The story alternates between two timelines: the world of Michael Poole in the yearand that of Alia, a posthuman girl who lives approximately half a million years in the future. Engineer Michael Poole is recovering from the death of Morag, his pregnant wife. Poole works as a consultant designing space propulsion systems, and dreams of being able to one day explore the stars. However, there are more pressing matters; humanity faces a serious bottleneckwith the Earth reeling from the effects of anthropogenic climate change and resource depletion; automobile production has all but ceased, except for hydrogen-based mass transit, and air travel is limited to the very rich. Due to climate change, the oceans have become dead zones, with rising sea levels and severe weather displacing millions. While working in Siberia, Michael's son Tom is injured by an explosion of methane gas from previously frozen hydratessuddenly released from the now-melting tundra. Michael begins to research whether this is an isolated incident or the beginning of something more serious. With the help of an artificial sentience named Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3, he discovers that a potential release of all such frozen greenhouse gasses could destabilise the environment enough to make the Earth untenable for human habitation, in a repeat of the Permian extinction. Michael consults members of the Poole family, who come together to work on the problem. Tom, John, and the elderly George a principal character of Coalescent reunite, and a maverick geoengineering company funds the project. Michael designs a subsurface refrigeration system that could stabilise the frozen hydrates. Meanwhile, Michael continues to be haunted by visions of his dead wife, apparitions he has been seeing his entire life, even before he first met her. He becomes obsessed with discovering the origin of this phenomenon, and his quest for Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 drives a wedge between him and his family. Aunt Rosa Poole from Coalescenta Catholic priest and ex-member of the Order, helps Michael research the problem, drawing on her vast knowledge, stemming in small part from her relationship with the Coalescent hive and its historical archives. The rest of the Poole family joins the investigation when Morag appears during a trial test Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 the engineering project. This time, everyone sees Morag, even observing drones recording the event. After the project is bombed by a terrorist group, Morag goes from being an apparition to reincarnating in physical reality. This frightens everyone, even Michael. As part of a government program called the "Redemption", Alia is obligated to witness the life Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 Michael Poole, from start to finish. Pressured Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 her family to leave the ship, Alia becomes a candidate for the Transcendence, a collective group of immortal posthumans who are attempting to evolve into a form of godhoodin effect leaving their humanity behind. After travelling the galaxy and observing several posthuman life forms, Alia travels to Earth to meet the Transcendence. Alia learns the Transcendence is attempting to redeem the past suffering of all humans, first by witnessing every single one as Alia witnessed, then by living as every single human and experiencing everything that they experienced. However, since observing is not seen as Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 for redemption, the Transcendence ultimately desires to erase all suffering in the past, thereby ensuring that every human that could have existed does so. Lastly, if that is seen as too great a task, the Transcendence is prepared to reach back in time and stop humans from ever existing, thereby "erasing" the suffering that they Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 to redeem. Upset about the goals of the Transcendence, Alia makes her way Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 to the Nordonly to find that it has been attacked in an attempt to get her to go back and face the Transcendence by a group who believes the Redemption is a mistake. Upon returning to the Transcendence, Alia agrees to find a human who can join the Transcendence long enough to debate the Redemption and help them find the best course of action. To do so, Alia projects herself into the past, to the time of Michael Poole. She appears to him as his Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 wife, but changes into her true form, that of a different small, hairy primate, a form evolved for low gravity environments. Alia convinces Michael to face the Transcendence. After an initial period of adjustment Michael makes contact with the Transcendence. Able to see both sides of the argument, Michael forgives the Transcendence for their meddling, but asks that they stop their efforts. Michael is returned to his own time, where he successfully completes the refrigeration project. The Kuiper anomaly, first introduced in Coalescent Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3, disappears, and is revealed to be related to Alia's connection with Michael, having first appeared in the solar system at the time of Michael's birth. In the far future, the Transcendence collapses and the Witnessing program is shut down. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Transcendent First edition. Dewey Decimal. Worlds Without End. Destiny's Children | Penguin Random House Canada Destiny's Children is a science-fiction series by Stephen Baxter. It takes place within his larger series, the Xeelee Sequence. Like his previous Manifold Trilogythe books are not direct sequels to one another, but are instead thematically linked by the appearance of concepts, themes, and sometimes characters in multiple Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3. The Kuiper Anomaly, a tetrahedral Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 that appears in the Kuiper beltis discovered in Coalescentmentioned briefly in Exultantand finally explained in Transcendent. Each book deals in some way with the future evolution of humans, both physically and sociologically. For example, Coalescent discusses the ability of humans living with limited space and resources to evolve a society that resembles insect hives. Transcendent deals with several post-human forms that are found to have evolved to adapt planets that they colonized. The theme is present in Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 insofar as the novel deals with humanity as evolved to fight a war that has lasted tens of thousands of years. Each book further deals in some way with the existence and identity of God. For example, Exultant suggests that there was consciousness present before the Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3 began that selected this universe for its ability to sustain life. Transcendent discusses a group of humans that have transcended to a higher consciousness as becoming a Transcendent: Destinys Children Book 3, and uses established theology to attempt to dissect the Transcendent's motives. Acken and Donald W. Smith Ames Research Center Manually operated hand-held sextants are being studied at Ames Research Center to determine whether they are sufficiently accurate for midcourse navigation phases of manned space flight. Studies carried out on the ground have been extended by using the NASA CV-990 aircraft to provide sighting con- ditions closely simulating those in spacecraft and to investigate firther the measurement error due to lunar irradiance. The results of approximately 1200 measurements made during nine flights confirm results of simulator and ground- based studies which indicate that, with a hand-held sextant, an astronaut can be expected to make navigational measurements with errors having a standard deviation of approximately 210 arc seconds. A value for moon irradiance effect of approximately 25 arc seconds was established for the conditions of the experiment using a hand-held sextant. INTRODUCTION The manually operated hand-held sextant has provided marine navigators with a compact, lightweight, easily operated instrument for centuries.

