    Second Edition - 2014 INTRODUCTION When I was asked if I would write the history of the Ancient Skiers, I was excited and willing. My husband, Jim, and I were a part of those early skiers during those memorable times. We had “been there and done that” and it was time to put it down on paper for future generations to enjoy. Yes, we were a part of The Ancient Skiers and it is a privilege to be able to tell you about them and the way things were. Life was different - and it was good! I met Jim on my first ski trip on the Milwaukee Ski Train to the Ski Bowl in 1938. He sat across the aisle and had the Sunday funnies - I had the cupcakes - we made a bond and he taught me to ski. We were married the next year. Jim became Certified as a ski instructor at the second certification exam put on by the Pacific Northwest Ski Association (PNSA) in 1940, at the Ski Bowl. I took the exam the next year at Paradise in 1941, to become the first woman in the United States to become a Certified Ski Instructor. Skiing has been my life, from teaching students, running a ski school, training instructors, and most of all being the Executive Secretary for the Pacific Northwest Ski Instructors Association (PNSIA) for over 16 years. I ran their Symposiums for 26 years, giving me the opportunity to work with many fine skiers from different regions as well as ski areas. Jim and I helped organize the PNSIA and served on their board for nearly 30 years.

The American West cannot be understood without broadening analysis outside of the territorial space of the West. Incorporation of global events and transnational themes add to understanding of the American West as portrayed through one of its key identities—the ski industry. In 1936, Averell Harriman, chair of the Union Pacific Railroad, created America‟s first destination ski resort at Sun Valley, Idaho. Looking to Europe for inspiration, he imported European ideas and ski instructors to capitalize on the mountains of the American West, fostering a transnational industry. Ski mountains throughout the West built off of Sun Valley‟s success and modeled themselves after this first resort. This thesis explores the development of Sun Valley while also examining tensions which exist between transnational and national ambitions throughout history. Topics examined in this thesis are the development of Sun Valley and the ski industry, national concerns over the believed Nazi sympathies of Austrian ski instructors, the relationship of Hollywood with destination resorts, the Tenth Mountain Division, and changes in consumerism following World War II.

    For Immediate Release February 28, 2006 Media Contact: John Dakin (970) 949-1999 [email protected] GERMAN OLYMPIC TRIPLE MEDALIST ROSI MITTERMAIER HONORED AS 2006 LEGEND OF HONOR AT COUNTRYWIDE AMERICAN SKI CLASSIC VAIL, Colorado--A very special ceremony will round out the 2006 Countrywide American Ski Classic social festivities Saturday evening, March 25, as one of Germany’s most prolific ski racers will be honored as Rosi Mittermaier is inducted into the International Ski Hall of Fame at the Legends Banquet. “Rosi Mittermaier is a tremendous ambassador for the sport of skiing,” explained Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation. “Her competitive career ranks among the all time greats, while her professional endeavors continue to promote and further skiing at all levels. It is indeed an honor for us to welcome Rosi to the International Ski Hall of Fame as 2006’s Legend of Honor.” A triple Olympic medalist at the 1976 Games in Innsbruck, Austria, Mittermaier claimed the gold in Downhill and Slalom, while mining silver in Giant Slalom. She also collected an FIS World Championships gold medal in Combined at the Innsbruck Games. Mittermaier missed the Olympic hat trick by a mere 12-hundredths of a second as Canadian Kathy Kreiner spoiled the celebration with the Giant Slalom gold. One half second ahead of Kreiner’s pace at the midway timing split, the German lost precious fractions of a second when she took too direct a line into one of the final gates. The season-long 1976 campaign proved to be a special one for Mittermaier.
