Appeared first in puntata 138, fasc. 27 on unnumbered p. 3 under Gonostoma denudata as Ichtyococcus; on pp. 5 and 6 Bonaparte treated Ichthyococcus ovatus and I. poweriae. First subsequent designation of type not researched. Unneeded replacement for Ichthyococcus Bonaparte, 1840; replaced because Günther felt name was inappropriately formed. Correct spelling for genus of type species is Gonostoma. •Synonym of Ichthyococcus Bonaparte, 1840 -- (Witzell 1973:118 [ref. 7172], Mukhacheva 1980 [ref. 8685], Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:259 [ref. 28944]). Photichthys Hutton, 1873:269, Pl. 15 [ref. 2285] is an incorrect subsequent spelling; Hutton p. 269 says,"...Dr. Günther suggests that the name...should be altered to Photichthys, a suggestion...I willingly adopt." The correct family is Phosichthyidae as used by Fowler 1974:256 [ref. 7156], not Photichthyidae of authors. •Valid, but spelled Photichthys Hutton, 1872 -- (Weitzman 1974:472 [ref. 5174], Schaefer et al. 1986:245 [ref. 5709], Paxton et al. 1989:188 [ref. 12442], Gomon et al. 1994:248 [ref. 22532]). •Valid as Phosichthys Hutton, 1872 -- (Harold 1999:1904 [ref. 24741], Paxton et al. 2006:430 [ref. 28995], Harold & Gomon 2008:237 [ref. 30629]).
