Vaig tenir la gran sort de poder-los veure quan només faltaven cinc concert abans d'acabar la trajectòria de Dire Straits. Es el de la foto de l'entrada (abans si que feien entrades com Déu mana), que va en portada d'aquest article. Un 2 d'octubre de 1992 al Palau Sant Jordi. Només els hi quedaven els dies 3 i 4 també al Sant Jordi, 6 i 7 a la Plaça de Toros de Las Ventas de Madrid, i el 9 a La Romareda de Saragossa per posar punt i final a Dire Straits. Es publicaria el directe d'aquesta gira, On The Night (1993) i al 1995 la banda anunciava la seva dissolució. Son d'aquelles coses que et passen a la vida que sense saber-ho acaben transcendint a gairebé fet històric. Dire Straits (que traduït ve a ser, situació desesperada o passar necessitat) és una banda de Rock britànica amb influències del Blues i del Rock & Roll més clàssic, fundada al 1977 per Mark Knopfler (guitarra i veu), David Knopfler (guitarra), John Illsley (baix) i Pick Withers (bateria). El seu líder fonamental és Mark Knopfler, les seves genials composicions, el seu estil de veu tan característic i la seva forma de tocar la guitarra sense pua són els senyals d'identitat d'una de les bandes de més èxit de la història del Rock. Sense por a equivocar-se es pot afirmar que Dire Straits és Mark Knopfler, de qui les essències bàsiques provenen de la seva adoració per les lletres de Bob Dylan i del Rock arrelat en el Blues de Robert Johnson, amb deixos d'Eric Clapton o J. J. Cale. Poc després de les 18:00 del 13 de juliol de 1985, Dire Straits pujava a l'escenari del Wembley Stadium formant part del Live Aid, tocant per una audiència mundial que a la televisió va assolir 1.900 milions d'espectadors. La seva actuació, entre U2 i Queen, va començar amb Money For Nothing (amb Sting), i després arribaria una versió èpica de la cançó que els va convertir en súper estrelles, Sultans Of Swing. "Va suposar un sentiment molt especial formar part d'una cosa tan única, el Live Aid va ser un privilegi únic per a tots nosaltres. S'ha convertit en un record fabulós", recorda el baixista John Illsley. La posició de Dire Straits com a grans senyors de la MTV contrastava amb els orígens humils de Sultans Of Swing. El cantant i guitarrista Mark Knopfler l'havia escrit al 1977, la inspiració per a Sultans Of Swing va venir després de veure a una banda de Jazz tocar en un pub pràcticament desert a Deptford, al sud de Londres una nit plujosa. Sense immutar-se, al final de la pèssima actuació, el cantant amb molt entusiasme va dir, ?Bona nit i gràcies, som els Sultans del Swing?, Mark Knopfler va trobar divertit el contrast entre la banda, l'entorn i el seu nom grandiloqüent, però com a mínim Knopfler va sortir del pub amb la llavor d'una idea. "Vivíem al costat del no res i ni tan sols podíem pagar la factura del gas, no ens anomenàvem Dire Straits per casualitat (per la traducció del nom). La primera vegada que vaig escoltar al Mark tocar Sultans Of Swing va ser en aquell apartament, però la cançó era completament diferent. Fins i tot Knopfler pensava que li faltava xispa, la cançó va agafar un toc de Blues incendiari després d'aconseguir els diners per comprar una Stratocaster de 1961. Un dia em va dir, recordes aquella cançó de la que et vaig parlar?, he refet del tot l'estructura de l'acord. La va tocar i em va sonar de meravella. Tot és increïblement senzill, és fascinant la manera de tocar-la. És el ritme que gira entorn de la guitarra, un baix simple i la bateria d'acompanyament. Aquesta és la historia. Totes les cançons bones tenen una història?, recorda John Illsley. Mentre buscaven desesperadament un contracte discogràfic, Dire Straits al juliol del 77 van llogar un petit estudi de vuit pistes. Després, van dur la maqueta gravada amb cinc cançons, que incloïa Sultans Of Swing, al DJ de Radio London, Charlie Gillett. "Charlie es va tornar absolutament boig amb la gravació, a l'emissió en directe va dir, posaré això fins que algú signi a aquesta banda, cosa que em va semblar bastant atrevida. Al cap de dos mesos, Dire Straits signava per una discogràfica de les grans, Phonogram, portant-los als Basing Street Studios per gravar el seu àlbum de debut, amb el productor Muff Winwood, antic membre de Spencer Davies Group i germà de Steve Winwood de Traffic. Però, com explica John Illsley, ?El problema que teníem era que no podíem aconseguir que Sultans Of Swing sonés tan bé com a la maqueta. Hi va haver fins i tot un moment en què la demo es va considerar com la que sortís com a single?. Tot i això, finalment ho van tornar a re gravar amb l'aprovació de tothom. Sultans Of Swing va sortir al mercat al maig del 78, però no va causar cap impacte a Gran Bretanya. Aleshores, les coses van començar a moure's