Type by subsequent designation. Appeared first in puntata 138, fasc. 27 on unnumbered p. 3 under Gonostoma denudata as Ichtyococcus; on pp. 5 and 6 Bonaparte treated and I. poweriae. First subsequent designation of type not researched. Photichthys Hutton, 1873:269, Pl. 15 [ref. 2285] is an incorrect subsequent spelling; Hutton p. 269 says,"...Dr. Günther suggests that the name...should be altered to Photichthys, a suggestion...I willingly adopt."
