U.S. detention of key Shiite raises ire BRIAN MURPHY Associated Press BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. troops detained the eldest son of Iraq's most influential Shiite politician for nearly 12 hours Friday as he crossed back from Iran - the same route Washington believes is used to keep powerful Shiite militias flush with weapons and aid. Even though the U.S. ambassador issued a rapid apology, the decision to hold Amar al-Hakim risks touching off a backlash from Shiite leaders at a time when their cooperation is needed most to keep a major security sweep through Baghdad from unraveling. It also highlights the often knotty relationship between U.S. military authorities and Iraq's elected leaders, whose ties to neighboring patrons - Syria backing Sunnis, and Iran acting as big brother to majority Shiites - add fuel to sectarian rivalries and bring recriminations from Washington about alleged arms smuggling and outside interference. Shiite reaction to the detention was quick and sharp, with some officials suggesting it was a veiled warning about the limits of ties to Iran. "What happened is unacceptable," Shiite lawmaker Hamid Majid Moussa told Al-Forat television. "The Iraqi government and the American forces must put an end to such transgressions," Shiite lawmaker Hamid Majid Moussa told Al-Forat television. The station is just one part of the multilayered clout of the al-Hakim family. Al-Hakim's father, Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, met with President Bush at the White House in December. He is the leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, or SCIRI, the country's largest political force. -

INTELLECTUAL DISCOURSE, 2005 VOL 13, N0 2, 161-179 Salience of Ethnicity among Burman Muslims: A Study in Identity Formation Khin Maung Yin∗ Abstract: Muslims, constituting about thirteen percent of the total population of Myanmar or Burma are not a monolithic group and are unable to provide a united front in their struggle to realize their just demands. They are divided into many groups and their relationship with each other is conflictual. As the cases of Indian and Bamar (Burman) Muslims show, they rely upon ethnicity, rather than religion, for identity formation and self-expression. Burma, known as Myanmar since 1989, is the second largest country in ASEAN or South East Asia.1 It stretches nearly 1500 miles from North to South. With an area of 678,500 square km and a population of about 48 million, it lies at the juncture of three regions of Southeast Asia, South Asia and East Asia. It is situated between two Asian giants, India and China, and shares borders with Bangladesh, Thailand and Laos. Burma is more significant than many other countries in the region as it is surrounded, in the southwest and south, by the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. It lies, in the words of Huntington, across the fault lines of the Hindu, Buddhist and Confucian civilisations.2 Burma or Myanmar is a nation with many races and there are about 135 ethnic groups. Its population is nearly 50 million. The majority are Bamar, but the Shan, Kachin, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Rakhine, Burmese Muslims, Indian Muslims, Chinese Muslims and others are prominent minority groups in Burma. -

Iraq: Politics, Elections, and Benchmarks Kenneth Katzman Specialist in Middle Eastern Affairs March 29, 2010 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RS21968 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress Iraq: Politics, Elections, and Benchmarks Summary Iraq’s political system, the result of a U.S.-supported election process, has been increasingly characterized by peaceful competition, as well as by attempts to form cross-sectarian alliances. However, ethnic and factional infighting continues, sometimes using key levers of power and undemocratic means. This was in evidence in the successful efforts by Shiite Arab political leaders to disqualify some prominent Sunni Arab candidates in the March 7, 2010, national elections for the next Council of Representatives (COR, parliament), which will form the next government. Election-related violence occurred before and during the election, although not at levels of earlier years or at a level to significantly affect voting, except perhaps for Baghdad city. With all votes counted, although not certified, the cross-sectarian “Iraqiyya” slate of former Prime Minister Iyad al-Allawi unexpectedly has gained a plurality of 91 of the 325 COR seats up for election. Nuri Kamal al-Maliki’s slate came in a close second, with two fewer seats, and a rival Shiite coalition was a distant third with 70. The main Kurdish parties, again allied, won 43. Allawi’s slate had been expected to get the first opportunity to put together a majority coalition to form a government. However, Maliki and other Shiite parties—opposing what they claim is the mostly Sunni Arab base of the Allawi slate—are in extensive discussions to put together a coalition that would be able to determine the next government. -

