To illustrate the simple type of limb. This insect belongs to the family of the Tabanids, and is a well known and keen blood-sucker. It is mot with in our English woods and meadows. Fig. 2.-Middle leg of Chrysopilus aureus Mg. 0. Simple type. Belongs to the Leptids, and is not uncommon in long grass and meadows. Fig. 3.-Hind leg of Beris vallata Forst. 0. Simple type. Belongs to the Stratiomyidse ; is very common, and found on the hedges. Fig. 4.-Fore leg of Hydrophorus ; species undetermined ( 8 ). To illustrate the raptorial or predaceous type. Belongs to the Dolichopodidze, and resembles Aphrosylus in the structure of the legs, but has dissimilar mouth-parts. It is a small Australian insect, which I captured at Geelong, Vic. The park’s saproxylic beetle fauna, associated with dead wood and veteran trees, can be considered as nationally important. Ecological stoichiometry has emerged as a tool for exploring nutrient demand and evolutionary responses to nutrient limitation. Previous studies of insects have found predictable variability in stoichiometry, both in relation to body size and trophic mode, at ordinal levels or higher. Our study further examines the evolutionary and ecological lability in these traits by comparing the effects of body size, trophic mode (larval and adult) and larval habitat on the stoichiometry of insects within one order (Diptera). The study also expands on previous work by analyzing trophic mode both at coarse (detritivore, herbivore, predator) and fine (high- vs low- nutrient quality resources within trophic categories) scales and by comparing nutrient stoichiometry in two geographical regions, Sweden and Arizona. As predicted, adults feeding on nectar or pollen had the lowest body N content in the dataset. Additionally, for Diptera with predatory larvae, species low N diets had lower body N content than those with high N diets. -

Field research was aided by a contract between the Office of Naval Research, Department of the Navy, and the National Academy of Sciences, NR 160-175. Also I am greatly indebted to Dr. Edwin F. Cook for the kind assistance he has given me in working out the Scatopsidae. The drawings were made by Marian S. Adachi, University of Hawaii. FAMILY BIBIONIDAE Previously Bibionidae have been unrecorded from either Micronesia or Polynesia. Numerous species occur in all of the fringe areas of the Pacific but have been completely lacking in that part of Oceania inside a line from New Zealand, through New Caledonia, the New Hebrides, New Guinea, the Philippine Islands, Formosa, and Japan. A single species of Plecia is repre sented in the collection from the Palau Islands. It shows affinity with Plecia from Indonesia, and it is most probable that it originally came from there. The Afrotropical subgenus Disneyempis Smith of the genus Empis L. is redescribed and redefined on the basis of three synapomorphies, namely labrum lengthened, male eyes more or less broadly separated on frons with all ommatidia of equal size, fe male abdomen with bluish to purplish metallic reflections on terga 2-5. At present, the subgenus comprises six species: E. (D.) hir- sutipennis Smith as type species, E. (D.) jacksoni Smith, E. (D.) argentea sp. n., E. (D.) spinifemorata sp. n., E. (D.) proboprocera sp. n. and one unnamed species E. (D.) sp. 1. All species are described [except E. (D.) sp. 1] and keyed. The subgenus has a tropical African geographical range including Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Republic of Congo and Gabon. Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 D (Barrowhill, Otterpool and East Stour River) The tetrad TR13 D is an area of mostly farmland with several small waterways, of which the East Stour River is the most significant, and there are four small lakes (though none are publically-accessible), the most northerly of which is mostly covered with Phragmites. Other features of interest include a belt of trees running across the northern limit of Lympne Old Airfield (in the extreme south edge of the tetrad), part of Harringe Brooks Wood (which has no public access), the disused (Otterpool) quarry workings and the westernmost extent of Folkestone Racecourse and. The northern half of the tetrad is crossed by the major transport links of the M20 and the railway, whilst the old Ashford Road (A20), runs more or less diagonally across. Looking south-west towards Burnbrae from the railway Whilst there are no sites of particular ornithological significance within the area it is not without interest. A variety of farmland birds breed, including Kestrel, Stock Dove, Sky Lark, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Lesser Whitethroat, Yellowhammer, and possibly Buzzard, Yellow Wagtail and Meadow Pipit. Two rapidly declining species, Turtle Dove and Spotted Flycatcher, also probably bred during the 2007-11 Bird Atlas. The Phragmites at the most northerly lake support breeding Reed Warbler and Reed Bunting. In winter Fieldfare and Redwing may be found in the fields, whilst the streams have attracted Little Egret, Snipe and, Grey Wagtail, with Siskin and occasionally Lesser Redpoll in the alders along the East Stour River. Corn Bunting may be present if winter stubble is left and Red Kite, Peregrine, Merlin and Waxwing have also occurred.
