Wade became the International President during the 84th Annual Convention held here in Tampa in October 2010 and will hand the baton over in New Orleans at the 86th Annual Convention. Wade’s dedication to this organization is untiring and we are grateful for his support. Immediate Past President and Event Chairman Captain Allen Thompson summarized the important elements of this awards banquet then introduced Danielle Johnson, Awards Committee Chair to announce this year’s award recipients. Awardees were given an engraved Mariner’s Clock in a beautiful wooden display case. In the “Unsung Hero” category there were three awardees: John McKenzie of OSG Ship Management; Bruce Passinault of CF Industries and Benny Hutchinson of International Ship Repair & Marine Services. These three employees were cited for their dedication and hard work behind-the-scenes, never seeking the limelight. There were three winners of the “Leadership” category: Alycia Napier McGlone of WWW Marine Insurance; Robert Fredere of The Mosaic Company; and, Jack Scheibly of Gulf Marine Repair. Leaders not only in their own organizations, these awardees also find time to share their talents and experience in service to professional organizations and their communities. The Tampa Propeller Club “Member of the Year” was awarded to Captain Allen L. Thompson, Jr., USCG (ret) for his noteworthy contributions and untiring efforts in support of the Propeller Club, Port of Tampa as a Member, Board Member and as an Officer. Captain Thompson later (in April at SERAC) was named the Southeast Member of the Year. Captain Thompson is the Executive Director for the Tampa Bay Pilots Association. The last award of the evening, “Maritime Person of the Year,” went to David McDonald, former Port Director for the Port Manatee Port Authority. Mr. McDonald (who recently retired) was employed by the Port Manatee Port Authority since 1975 becoming Executive Director in 1992. Upon retirement, Dave was the second longest serving port director in the United States. His accomplishments over the last 36 years+ are very significant. Once again, the Steak and Corn event held this year on March 20th at the Davis Island Garden Club proved to be amazing! The weather was 100% perfect, the attendance was a packed house of 200 and our speaker, Lincoln Tamayo was outstanding. Those individuals in attendance for Mr. Tamayo’s presentation, we were not only taken by his passion for his work as the Head of School for the Academy Prep in Ybor City, but were eager to learn more. After listening to Mr. Tamayo last night, you’ll know exactly why the school is performing at a much higher level than before Mr. Tamayo. Though everyone knows it is not just one person that makes a difference but in some cases it just takes the passion from one person to be contagious and infectious enough to do the job of many! So, thank you to our speaker AND thank you to the audience for whom he spoke. Great Job! Now for the preparation of this event, as you might know – it is major. Thank you to our board of directors who chipped in to help with setup and breakdown AND, of course, extra kudos to our Club Secretary Bill Lofgren who always does the work of 10 people. Dennis Manelli, Captain Sheryl Dickinson, Lincoln Tamayo & Dwayne Keith A great time was had by all!!! Another successful Shrimperoo! On April 17th the Propeller Club held their 2nd largest event of the year with nearly 925 in attendance! The weather was terrific, the beer very cold, the crowd excited and the Shrimp were outstanding! Event Committee Chairman Arthur Savage and his trusty loyal friend Rusty Ferrell certainly have the recipe down, although they do seem to get better at it every year! The barbeque (Baked Beans, Potato Salad & Cole Slaw) was prepared by Robert’s Meats on S. West Shore Boulevard in South Tampa. We thank everyone who joined us and hope you had a good time. As you know, this is one of the three fundraisers for the year. The proceeds enable us to accomplish the many initiatives set by the board of directors each year. To ALL the folks who came to help/volunteer – thank you! As if it were not for the dedicated board members and volunteers – this event simply cannot be the success that it has grown to become year after year – so our hats off to you ALL! (Photo right - members & guests having a good time at Shrimperoo!) (Photo left - this year’s Shrimperoo “pit crew”! These are the folks who were responsible for the preparation, set-up, cooking, serving and tear down this year – you name it – they did it! (l-r): Bill Lofgren, Arthur Savage, Bill Kuzmick, Andy Legge and Eddy Lai. Missing from this group photo are Nancy Simms and Rusty Ferrell.) Thank you to all our Shrimperoo Committee Chairs, board and the many volunteers! See you all next year! TAMPA BAY HARBOR SAFETY & SECURITY COMMITTEE (TBHSSC) By: Terry Fluke It has been an exciting year for the Tampa Bay Harbor Safety and Security Committee. One of prime missions of the committee is to serve as a conduit for the many diverse maritime interests doing business in or around Tampa Bay. The views of leaders from the business community as well as the many varied official and governmental authorities have given Tampa Bay the reputation as an international leader in dealing with and solving difficult problems. Such was the praise of VADM Parker from the Coast Guard’s Atlantic Command when he spoke to the January committee meeting as well as the Salute to the Coast Guard Dinner. The ability of so many different interests to be brought into one room on a quarterly basis is a hallmark of the success of the committee. This year the committee has worked closely with the Tampa Port Authority and U.S. Coast Guard on several very high profile events to include the April visit to the Port of President Obama and the planning activities for the Republican National Convention to be held on Channelside in August. Leading the Committee for another two years is Chairman Terry Fluke and Vice Chairman Rear Admiral Bill Merlin, who were unanimously reelected to serve 2012 - 2014. New Board members selected to replace retiring or vacant Board seats include Eddy Lai, of Gulf Marine, representing Shipyards; Captain Gaetano Gigliotti, representing the Cruise Industry; Rob Palmer of Kinder Morgan representing General Cargo Terminal Operators; Neil McManus of United Ocean Services, representing Vessel Operators (Dry Side); and Tony Miller of Marathon Petroleum, representing Bulk Petroleum. Leaving the Board to sit as an interested citizen in the “back of the room” was Steve Fidler, who was appointed Member-At-Large upon his retirement from the Port Authority in 2011. Steve as well as out-going Cruise Industry representative Captain Tringale, received special awards and recognition for their outstanding service to the Committee. Subcommittees have continued to play a vital role in the operations and safety of Bay life to include the Vessel Movement Committee, the Port Heavy Weather Advisory Group, and participation with the Cooperative Vessel Traffic Service, the PORTS system, and Area Maritime Security in conjunction with leadership from the U.S.