amb un impuls gairebé casual. L'àlbum homònim va sortir a l'octubre, però les vendes no acabaven d'anar be tot i que ràpidament va arribar a disc d'or a Holanda. "Vaig rebre aquella trucada de la companyia discogràfica dient que no havíem venut 25.000 àlbums", recorda John Illsley. "Després va sortir als Estats Units i allà es va disparar, les emissores de ràdio van començar a posar Sultans Of Swing, convertint-se en una bogeria. Com que als Estats Units va ser un èxit, es va tornar a re editar al Regne Unit i va passar una cosa realment peculiar, va començar a estendre's com un foc incontrolat?. A principis del 79, el single havia desaparegut del Top 10 als dos costats de l'Atlàntic, com donant una oportunitat a l'àlbum, amb una estètica poc atractiva però amb unes cançons intemporals i amb un Mark Knopfler que semblava el punt de trobada entre JJ Cale i Bob Dylan, despatxava més de set milions de còpies. De cop, Mark Knopfler es converteix en el ?guitar hero? més gran del Regne Unit des d'Eric Clapton. Fins i tot Bob Dylan el va trucar mentre estaven gravant el segon àlbum, Coummuniqué (1979), reclutant a Knopfler i el bateria de Dire Straits, Pick Withers, per tocar al seu àlbum, Slow Train Coming (1979). Dire Straits, per descomptat, es va convertir en una de les bandes britàniques amb més èxit dels anys 80. L'èxit Sultans Of Swing va ser la carta de presentació i probablement la seva millor cançó. És el resum perfecte del que són Dire Straits. El primer tema de l'àlbum de debut de Dire Straits és de lo milloret que han gravat, de fet, Down To The Waterline, em sembla una de les seves millors cançons amb un dels seus millors solos de guitarra. Rock Blusero o Blues Rockero combinat amb Booggie i ritmes de Blues intens completen altres hits del disc i fonamentals a la carrera de la banda com son, Water Of Love i Setting Me Up.     About the Filmmakers Although he is known primarily as an author, Timothy Ferris has been involved in television since age sixteen, when he wrangled seagulls for NBC’s Omnibus and shot film for the Tonight show. While in high school he anchored a live Saturday-morning panel program, Youth Meets Business, which he describes today as “so stultifyingly boring that I believe its only viewers some mornings were our parents,” and played a defense attorney in a youth-oriented courtroom drama “that even our parents gave up watching.” Undaunted, Ferris went on to write and present two PBS specials — The Creation of the Universe and Life Beyond Earth. The two aired back-to-back in 1999, making Ferris one of the few nonfiction filmmakers to have an entire night of prime-time network programming devoted to his work. In addition to producing, writing, and narrating Seeing in the Dark, Ferris shot several of its time-lapse sequences, made field recordings for its soundtrack, and designed its special effects. Ferris is the author of ten books, including Seeing in the Dark, on which the film is based, named by The New York Times as one of the ten best books of the year. He produced the Voyager phonograph record, an artifact of human civilization launched aboard the twin Voyager interstellar spacecraft and now exiting the outer reaches of the solar system, and was among the journalists selected as candidates to fly aboard the space shuttle in 1986. Drengsgaard Many consider him one of the greatest guitar slingers in the world. Others think that his songs are best used as sleeping pills. The British musician Mark Knopfler has a tendency to make people dis- agree. He has done that ever since he entered the international music scene with a red Fender guitar around his neck more than 25 years ago and started creating a name for himself. What Knopfler’s fans especially admire him for is his elegant fingerpicking technique and his melancholy, personal songs that he sings with his subdued, hoarse voice. In the general public he is probably most well-known as the frontman of Dire Straits, one of the world's biggest rock groups up through the 1980s. Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1949. Later, the family moved to northern England, where Knopfler studied to become a journalist and later an English teacher. Although he did use both his educations professionally, the guitar appealed more to the young Knopfler. As a teenager, he fell in love with the instrument and managed to save up £50 for his first electric guitar. From the mid-1960s he played in various local groups in Leeds, and in 1973 he went to London to try his luck as a rock musician. Here his guitar was heard in various contexts, but without great success. In 1977 he moved into a flat with his brother David, who also played guitar, and the bassist John Illsley.