10: Islamic education in Myanmar: a case study Mohammed Mohiyuddin Mohammed Sulaiman Introduction `Islam', which literally means `peace' in Arabic, has been transformed into a faith interpreted loosely by one group and understood conservatively by another, making it seem as if Islam itself is not well comprehended by its followers. Today, it is the faith of 1.2 billion people across the world; Asia is a home for 60 per cent of these adherents, with Muslims forming an absolute majority in 11 countries (Selth 2003:5). Since the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, international scholars have become increasingly interested in Islam and in Muslims in South-East Asia, where more than 230 million Muslims live (Mutalib 2005:50). These South-East Asian Muslims originally received Islam from Arab traders. History reveals the Arabs as sea-loving people who voyaged around the Indian Ocean (IIAS 2005), including to South-East Asia. The arrival of Arabs has had different degrees of impact on different communities in the region. We find, however, that not much research has been done by today's Arabs on the Arab±South-East Asian connection, as they consider South-East Asia a part of the wider `East', which includes Iran, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Indeed, the term `South-East Asia' is hardly used in modern Arab literature. For them, anything east of the Middle East and non-Arabic speaking world is considered to be `Asia' (Abaza 2002). According to Myanmar and non-Myanmar sources, Islam reached the shores of Myanmar's Arakan (Rakhine State) as early as 712 AD, via oceangoing merchants, and in the form of Sufism. -

Where possible, the United States should therefore encourage The Coming Turkish- Turkish and Iraqi cooperation and economic integration as a key part of its post-2011 strategy for Iraq and the region. The Popularity of Mawlana Rumi and the Mawlawi Tradition ibrahim gamard It is an amazing phenomenon that, hundreds of years having passed since his death in 1273, Mawlana Jalal al-Din Rumi, the great mystic poet whose fame has been lasting in the East, has now become so well known in the West. At the same time, few people have heard anything about the Mawlawi (Turkish: Mevlevi ) Sufi tradition other than per - formances of the ‘whirling dervishes’. And yet it is the Mawlawi tradi - tion that has preserved the spiritual wisdom teachings of Mawlana (Turkish: Mevlana), his disciples and his descendants for more than seven centuries. The Mawlawi¯ S AMAc At the end of the Ottoman Empire there were one hundred and four - teen Mawlawi centres (takya; Turkish, tekke) in existence and it has been estimated that there were about one hundred thousand Mawlawis throughout the Empire. This came to an end in 1925 when the Turkish Republic outlawed all Sufi organizations and closed their centres. The famous Whirling Prayer Ceremony (sama c; Turkish, sema), which for centuries had been performed only at Mawlawi centres inside special ‘whirling ceremony’ halls (sama c-khana; Turkish, semahane), was forbidden for nearly thirty years thereafter. The Mawlawis had faithfully commemorated the anniversary of Mawlana’s death every year. This was based on the Sufi custom of celebrating the anniversary of the death of a revered saint (wali; Turkish, veli ) as if it were a ‘wedding’ (curs, carus) when the soul of the saint was believed to have ‘reunited’ with God. Like all Sufis, the Mawlawis commemorated Mawlana’s death according to the Islamic lunar calendar. -

Iraq had been governed by groups which belonged to the Arab Sunni minority since the Iraqi state emerged out of the former Otto- man Empire in 1921. More recently, new political actors are in the ascendancy, rep- resenting the Kurdish minority and the Shia majority in Iraq. -

This workshop looked at some of the key drivers of this, such as the troubled legacy of foreign intervention, state failure, regional rivalries between Saudi Arabia, Iran and others, ruling strategies of authoritarian regimes as well as the spread of identity and sect-based political movements. With in-depth analysis of the two key arenas of sectarian conflict in the contemporary Middle East, Syria and Iraq, and a paper on the consequences of state collapse, this paper also makes recommendations on how the EU could help reduce sectarian tensions. Prof. Derya Gürses Tarbuck June, 2014, 199 pages Claims of holy war characterized the Middle Ages in both Muslim Anatolia and Christian Europe, where soldiers on both sides were portrayed as holy warriors. Named gazis, akıncıs, alps, chevaliers and knights, they came from the elite military classes. Literary depictions of these men as holy warriors were fundamentally idealized topoi created by writers who were patronized by or were close to those in power.
