    GOD IS GOD IS FEBRUARY 2017 Dear Saint Mary's family, We are off to a good start for 2017. As I write this letter we are just three full weeks in to the new year and already so much is happening. We have held our first Annual Meeting together, and the response has been very posi- tive. At that meeting we were able to make amendments to the church’s By-Laws that will allow us to go forward with a smaller eight person Vestry, all of whom were elected unanimously by the members present at the meeting. At our February Vestry meeting we will vote for a Junior Warden, Treasurer, and Secretary. With that accomplished we will begin the process of looking at all of the different aspects of the way we at Saint Mary’s currently do things. The end goal of that process is to identify and eliminate any barriers to growth that might not have been considered, and to find ways to improve upon many of the things we are already doing well. To that end, please begin to pray to see if God may be calling you to participate in any of the ministries that currently exist at Saint Mary’s. This is going to be a fun and exciting time for us to bond and grow together as we seek to strengthen the teams and look at the ways they function.     Hell - Another Great Deception (Copyright ©1truth1law.com 2015) The existence of a literal place called “hell,” where sinners suffer various forms of torment forever, has been ingrained in the minds of people for centuries and, in most cases, those who hold this belief accept it without much thought or study. Religious authorities have used this doctrine to control and manipulate their adherents by instilling fear and blind obedience in them. After all, who wants to be tormented for eternity? It’s better to listen to your church’s directives than turn your back on that authority and end up in hell as a result. Although it is not always stated in exactly these terms, a religious organization can make implications to this effect and its followers will accept and believe the lie. One of the problems associated with this false teaching is that it pictures Almighty God as an unjust and cruel tyrant who seems to enjoy seeing people suffer. In reality, it is “the god of this present evil age,” who gets satisfaction from the misfortunes of others, Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil age… (Gal. 1:3-4a; NKJV used throughout unless otherwise stated; emphasis added). Lopez Copyright by jimi adams 2007 ABSTRACT Sub-Saharan Africa’s residents represent approximately two-thirds of the nearly 40 million global HIV/AIDS cases, while comprising only about one-tenth of the world’s population. In the rural settings where most inhabitants of SSA live, religious organizations are the only formal organizations present, and virtually all residents of SSA participate in a religious organization. Many have theorized a relationship between religion and HIV/AIDS, suggesting alternately its helpful and harmful potential in this crisis. The existing research conceptualizes religion, HIV risk and the connection between them by studying individuals, organizations, or aggregations of individuals and organizations. In this dissertation, I demonstrate the adjustments a network perspective contributes to researchers’ ability to understand religious organizational responses to this epidemic, the nature of HIV-risk and, perhaps most importantly, how these are linked.     The Palm: A Symbol of Hope Luke 19:28-40 I believe it was Clare Boothe Luce who said, “There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them.” A couple weeks ago, I used as an introduction for my sermon, a story about a farmer whose donkey fell into a well, and thinking that he would not be able to get the donkey out, he called his friends to help him bury the donkey alive. However, with every shovel-full of dirt they threw into the well, the donkey shook the dirt off its back and stepped on the dirt until it was out of the well. I do believe that there is no hopeless situation, not as long as God is in charge. Since God is always in charge, every situation simply becomes a matter of perspective. Today we celebrate Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday, depending on what we choose to focus on in our worship of God. The story of Palm/Passion Sunday is well-known as that time of the Christian calendar of rituals when we remember the account of Jesus’ final journey into Jerusalem for the Passover Feast, just before he was crucified. On this Palm/Passion Sunday, I wish to focus on the theme of “hope” as this morning is we reflect on where is God in this world crisis of the coronavirus. And so especially in a time when people will cleave to anything that offers the slightest glimmer thereof. Some place hope in politics and politicians, some in their mates, some in their child/ren, some in their jobs, some in their bank account, some in their intellect, some in their beauty/comeliness.

Mayhue Senior Vice President and Dean Professor of Theology and Pastoral Ministries The plethora of literature produced in the last two decades on the basic nature of hell indicates a growing debate in evangelicalism that has not been experienced since the latter half of the nineteenth century. This introductory article to the entire theme issue of TMSJ sets forth the context of the question of whether hell involves conscious torment forever in Gehenna for unbelievers or their annihilation after the final judgment. It discusses historical, philosophical, lexical, contextual, and theological issues that prove crucial to reaching a definitive biblical conclusion. In the end, hell is a conscious, personal torment forever; it is not “just for awhile” before annihilation after the final judgment (conditional immortality) nor is its final retribution “never” (universalism). * * * * * A few noted evangelicals such as Clark Pinnock,1 John Stott,2 and John Wenham3 have in recent years challenged the doctrine of eternal torment forever in hell as God’s final judgment on all unbelievers. James Hunter, in his landmark “sociological interpretation” of evangelicalism, notes that “. it is clear that there is a measurable degree of uneasiness within this generation of Evangelicals with the notion of an eternal damnation.”4 The 1989 evangelical doctrinal caucus “Evangelical Affirmations” surprisingly debated this issue. “Strong disagreements did surface over the position of annihilationism, a view that holds that unsaved souls 1Clark H. However, by the sixth century AD, so completely were their scriptures and teachings distorted that had the founder or the Prophet of any one of them returned to Earth, he would unquestionably have refused his own religion and denounced its followers as apos- tates and idolaters. Judaism had, by then, been reduced to an amalgam of dead rituals and sacraments with- out any spark of life left in it. Also, being a religion upholding a strong racial identity, it never had a message for other nations or for the good of the humanity at large. Through mysticism and magic many polytheistic ideas and customs again found their way among the people, and the Talmud confirms the fact that idolatrous worship is seductive.