    Vicente Amigo Tierra Different. Global. Surprising. That's how you can describe Vicente Amigo's new album Tierra, the most innovative and international of his career which will be released in February 2013. The great Flamenco guitar player has opened his music's window to the fresh air of the British producer Guy Fletcher and recorded in London with musicians from Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler and Capercaillie, in order to offer an exceptional and brave album in which Flamenco music blends naturally with other music styles, opening new paths without losing depth, holding tightly to the inspirational Southern Spanish sounds but wrapped in Celtic melodies, linking light and mist, hovering over different styles to create something completely new. “I met Guy in Córdoba last year, at a Mark Knopfler show during the Guitar Festival”, says Vicente Amigo. “We were introduced by the show's promoters, and the initial idea of playing a song with them developed into a new main objective: I wanted to fuse with all those great musicians. My proposal was to embrace all our freedoms: mine, his as a producer, and the musicians' who collaborated. That is far more important, at a certain point, than music itself”. The album Tierra has been produced by Guy Fletcher (Kent, 1960), who was Dire Straits' keyboard player and Mark Knopfler's inseparable collaborator. As a musician he has also worked with Roxy Music, Mick Jagger, Nothing Hillbillies, Randy Newman, Tina Turner, Willie De Ville, Brian Ferry, Aztec Camera ... An emblematic British musician who has placed Vicente Amigo's guitar in a new dimension of lyricism, dream-state, rhythmic beats, tone variety, brightness … An artistic connection going beyond different types of music, styles, languages.

    SULTANES DEL RITMO principios de 1980, Dire Straits fue nominado a dos premios Grammys en la categoría Mejor Nuevo Artista y Mejor Performance Vocal Rock, Dúo o A Grupo por “Sultans Of Swing”. Tras el largo descanso, en julio volvieron al estudio para darle forma a su tercer álbum con producción de Jimmy Iovine y Mark Knopfler. El tiempo lejos de los escenarios les dio a los músicos otra pers- pectiva de las cosas y Dire Straits se encaminó hacia un destino de mayor com- plejidad musical. Making Movies se graba entre el 27 de junio y el 14 de agosto de 1980. Durante las sesiones, las tensiones entre los hermanos Knop- fler finalmente explotan y David deja la banda 15 por diferencias creativas con su hermano; el 25 de julio se anuncia a la prensa especializada del quiebre. Sid McGinnis en guitarra y Roy Bittan en teclados, ambos de E Street Band de Bruce Springteen, se suman a la banda para comple- tar la grabación del álbum. Por cuestiones nun- ca aclaradas, McGinnis, Bittan y David Knopfler no aparecen acreditados en el álbum. En el plano musical, Dire Straits refina su sonido y recupera buena par- te de la contundencia de la que álbum anterior carecía, volviendo nuevamente al sonido rockero nutrido de vitalidad y buenos arreglos. “Tunnel Of Love”, que abre la placa, es un buen ejemplo de ello. Mark Knopfler se muestra como un muy inspirado compositor, cantante y guitarrista en una época la que la músi- ca empezaba a enrarecerse por tantos ritmos bailables, sonidos artificiales y letras insulsas que solo iba a derivar en la decadencia de la música pop tal co- mo se la conocía hasta ese momento.
