embarked upon. In the aftermath of the nation’s domestic unrest in 1949, the cream of the collections was brought to Taiwan, and in 1965 the National Palace Museum was restored in the city of Taipei.

Acclaimed as one of the world’s most prestigious museums, the National Palace Museum is home to approximately 700,000 pieces of artifacts of cultural and historical significance. That it is internationally acknowledged as illustrative of China’s cultural legacy may undoubtedly be attributed to its rich collections covering all genres of aesthetic representation in the history of Chinese art. The Museum keeps an active acquisitions policy, and has over the years substantially enlarged the scope of its holdings to encompass representative works from each and every stage in the development of Chinese civilization from the Neolithic Age to the modern times and down to the contemporary era.

Ilha Formosa Due to its small size, Taiwan is not easy to locate on the world map. However, for those who have discovered it, a closer acquaintance will reveal the cultural diversity and lush beauty of this small island.

Located off the coast of southeast China, Taiwan is a long and narrow island lying on a north-south axis. The island covers an area of 36,000 square kilometers (14,400 square miles) and is separated from China by the . There are several smaller islands off both the east and west coasts of Taiwan, i.e. Green Island, Orchid Island, Penghu, Jinmen and Mazu. As one of the small islands on the Pacific Rim, Taiwan occupies a strategic location for transportation in Asia, making it a busy hub for international flying routes.

Taiwan is a small island surrounded by the sea.

98 Tourists can visit the island all year round.

Mild and Pleasant Weather

With the Tropic of Cancer passing through southern Taiwan, the island is endowed with both sub- tropical and temperate climates. Visitors from northern latitudes who cherish warm sunshine could find themselves enjoying a year-round summer in southern Taiwan. The Kenting area is well-known for its South Asia flavor and relaxing atmosphere. On the other hand, travelers from southern latitudes may be surprised to find how mild the climate can be in Taiwan. In the mountain regions, tourists encounter green forests and refreshing air once they reach 1,000 meters above sea level. In fall and winter, it is even possible to sometimes see red maple leaves in certain areas of northern Taiwan.

There are four distinct seasons in Taiwan. The average temperature is around 22℃(72℉ ) and the lowest average 12℃(54℉ ). The weather in summer and fall is stable, which makes them the best seasons for traveling. In the winter, cold fronts sometimes render northern Taiwan damp and cold, but hot springs throughout the country make the island a favored winter destination for some international tourists.

Diverse Natural Environment The island of Taiwan was formed by the collision between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, giving the island its variety of landforms and geological characteristics. Multiple climates have made Taiwan a land of rich and diverse natural environment. There are 18,400 species of wildlife, of which 20%, such as Masu Salmon (Oncorhynchus masou formosanus), Formosan Rock Macaque (Macaca cyclopis), (Ursus thibetanus formosanus), and Swinhoe's Pheasant (Lophura swinhoii), are unique to Taiwan. There are 220 mountains with an elevation of 3,000 meters above sea level. Among these, Yushan with an altitude of 3,952 meters, is the highest mountain in Taiwan, as well as Northeast Asia.

2/3 of the island is covered by mountain forests. Volcanic eruptions millions of years ago left the Yangmingshan National Park in northern Taiwan with a unique post volcanic terrain. The lava rocks extend down to the ocean where they form the unique geological landscape of the northern shore. Rivers originating from various mountains cut through the rocks to create gorges and waterfalls. The best example is the world-renowned Taroko Gorge, an awe-inspiring miracle created by Nature.

The outside islands are known for their ocean farming, seabed hot springs, coral reef islands, Tao tribal culture, distinctive wartime constructions, and traditional architectures. Each island is unique in its own right and has proven itself a worthy tourist destination.

Cultural Diversity Taiwan has inherited the profound Chinese culture but various immigrant cultures are also found in the society. In the early 17th century, Taiwan was briefly occupied by mighty sea-going nations, such as Holland, Spain and Portugal, followed in 1895 by , who ruled for 50 years. After the end of WWII, Han immigrants from various parts of China began to relocate to Taiwan. Han immigrants from different periods, together with the 14 aboriginal tribes who are the true “native” residents, make Taiwan a melting pot for multiple cultures, arts, rituals, customs, and regional foods.

123 Editor's Note

Cultural heritage is something shared in common by all mankind, and they preserve these cultural assets in museums. It can be said that museums are the world’s most valuable organizations. Countless people have devoted their lives to the gathering and study of these artifacts, while governments and private sectors invest large sums in their preservation. Their goal is the same: to share valuable specimens and cultural relics with the public and preserve them intact. An inscription found on a bronze from the Shang/Zhou period says it all: “For the delectation of future generations.” Without doubt, this one succinct phrase has summed up the ultimate mission of all museum professionals!

Museum professionals in the 21st century are racking their brains to come up with innovative exhibitions. Members of related professions never cease trying to find better ways to replace the old with the new, thereby infusing the world of museums with limitless creativity. In addition to the educational goals of traditional displays, performance art has now become an accepted aspect of museum exhibitions. Various related services, such as gourmet food, coffee, tea, curio shops and tourism, have made museum operation a feast almost too sumptuous to absorb. A trip to the museum is guaranteed to provide the visitor with both spiritual and material satisfaction.

This pamphlet is designed for international travelers who are interested in cultural tours. The primary purpose is to introduce Taiwan's museums and to provide general information about cultural assets and sightseeing resources. This booklet has been expanded to include historic sites, tourist attractions, display halls, theaters, and famous scenic spots. Based on the concept of a “Cultural Tourism Booklet”, this pamphlet is the first attempt of its kind of Chinese Association of Museums (CAM). However, due to limitations of time, funds and human resources, it is inevitable that some may find it unsatisfying. We beg for your understanding that this guide has only been made possible through the joint effort of many people. Should the day come when CAM has greater resources to draw upon, the contents of future editions will surely be more complete and exciting.

Welcome to Taiwan's Museums!
