Page 1 of 2 IOWA ENGINEERING SOCIETY Central Iowa Chapter SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION The Iowa Engineering Society’s Central Iowa Chapter offers a scholarship to graduating high school seniors interested in pursuing an engineering degree. IES Chapter scholarships are primarily directed to qualified students with the talent and commitment to succeed in an undergraduate engineering curriculum, for which the financial support and encouragement can make a difference. The scholarships are awarded only to U.S. citizens who are residents of Iowa and who will be attending the College of Engineering at either Iowa State University or the University of Iowa. The scholarships are awarded during the recipient’s senior year in high school, but the money is not distributed until the recipient has satisfactorily completed the first semester at either Iowa State University or the University of Iowa’s College of Engineering. The amount of the scholarship is $500 or $1000. As Funds are available, additional scholarships may be awarded. The Central Iowa Chapter also gives special scholarship consideration to children or grandchildren of Iowa Engineering Society, Central Iowa Chapter members. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: John Manzo (312-729-3656) MOUNT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT-ATHLETE NAMED GATORADE IOWA BOYS TRACK & FIELD PLAYER OF THE YEAR CHICAGO (June 22, 2017) — In its 32nd year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, today announced Tristan Wirfs of Mount Vernon High School as its 2016-17 Gatorade Iowa Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Wirfs is the first Gatorade Iowa Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year to be chosen from Mount Vernon High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Wirfs as Iowa’s best high school boys track & field athlete. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year award to be announced in June, Wirfs joins an elite alumni association of state track & field award-winners, including Lolo Jones (1997-98, Roosevelt High School, Iowa), Allyson Felix (2002-03, Los Angeles Baptist High School, Calif.), Robert Griffin III (2006-07, Copperas Cove High School, Texas), Grant Fisher (2013-14 & 2014-15, Grand Blanc High School, Mich.) and Candace Hill (2014-15, Rockdale County High School, Ga.). The 6-foot-6, 310-pound senior captured a pair of individual state titles at the Class 3A meet this spring, leading the Mustangs to second-place as a team. Wirfs hurled the discus 190 feet, 9.75 inches and put the shot 63-4.25. He also won both events at the Drake Relays where his winning mark of 66-3.25 in the shot ranked as the nation’s No. -

The Elk must also be a paid-up member through March 31, 2020. Great-grandchildren are not eligible. ○ The applicant must be a high school senior. ○ The applicant must apply online only. ○ If the applicant's parent and grandparent are both Elk members, the applicant must apply through the parent's Elks Lodge. ○ Applicants must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) in time to received their scores before the application deadline by December 31, 2019. ○ Students may apply for more than one ENF scholarship; however, they may win only one. Iowa Cheerleading Coaches’ Association NEWSLETTER May 2014 Jeanne Ehn, Editor PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Cheer Coaches: Greetings to all of our Iowa cheer coaches. Hopefully, a lot of our Iowa cheer coaches were able to attend ICCA’s Cheer Coaches Conference. Many of you have voiced praise on how much you had learned at the conference. There were some awesome speakers who shared their knowledge and love of cheerlead- ing, wonderful vendors to greet you, and new friendships made over the weekend. To tell everyone a little about myself – I live in Callender, Iowa (just 20 miles south of Fort Dodge) with my husband Chuck and our twin 17-year-olds (Jacob and Jacey). We also have three older children (Amanda who is married and lives in Callender), (David who lives in Fort Dodge) and (Ashley who is married and lives in Fort Dodge). We also have one granddaughter Paisley who is 4 years old. I own a gym in Fort Dodge and pretty much work with cheerleading 24/7. Yes, sometimes it is overwhelming, but I LOVE it. I have coached cheerleading at Prairie Valley High School for the past 20 years. Recently our high school joined with Southeast Webster. We are now undertaking a whole new adventure with a new name (Southeast Valley Jaguars). Any coach who has gone through this process knows that it is a huge under- taking from mascots, new colors and yes – new uniforms! This will be quite a project to get accomplished in the next couple of weeks. Our colors completely changed from red and black to teal, black, and silver. -

This book contains information pertaining to the large number of scholarships available at Indian Hills Community College. In each academic school year, hundreds of scholarships are awarded, either through a general fund or a named scholarship. The Indian Hills Foundation General Fund Scholarship provides an annual $600 award, while individual named scholarships can provide an annual award of $600 up to payment for tuition, fees, books, room & board. At Indian Hills, we believe in helping students. The administration, faculty and staff take pride in our high graduation rates and the successes of our graduates. In 2014-2015, ninety-nine percent of Indian Hills’ full-time employees gave to the scholarship fund. Annually, more than half volunteer their time in helping to raise funds to support scholarships. ESTABLISHING A SCHOLARSHIP Individuals and businesses can easily establish a named scholarship. The Indian Hills Community College Foundation offers a variety of options: • A minimum initial gift of $12,000 is needed to establish a perpetual (endowed) scholarship. • A minimum gift of $600 can be donated to fund an annual scholarship. • Potential donors might choose to include the Indian Hills Foundation in their Wills or list the Foundation as a full or partial beneficiary on a life insurance policy or a retirement account. -

It is part of a national effort to increase the number of first generation and low-income students pursuing a college degree or other higher education credential. The primary purpose of this effort is to help high school seniors navigate the college admissions process and ensure they apply to at least one postsecondary institution in the fall of their senior year of high school. The program was piloted in Iowa last year with 12 schools over a one-week period and has expanded to 30 high schools with events spanning the month of October.
