The Cumbrian Club should be commended for their reliable information needed, need I say more? Since my last report in the spring journal I have had an interesting and enjoyable journey as I come to the end of my first year with the Society. In May I had the pleasure of attending my first conference where I managed to put many faces to the voices from the phone calls I receive. I enjoyed the farm visits and the atmosphere on the Tuesday evening was unforgettable. How can I not mention my wrestling debut which I can assure you was not in the job description! It was great working with Willie and Ann Whiteford and Annabell Armstrong for my first conference and I have already got to work with the Derbyshire club members for 2016.

I attended the in June where again I got chance to match faces to voices! The staffing of the stand was very professional and thanks must go to Elaine for her assistance and guidance at this event. In July I went to our National Show during Livestock and it was great to see a mass of blue in the show ring, well done to all our younger members who were present. Rhos Aber Reality EX 91

23 The Ayrshire Journal Hugh Stevenson Written by Willy Templeton

So picture the scene my good friends, Isobel and Vicki walk into the Ayrshire 2015 Winner Championship ring, to present the Hugh Stevenson Trophy, and the memories come flooding back of Hugh.

I asked Vicki if I could have a look at the Trophy as I hadn’t seen it for many years, and I looked at all the names engraved and think all of these young breeders have had the opportunity to show off their talents, and have been rewarded with a trip abroad to enhance their talents even more! What a legacy has been left to the breed by Hugh and the late Murray Stevenson. (Ironic that one of the best bulls Murray bred was indeed Bankend Legacy!)

Anyway I digress, just after my wee trip L to R: Vicki Silvera, David Lawrie and Isobel Neil down memory lane at the Highland, our very own Cristiano Ronaldo (AKA Duncan Hunter) asked me if I would stepping stone they have created in our breed! Murray Stevenson was write this to remind everyone what Hugh was like! Well, let me tell you, it a man before his time, and not only was he a great breeder, he was was such a great honour to be the first person to win this award as I was probably one of the very best farmers in Ayrshire, which is rather a best buddies with Hugh whom was tragically taken from us in that fateful competitive area let me tell you. I was extremely lucky to call Murray a accident. As I remarked to someone just before the final interview of the mentor of mine and he certainly helped me raise my game in the world of competition “It’s not life threatening, it’s more important than that!” So cattle breeding, and I was sure at this point a certain Blaise Tomlinson is enough about me as this is about Hugh and Murray and the wonderful reading this and thinking the same thing!

The Ayrshire Journal 24 Memorial Trophy

So what was Hugh like? Hugh was a young man with enormous enthusiasm for everything he did, now bear in mind he was an extremely talented footballer who had the opportunity of a scholarship to a training camp in America, but declined because he wanted to stay at home with the cows to get ready for Agriscot. Now Hugh was lucky because at this time Murray also had some Holsteins that were doing extremely well – i.e. Shalama Inspiration Kimo, Champion Heifer at the National Holstein Show 1993- but Hugh’s heart truly lay with the Ayrshires and it was around this time that toplining and body clipping arrived!

So let me take you back to the Royal Show of 1994. I remember telling Hugh I was going to bodyclip and topline my in-calf heifer and he wanted to come and watch. This was the first Ayrshire to be clipped this way and Hugh talked Murray into clipping the Bankend cows this way, and Hugh wanted to help so I handed him a set of clippers and with a few instructions away he went. The next thing we knew Jack Rennie came round and asked if we would do his, and the next thing we knew it was dark and we had clipped 24 cows. Now just to be clear, this was Hugh’s first proper day’s clipping, but by the end of that day he was able to do a show topline! (Yes, and he was only 14! - Hugh was one of those guys who was rather annoyingly good at everything he did LOL). Anyway, show day came and went with the usual drama, but Hugh and I focused on the next day as that was the Presentation Class (showmanship) and stockjudging day. So first up was the Presentation Class, and I was in the seniors first. Now my old pal Salvador, Glencairn Ayrshires (Timbrell calls him Pedro if that rings any bells) said he would give my tie a Windsor knot which would bring me luck, and Hugh said if that’s true he wanted one as well and we duly won the Seniors and Juniors respectively and Hugh, bless him, insisted it was all down to Salvy’s Windsor knots.

Let me say this, I am trying to give you all my insight to the commitment, dedication, humour and fire that this young man had in his belly which made him the lovable young man he was. I do hope at this point that all Ayrshire Young Breeders realise it is an honour to compete in this competition, never mind winning it, and I think it would be appropriate at this time to salute the Stevenson family for creating something so positive from such a tragic loss. Like I told you all already, I was lucky enough to receive this award – You’ve got to be in it to win it! R.I.P. Wee Sanny

Before leaving this part of my report I must add that this year again I have been so proud of our Young Breeders. They are the envy of many breeds and, with the leadership of a few certain people, turned the cattle out at our National Show to a very high standard. And also a big thank you to the exhibitors for sending their cows along. What a great spectacle it was for everyone, well done.

At this point I would like to welcome a new member to the Breed Heritage Committee, Geraint Thomas of the Gwynogg herd in South Wales, who I am sure will bring in a valuable contribution to help us develop the breed for the future. Many thanks our retiring member Peter Berresford for all his input over the last five years.

We have recently added a number of animals to our Breed Heritage watch list, which we are very excited about and looking forward to working with their breeders in the future. We are looking for a variety of females with solid cow family history, who can offer us different bloodlines that we can work with to provide a future for our breed. I have recently travelled to Essex and Norfolk and saw many good cows and I appreciated the wonderful hospitality. I hope to travel to many more areas in the near future.

The first Ayrshire World Conference was held in Canada in 1969 with a large UK party in attendance, and to say delegates were impressed with the progress Canadian Ayrshires had made in type and yield would have been an understatement. The Canadians had developed type classification, and also the basic contemporary comparison method for yield evaluation, rather than depending on shows and individual high yields to select future breeding sires for proving schemes, and this had given their national yield a huge Jack Lawson and the late Reuben Chesire boost.

The unanimous recommendation on the delegates return was that one of their most outstanding sires. Legacy had been selected for semen from some of the leading Canadian sires should be imported, and progeny test, but the Scottish MMB proven bull selection panel deemed that was the start of Cattle Services in the semen business. Donholm the progeny conformation not good enough which upset the owners, Commander Jack’s Choice plus three Selwood sires, New Year, Royal R Dunlop & Son, Midkelton, as the production was outstanding, so Welcome and Greta’s Boy, were the first imports, and history shows Cattle Services took him on and history proved it to be a good decision. what a dramatic effect they had on the breed by not only producing Progeny of Legacy won the National Dairy Event award for the highest high yielding daughters, but also sons that would go on to be used in yielding progeny group three times in four years, and better still progeny natural service, with many being selected for progeny test and coming on many farms earned credits for lifetime production, so for long life and out with flying colours. One of the many successes for Cattle Services high production conformation was not so bad after all. Legacy recorded was Wheatrig Lena’s Commander who had a huge home use, having 2935 registered daughters and probably even more in commercial 2215 registered progeny, but also gave the company a foot in the herds.
