Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

The Afrotropical subgenus Disneyempis Smith of the genus Empis L. is redescribed and redefined on the basis of three synapomorphies, namely labrum lengthened, male eyes more or less broadly separated on frons with all ommatidia of equal size, fe male abdomen with bluish to purplish metallic reflections on terga 2-5. At present, the subgenus comprises six species: E. (D.) hir- sutipennis Smith as type species, E. (D.) jacksoni Smith, E. (D.) argentea sp. n., E. (D.) spinifemorata sp. n., E. (D.) proboprocera sp. n. and one unnamed species E. (D.) sp. 1. All species are described [except E. (D.) sp. 1] and keyed. The subgenus has a tropical African geographical range including Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Republic of Congo and Gabon. Seventeen families are commonly found in freshwater wetlands, with Ephydridae, Chloropidae, Sciomyzidae, Sphaeroceridae, and Scathophagidae being among the most important in terms of population size and species richness. Difficulty with sampling cryptic larval habitats and species identification chal- lenges may account for the exclusion of acalyptrate and other dipterans from wetlands ecology studies. Large populations are facilitated by the high productivity of freshwater wetlands and the high intrinsic rate of increase characteristic of many species. Higher dipterans exist in all freshwater wetland types, are microhabitat selective, and play significant roles in food webs. The status of the names Pherbina testacea (Sack, 1939) and Limnia setosa Yano, 1978 is revised based on the examination of the type material of both the species, additional specimens and an analysis of the published data. The following taxonomic changes are proposed: Ph. testacea is returned to the genus Limnia, as Limnia testacea, comb. resurr., and L. setosa, syn. nov., is placed in synonymy with L. testacea. The records of L. testacea (under both names) are reviewed. Limnia testacea is recorded for the first time from Mongolia, which considerably extends the range of this species. Резюме. Статус названий Pherbina testacea (Sack, 1939) и Limnia setosa Yano, 1978 пересмотрен на основе изучения типового материала обоих видов, дополнительных экземпляров и анализа ранее опубликованных данных. Предлагаются следующие таксономические изменения: вид Ph. testacea возвращен в род Limnia, как Limnia testacea, comb. resurr., а L. setosa, syn. nov., рассматривается в качестве младшего синонима L. testacea. Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme Newsletter 3: September 2003 Introduction This Newsletter gives news of progress with the Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme, includes a summary of currently available identification literature that can be used to determine the British species and announces a call in for available records prior to the production of a new identification guide to the British and Irish fauna. The Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme covers the 68 species of Sciomyzidae (67 species in Chandler, 1998 plus one added since by Cole, 2003) recorded from Britain and Ireland, plus the two species of Pelidnoptera now included in the Phaeomyiidae. The latter (Pelidnoptera fuscipennis and P. nigripennis) were formerly included as a subfamily of the Sciomyzidae, but Griffiths (1972) elevated the group to family status as part of a detailed phylogenetic study of the Diptera Cyclorrhapha using characters of the male genitalia. Additional evidence that supports the family status of the Phaeomyiidae has been obtained by Vala et al. (1990) who discovered that Pelidnoptera nigripennis has larvae that are specialist parasitoids of millipedes, whereas the larvae of all Sciomyzidae that have been reared feed on molluscs.
