Stage 2 was mainly comprised of G. magnificum G. ruprechtii African species G. ϫ oxonianum cultivars with selections of G. psilostemon, G. sanguineum and summer dormant species also assessed. Stage 3 included species such as G. macrorrhizum, G. phaeum and G. sylvaticum which benefit from a little shade. To complete the set a separate trial of geraniums suitable for the rock garden was also conducted. The soil on the Trials Field, though sandy Geranium ‘Blue Cloud’ (H4) 2004 and free draining, is rich in nutrients, due to it being Geranium ‘Brookside’ (H4) 2004 extensively cultivated for various trials. The soil has a pH of 7.5. Generally, hardy geraniums perform best on a soil Geranium ‘Mavis Simpson’ (H4) 2004 of medium to low fertility soil, so no fertiliser was added. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment.

    Diseases of Specific Florist Crops Keeping florist crops free of disease requires constant care and planning. Prevention is the basis of freedom from disease and should be an integral part of the general cultural program. The symptoms of the diseases of major florist crops are described individually by crop in a series of fact sheets. Geranium (Pelargonium hortorum) • Bacterial blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv. pelargonii): Tiny (1/16 in. diameter) round brown leaf spots, often surrounded by a chlorotic zone. Spots form when bacteria have been splashed onto the leaf surface. Subsequent systemic invasion of the plant leads to the development of a yellow or tan wedge-shaped area at the leaf edge and then to wilting of the leaf. Further progression of the disease may lead to brown stem cankers at nodes, brown to black vascular discoloration inside the stem, and tip dieback or wilting of all or part of the plant. Roots usually remain healthy-looking. Disease symptoms develop most readily under warm (spring) greenhouse temperatures. Spread is rapid during the handling and overhead irrigation associated with propagation. Only geraniums are susceptible to bacterial blight. P. hortorum (zonal) and P. peltatum (ivy) both show symptoms; P. domesticum (Martha Washington or Regal) is less likely to show symptoms. Hardy Geranium species may also be a source of infection; these will show leaf spot but not wilt symptoms. Infested plants should be destroyed; there are no chemical controls. Although culture- indexing procedures should have eliminated this disease from modern geranium production, it remains all too common in the industry today, causing large financial losses to geranium growers.

    Relative Ranking of Ornamental Flower Plants to Foraging Honey Bees (With Notes on Favorability to Bumble Bees) Whitney Cranshaw Colorado State University Observations were made during the 2007-2009 growing seasons on the relative attractiveness of various flowering ornamental plants to honey bees (Apis mellifera). This information was collected so that honey bee favorability - or lack of favorability - may be considered in plant selection. The study was conducted by repeated visits to public garden plantings in Larimer, Denver, Adams, and Cheyenne counties. Gardens were chosen that had large mass plantings of numerous flowering plants so that comparisons could be made and included the Denver Botanic Garden, gardens at Colorado State University (PERC, Flower Demonstration Planting), Welby Gardens, and Cheyenne Botanic Garden. These sites also were chosen because plantings had identification labeling. Plantings were visited between 2 and 12 times between mid-June and mid-September. Evaluations were made by examining plants that were in flower for the presence of honey bees. A planting was then given a relative ranking based on honey bee numbers. A 0-3 scale was used: 3 - Heavily visited by foraging honey bees 2 - Moderately visited by honey bees and foraged 1 - Honey bees seen occasionally visiting flowers 0 - Honey bees do not forage at these flowers Data were collected from a total of 319 different plant entries durig this study. Variation in rankings between dates did occur; where this occurred from multiple ratings the final ranking was rounded up to a whole number. Numerous other bees and other insects were commonly seen on many plants.
