Because no systematic methodology for conducting such an analysis yet exists, I have synthesized scholarship from anthropology, medicine, and psychoanalysis to construct an appropriate paradigm. Specifically, I bring together the anthropologist’s “couvade,” the physician’s “couvade syndrome,” and the psychoanalyst’s gender-inflected model of the unconscious. Informed by this interdisciplinary scholarship, I offer a composite theory of couvade desire. I then apply that theoretical model to early modern figurations of masculine pregnancy. I find that the pervasive use of such figurations during the period results from ahistorical bodily disparities and historically-specific epistemological circumstances. The so-called “literary couvade” thus modulates: it directly challenges essentialist claims on the one hand, while simultaneously acknowledging the inexorable link between masculinity and a bodily incapability to give birth. Masculinity, in this model, appears disabled . Mitigating the disability, however, is a cultural imaginary unfettered by modern anatomical knowledge. Key aspects of human reproduction were still seductively obscure in the early modern period. Women birthed babies, that much was plain; but, perhaps men had a compensatory system of reproduction. Perhaps, some speculated, that system was superior to the messy, merely material capability exclusive to women. Masculinity could, in this regard, rival maternity for social significance without disclosing any act of appropriation from maternity. Such a dynamic resembles closely Rene Girard’s paradigm of “mimetic desire.” Crucial to mimetic desire is an indifference to the ostensible object 8 on the part of both rival subjects. The Desire to Feed or the Desire to Be Fed?: The Entangled Relation Between Bloom and the Maternal ♣ Figure in Ulysses Tsung-huei Huang National Taiwan University Abstract The question as to whether Leopold Bloom, for all his gentleness and generosity, tends to have a biased conception of “woman” is a controversial one. Instead of charging Bloom with politically incorrect gender assumptions, this paper will argue that Bloom does not see all women through a distortional speculum. Woman’s role as a mother, for one thing, is far from being the target of Bloom’s disparagement. What significance does Bloom envisage in the maternal figure that prompts him to exempt the mother from the category of the threatening other? Seeking to penetrate into Bloom’s complicated relation with the maternal figure, this paper first sketches how Bloom shows his sympathy to- wards women whenever they are thought of as caretakers or murderers. I proceed to argue that his eagerness to identify with the mother can hardly escape our attention if we track Bloom’s desire to feed. Reading Bloom’s desire to feed from a psychoanalytic pers- pective, I demonstrate how this desire is entangled with womb envy and how Bloom’s own fantasy of becoming a mother can help him handle the trauma of losing his son. Further, I contend that Bloom’s identification with the mother is vindicated by his desire to be fed as well. The desire reveals Bloom’s underlying wish to be impregnated by the mother and thereby become a mother himself.

These texts contribute to the creation of global networks of affective and social relations, critique the specific corporate media texts from which they emerge, and undermine homophobic ideologies that prevent authentic queer representation in mainstream media. Intervening in dominant scholarly and popular arguments about slash fans, I maintain a rigorous distinction between the act of reading homoerotic subtexts in TV shows and writing fiction that makes that homoeroticism explicit, in every sense of the word.This emphasis on writing and the circulation of responsive, recursive texts can best be understood, I argue, through the framework of Rhetorical Genre Studies, which theorizes genres and the ways in which they are deployed, modified, and circulated as ideological and social action. I nuance the RGS concept of uptake, which names the generic dimensions of utterance and response, and define my concept of queer uptake, in which writers respond to a text in ways that refuse its generic boundaries and status, motivated by an ideological resistance to both genre and sexual normativity.

Loren, Scott Abstract: Though the films of David Cronenberg might not always be concerned with gender froma social constructivist or performative perspective, I think one readily agrees with Linda Ruth Williams’ claim that “for Cronenberg, anatomy is anything but destiny”3. For decades, his characteristic mutations of gendered bodies have repeatedly accompanied the destabilization of fixed notions about gender. It seems that the most fixed notion of gender to be found in his work is that gender is mutable. Likethe physical boarders to bodies in his films, gender is repeatedly undone, constantly shifting, threatening to become something else. For Cronenberg, a perpetual undoing and rearticulation of gender raises the question of when a man becomes a man in a rather unconventional manner. His films initially encourage us to ask other questions, like: “When does a man become a walking, speaking anus?” (Naked Lunch); “when does a man become an insect?” (The Fly); “when does a man become a machine?” (Videodrome, The Fly, Crash, eXistenZ). Of course one would also have to ask: “When does a man become a woman?” (Crimes of the Future, M. Butterfly) “When is a man completely unable to enter manhood?” (Spider) “When is a man a monster?” and “Is a man ever ‘simply’ a man?” (most of his films). It seems that with the release of each new film, one must rearticulate inquiries into the staging of gender in Cronenberg’s work, which is precisely what I wish to do here.

When they met, both were married and had tried writing before, but their partnership pushed them into a new kind of life in which writing took precedence. During this process, they described their relationship as literarily fertile; a few years later, Nin actually became pregnant with Miller's child and decided to have an abortion.
