By 1976, the Welsh band MAN had been a working unit for eight years. At this point the only founding member www.ProgArchives.com was Mickey Jones. He was joined by long time members drummer Terry Williams, guitarist Deke Leonard, keyboard player Phil Ryan and John McKenzie on bass. Deciding to split at the end of 1976 the band also Melodic Rock / decided to document the final days of the band in a film. This rarely seen film has now been released on DVD AOR Music Imports, rarities, and is distributed by MVD. It features performances from the Roundhouse concert at the end of the tour, and new and reissues interviews are also featured as a bonus. Still it is well filmed and recorded and if you are a fan of this good old prog related hard rock, this DVD is sure to give hours of enjoyment. Im selben Jahr standen Latin Quarter dann auf der Main-Stage des legendären Glastonbury Festivals und spielten ein ausverkauftes Konzert im Hamburger Stadtpark. All of them equally progressive in their own way, and in some ways, share a common thread between them. But, ask any diehard prog-rock fan and I guarantee another name comes up each and every time: Gentle Giant. Although never quite attaining the same level of sales or status of celebrity as the aforementioned, Gentle Giant most certainly made a statement, left a mark and carved their names into the history books of English prog. A mixture of rock, funk, jazz, classical, and even a bit of punk, Gentle Giant was as progressive as they come—and then some. Holding down the fort for the better part of eight years was John Weathers. Although not their original drummer, it was Weathers that helped propel Gentle Giant to international fame with an interesting mix of bombastic backbeat, an ear for tuned percussion and the ability to play any time signature and style thrown his way. On my interview list from the beginning, John wasn’t an easy man to fi nd. A few Internet searches every so often didn’t turn up much until I happened to stumble across ‘Two Weeks In Pain - Under The Knife’ [http:// www.gorgg.org/UnderKnife1.htm], a twenty-fi ve-episode online diary of John’s experience in the hospital and under the care of the N.H.S.

    123 WOE UNTO THEM THAT LAY FIELD TO FIELD: CLOSER SETTLEMENT IN THE EARLY LIBERAL ERA Monique van Alphen Fyfe* This article undertakes a re-examination of the origins, construction and application of the Land for Settlements legislation in the early Liberal era. The Liberal's commitment to closer settlement reveals part of the story of highly contested land policy in colonial New Zealand. Land for Settlements legislation of the 1890s, aimed at "bursting up" the great estates, was predominantly the product of settlers' ideological aspirations and two determined politicians: John Ballance and John McKenzie. When measured against the rhetoric used to promote it, however, the policy was not necessarily effective: it was complicated by practical realities and a narrow vision of New Zealand as a vigorous Arcadian paradise. When contrasted with the treatment of Māori land, yet more of the complexity of the land issue and the frailties of the actors facing it are revealed. The article concludes by proposing that Liberal policy, while flawed in execution, may have nevertheless contributed something to the consolidation of the concept of New Zealand as an agrarian ideal, a concept that remains largely intact today. I INTRODUCING AN IDEOLOGY Ill fares the land, to hastening ills a prey; where wealth accumulates, and men decay.1 Liberal land policy has been an evocative and much examined topic for historians of decades past. The emergence of Waitangi Tribunal histories has since tended to homogenise Crown land policy such that very real shifts in government initiatives risk becoming overlooked. Land policy was, in fact, highly contested in colonial New Zealand.

    SULTANES DEL RITMO principios de 1980, Dire Straits fue nominado a dos premios Grammys en la categoría Mejor Nuevo Artista y Mejor Performance Vocal Rock, Dúo o A Grupo por “Sultans Of Swing”. Tras el largo descanso, en julio volvieron al estudio para darle forma a su tercer álbum con producción de Jimmy Iovine y Mark Knopfler. El tiempo lejos de los escenarios les dio a los músicos otra pers- pectiva de las cosas y Dire Straits se encaminó hacia un destino de mayor com- plejidad musical. Making Movies se graba entre el 27 de junio y el 14 de agosto de 1980. Durante las sesiones, las tensiones entre los hermanos Knop- fler finalmente explotan y David deja la banda 15 por diferencias creativas con su hermano; el 25 de julio se anuncia a la prensa especializada del quiebre. Sid McGinnis en guitarra y Roy Bittan en teclados, ambos de E Street Band de Bruce Springteen, se suman a la banda para comple- tar la grabación del álbum. Por cuestiones nun- ca aclaradas, McGinnis, Bittan y David Knopfler no aparecen acreditados en el álbum.
