OUR THOUGHTS ARE WITH RACE TIMER/SCORER EXTRAORDINAIRE JOHN SNITKO

Many if not most of you who have been at GLIRC races will be familiar with John Snitko, who has been the timer/scorer for the majority of GLIRC’s races since 2004. Sadly, John is now fighting through a very serious medical condition. He has stage 4 colon cancer. It has spread to his liver and other places in his abdomen. He started chemo early in May, and he will continue chemo every 2 weeks. Then they will recheck his scans in a couple of months to see how effective the chemo is. GLIRC JULY 2021 • FOOTNOTES 19 ALEX ELETTO AND KATIE MCGRATH LEAD THE WAY IN 30TH ANNUAL DAVID LERNER ASSOCIATES LONG ISLAND POLICE APPRECIATION 5K RUN

Highlighted by a big field, with over 400 runners registered and 297 of them making their way to the Eisenhower Park finish line, the 30th annual David Lerner Associates Long Island Police Appreciation 5 Kilometer Run on the evening of June 3rd was a major success by any standard.

The field was held down a bit by the weather services, who kept predicting a doom and gloom thunder and lightning storm that – very fortunately – never happened. The bottom line was a relatively cool and cloudy evening that produced perfect weather conditions for running. Alex Eletto wins it Katie McGrath wins it

Overall winners Alex Eletto and Katie McGrath took advantage of the conditions to turn in some very speedy times, with Alex roaring across the Eisenhower Park finish line in 17:14, and Katie scoring in 17:49, beating all but three of the men in the process. Jake Wigutow eaked past Thomas Mihailin to take second place honors overall. Shari Klarfeld held off Kim Minerva by three seconds to take second place among the women and earning first place in the 40-44 age group.

The Run was, as usual, a fundraiser for the Police Crisis Fund that continues to support police officers and their families in difficult times, with the first $1000 of the proceeds going to the Nassau Police Running Club and its Scholarship Fund.

24 FOOTNOTES JULY 2021 GLIRC HEY WE’RE HUMAN

Every monthly issue of Long Island Footnotes works to a very tight deadline and, occasionally, in our haste to get the magazine out in a timely manner, a mistake or two may show up. We try to catch them before going to press but sometimes the “gremlins” win out!

Please DO call errors and omissions of all kinds to our attention at (516) 349-7646.

A WORD ABOUT RACE RESULTS Patricia Walter JoAnn Molino We try very hard to include all Club members and their times when we report on the results of a particular race. BUT (and it’s a VERY big “BUT”), the process isn’t an automatic one. We pick out Club members by hand and, accordingly, the system can result in a name or two being left out.

So please forgive us if your name happens to be left out of a particular set of results. If it happens, please feel free to call the omission to our attention by calling (516) 349-7646, or by e-mailing us at [email protected] and we will be happy to rectify the omission in the following issue of Footnotes.

Even better -- if you want to make sure that your effort for a particular event is given proper recognition, email us right after JoAnne Kong Laura Vegas Steve Millon the event at [email protected] and you can be sure that your results will be included!

A WORD ABOUT FOOTNOTES ARTICLES

We gladly accept the literary efforts of our Club members, especially those relating to running, for publication in Footnotes, although we obviously need to reserve the right to edit submissions on the basis of the space needs of the overall magazine.

Our readers need to keep in mind that the views and ideas expressed in the articles submitted by our members are solely those of the writer, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Julie Vodola Kristen Meyer Ken Della Rocca editor or of the Greater Long Island Running Club.

26 FOOTNOTES JULY 2021 GLIRC “CAUMSETT AT HECKSCHER” – A STIRRING COMPETITION AND A GREAT DAY FOR GLIRC MEMBERS! It doesn’t get much better than this! With runners from 19 different States, plus one runner from Japan, on hand for the competition, was definitely the place to be on Sunday, June 13th! Moderate temperatures that capped in the mid 70s made for about as good a running day as you can get in June, although the summer temperature definitely took its toll on many of the runners. Highlighting the 50 K Championship Run was the winning performance of Preston Johnson of Kaysville, Utah. Johnson had a comfortable lead after nine of the 5K loops, and still had a shot at the race record of 2:48:56. The effort took its toll in his tenth leg, but he held on with determination to finish in 2:53:19, 38 seconds Patrick Smyth wins the 25K Alan Baisch in front of runner-up Kyle Masterson of Alamosa, Colorado. Brendan Martin finished 4th OA and was the first GLIRC member to cross the finish line, and Ryan Clifford in 9th place was the first Long Island finisher. Top honors for the women went to Randi Burnett of Dallas, Texas in 3:32:01, over four minutes in front of runner-up Regina Lopez of Azusa, California. The first GLIRC finisher and first Long Island finisher was Indira Schwarting. GLIRC members Kathy Dormer, Yvonne Leippert & Jodi Kartes- Heino swept the top three places in the Women’s Masters Division. Two National USATF Age Group records were set in this year’s 50K – Rick Lee of Bayville, New Jersey ran a new 60-64 age group record time of 3:31:44, and Gene Dykes of Bala Cynwyd,

Pennslyvania ran a 3:56:44 to set a new 70-74 age group record. Louis Zameryka Marc Sonnenberg Big news in the 25K was the first place OA finish by GLIRC’s own Patrick Smyth. The 20 year old Farmingdale star took top honors with a 1:29:09 finish, a solid 1:36 margin over runner-up Abel Perez, with Keith Guilfoyle scoring third OA. Ali Caruana was the women’s 25K winner, with Martha Delgado scoring as the first GLIRC member. Lin Gentling, the USATF liaison to the Run, put it all in proper perspective: “The one singular omnipresent emotion present in all the runners, volunteers , and spectators was the sense of unity in returning to a sense of normalcy. Racing again was all that it took to resume that yearned for normalcy in a sport that has brought great satisfaction to the lives of so many.” GLIRC finishers in the 50K Championship Run were Brendan Martin (4th OA, 1st 30-34, 2:59:39), Ryan Clifford (9th OA, 1st Long Island finisher, 3:16:27), Tommy Nettuno (2nd 50-54, 4:04:27), Amanda Scanlan Alicia Friedman Indira Schwarting