Paths Not Taken—John M. Logsdon I want to ask all of you to join me for a few minutes in a men- tal experiment. There is a certain sense of determinism as we review a period of history, like the forty years of U.S. human spaceflight. There is an implicit assumption that there were no alternatives to the way things happened. If you step back even half a step, you know that’s not true; that along the way, history could have been very different if different choices had been made, if different events had happened. So I have arbitrarily picked a few situations in those forty years and invite you to ask along with me: “What if things had been different?” This notion of counterfactual history has some legitimacy. I have used it as a class assignment for my students in space policy, asking them to write about what might have occurred if different choices had been made. Dwayne Day, a former student and now a colleague, has suggested a whole symposium on counterfactual space history, and that might be an interesting thing to do someday.

  • The Limits of Communication Between Mortals and Immortals in the Homeric Hymns
Body Language: The Limits of Communication between Mortals and Immortals in the Homeric Hymns. Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Bridget Susan Buchholz, M.A. Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Sarah Iles Johnston Fritz Graf Carolina López-Ruiz Copyright by Bridget Susan Buchholz 2009 Abstract This project explores issues of communication as represented in the Homeric Hymns. Drawing on a cognitive model, which provides certain parameters and expectations for the representations of the gods, in particular, for the physical representations their bodies, I examine the anthropomorphic representation of the gods. I show how the narratives of the Homeric Hymns represent communication as based upon false assumptions between the mortals and immortals about the body. I argue that two methods are used to create and maintain the commonality between mortal bodies and immortal bodies; the allocation of skills among many gods and the transference of displays of power to tools used by the gods. However, despite these techniques, the texts represent communication based upon assumptions about the body as unsuccessful. Next, I analyze the instances in which the assumed body of the god is recognized by mortals, within a narrative. This recognition is not based upon physical attributes, but upon the spoken self identification by the god. Finally, I demonstrate how successful communication occurs, within the text, after the god has been recognized. Successful communication is represented as occurring in the presence of ritual references.

  • Natural Selection and Coalescent Theory
Natural Selection and Coalescent Theory John Wakeley Harvard University INTRODUCTION The story of population genetics begins with the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species and the tension which followed concerning the nature of inheritance. Today, workers in this field aim to understand the forces that produce and maintain genetic variation within and between species. For this we use the most direct kind of genetic data: DNA sequences, even entire genomes. Our “Great Obsession” with explaining genetic variation (Gillespie, 2004a) can be traced back to Darwin’s recognition that natural selection can occur only if individuals of a species vary, and this variation is heritable. Darwin might have been surprised that the importance of natural selection in shaping variation at the molecular level would be de-emphasized, beginning in the late 1960s, by scientists who readily accepted the fact and importance of his theory (Kimura, 1983). The motivation behind this chapter is the possible demise of this Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution, which a growing number of population geneticists feel must follow recent observations of genetic variation within and between species. One hundred fifty years after the publication of the Origin, we are struggling to fully incorporate natural selection into the modern, genealogical models of population genetics. The main goal of this chapter is to present the mathematical models that have been used to describe the effects of positive selective sweeps on genetic variation, as mediated by gene genealogies, or coalescent trees. Background material, comprised of population genetic theory and simulation results, is provided in order to facilitate an understanding of these models.
