Year 10 Film Knowledge Booklet Term 3 Name: Class: Tsotsi (Hood, 2005): Summary Tsotsi (Presley Chweneyagae) is a petty-crime gang leader. He and his friends Boston, Aap and Butcher (Mothusi Magano, Kenneth Nkosi, Zenzo Ngqobe) rob a older man on a crowded subway then Butcher stabs him quietly and they flee once the subway is empty. Boston is sick afterwards. The gang goes to the local bar for a drink and Tsotsi mocks Boston for getting sick. Boston asks Tsosti what his real name is and a antagonizes him about what happened to him that made him this way. Boston pushes Tsotsi too far and Tsotsi hits him, pushing him to the floor. He continues the beating on the floor, hitting him numerous times in the face and kicking him in the side. Tsotsi then walks out of the bar. Tsotsi walks through the rain and makes his way towards a upper class house where a car just pulled up to the gate. A woman, Pumla (Nambitha Mpumlwana) gets out and rings the bell and speaks to someone asking him to open the gate. Tsotsi runs up, draws his gun and points it at her. He gets in the car and she tries to stop him from leaving. As Tsotsi shifts from reverse to drive he's stopped for a moment and Pumla manages to get the car door open and tries to tell him to stop but Tsotsi shoots her and drives off. Suddenly he hears a soft crying: it's a baby. He swerves and hits a sign, almost running off the road. -

After explosive cyclogenesis south of Greenland takes place while crossing a very intense upper-level jet stream, Kyrill underwent secondary cyclogenesis over the North Atlantic Ocean just west of the British Isles. The secondary cyclogenesis (Kyrill II), was located on the occlusion front of the mature cyclone (Kyrill I), which is very unusual compared to typical frontal cyclogenesis generally occurring along the trailing cold fronts of existing cyclones. The mechanisms of secondary cyclogenesis are investigated based on moderate-resolution (0.0625◦ grid spacing) RCM simulations. The formation of Kyrill II along the occlusion front follows common mechanism for secondary cyclogenesis like breaking up of a local, low tropospheric PV strip along the front and diabatic heating with associated development of a vertical extended PV tower. Kyrill II propagated further towards Europe, and its development was favoured by a split jet structure aloft the surface cyclone, which maintained the deep core pressure (around 961 - 965 hPa) for at least 36 hours. -

Film Terminology Forms of Fiction English 12 Camera SHOTS camera shot is the amount of space that is seen in one shot or frame. Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of a film's setting, characters and themes. As a result, camera shots are very important in shaping meaning in a film. Extreme long shot A framing in which the scale of the object shown is very small; a building, landscape, or crowd of people would fill the screen. Extreme long shot/Establishing shot This shot, usually involving a distant framing, that shows the spatial relations among the important figures, objects, and setting in a scene. Long Shot A framing in which the scale of the object shown is very small A standing human figure would appear nearly half the height of the screen. It is often used to show scenes of action or to establish setting - Sometimes called an establishing shot Medium long shot A framing at a distance that makes an object about four or five feet high appear to fill most of the screen vertically Medium Shot A framing in which the scale of the object shown is of moderate size A human figure seen from the waist up would fill most of the screen Over the shoulder This shot is framed from behind a person who is looking at the subject This shot helps to establish the position of each person and get the feel of looking at one person from the other’s point of view It is common to cut between these shots during conversation Medium close up A framing in which the scale of the object is fairly large a human figure seen from the chest up would fill most the screen Close-up Shot A framing in which the scale of the object shown is relatively large; most commonly a person’s head seen from the neck up, or an object of a comparable size that fills most of the screen. -

Part I: Methodology DOMINIK BÜELER AND STEPHAN PFAHL Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science, ETH Zurich,€ Zurich, Switzerland (Manuscript received 9 February 2017, in final form 31 July 2017) ABSTRACT Extratropical cyclones develop because of baroclinic instability, but their intensification is often sub- stantially amplified by diabatic processes, most importantly, latent heating (LH) through cloud formation. Although this amplification is well understood for individual cyclones, there is still need for a systematic and quantitative investigation of how LH affects cyclone intensification in different, particularly warmer and moister, climates. For this purpose, the authors introduce a simple diagnostic to quantify the contribution of LH to cyclone intensification within the potential vorticity (PV) framework. The two leading terms in the PV tendency equation, diabatic PV modification and vertical advection, are used to derive a diagnostic equation to explicitly calculate the fraction of a cyclone’s positive lower-tropospheric PV anomaly caused by LH. The strength of this anomaly is strongly coupled to cyclone intensity and the associated impacts in terms of surface weather. To evaluate the performance of the diagnostic, sensitivity simulations of 12 Northern Hemisphere cyclones with artificially modified LH are carried out with a numerical weather prediction model. Based on these simulations, it is demonstrated that the PV diagnostic captures the mean sensitivity of the cyclones’ PV structure to LH as well as parts of the strong case-to-case variability. The simple and versatile PV diagnostic will be the basis for future climatological studies of LH effects on cyclone intensification. -

Since its release, this ‘love story’–jagged, fragmentary, achronological – has inspired an overproduction of criticism focused on dream analysis. Central to such a mode of interpretation, one which separates content from form, which mines for content at the expense of considerations of form, is the distinction between those facets of the film’s narrative marked off as ‘fantasy’ and those marked off as ‘reality’. While these investigations have, in their way, been fruitful, they have also had the lamentable effect of rendering legible, reducing to a story, a work of art which, as a time-bound cinematic experience, deliberately resists the consolations of a linear narrative, amounts, in effect, to an anti-story that in its non-revelations, its silences, becomes time-less. -

Abstract “Dreams are the touchstones of our characters.” - Henry David Thoreau, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers The ubiquitous nature of dreams works to connect all humankind through its powerful presence in both our waking and sleeping life. I became curious about the unconscious after I recorded a series of dreams that I experienced last summer. After looking at this phenomena from the outside, I became invested in the narrative aspect of dreams and the personal nature the dreamer has with each dream. It then occurred to me how significant dreams are in our daily life. We experience thousands of dreams throughout our lifetime - varying constructions of our unconscious reassembled night after night. One of the remarkable things about dreams is that only the individual gets to experience them directly. There have been many cultural attempts to capture the dream experience. From the paintings of Salvador Dali to the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, dreams have been a popular catalyst for artistic creation. When film came into existence, it too tried to capture that special, esoteric quality which was seemingly exclusive to the world of the dream. -
