THE PRINCIPLES, CHARISM AND MISSION OF THE HOSPITALLER ORDER OF ST JOHN OF GOD 1.1 Planning the future in terms of our principles Humanity is moving towards the 21st century filled with both fear and hope. We have made outstanding progress in understanding and managing our world, which today looks more like a huge village – the ‘global village’. Yet individual and collective suffering still persists and is becoming more acute, as a result of war, class or group selfishness, and the limitations of human nature of which we are constantly reminded the abiding presence of pain, sickness and death. The Hospitaller Order of St John of God forms part and parcel of this ‘global village’. We number 1,500 Brothers, about 40,000 Co-workers counting our employees and volunteers together, and 300,000 Co-workers-benefactors. We are present in all five continents, in 46 countries and in 21 Religious Provinces, 1 Vice-province, 6 General Delegations and 5 Provincial Delegations. We perform our apostolate on behalf of the sick, the poor and the suffering in 293 Centres. Although we are all members of one and the same body, our Order, we nevertheless live in widely differing situations. Some of us are in highly technically advanced societies and Centres, while others are living in developing societies and Centres; some live in countries that enjoy peace, while others are suffering from violence and war, or the aftermath of violence belonging to a recent past; some enjoy the benefits of a free society, but others have their freedom and their fundamental rights severely curtailed; some of us are devoted specifically to hospitaller work, while others are more concerned with social issues and marginalization; some are trying to help people to live, while the mission of others is to help them to die with dignity. Although all of us are working with the aim of providing comprehensive, holistic care, some concentrate more on physical health, others on mental health, and others still are helping to create the conditions to enable people to enjoy decent living standards. Some live in the North, others in the South, some in the cultures of the East and others in the West. (1) As we embark upon the third millennium of our era, men and women throughout the world are wondering about the future of our society, our institutions, and indeed our own future. All of us who are making it possible for the Hospitaller Order of St John of God to continue working throughout the 3 world are also planning a future which will be capable of building in the coming millennium at the service of those who suffer or are in need, and are seeking help to rebuild their own personal life project. Sometimes, when planning the future we may fall into the error of ignoring the past, not intentionally but simply due to negligence, or because we fail to give it due consideration, or because we are anxious to keep up with the times. On other occasions, the need for radical renewal and to redress failures makes it necessary for us to set aside approaches that have served us in the past but are no longer relevant, because the times now demand new responses and the past must be shed like ballast, leaving us with greater freedom to build up the future. We have to plan our future here and now, drawing on everything that is positive from our past. We believe that this is the situation facing the Hospitaller Order today, intent as it is on planning its future based on an updated review of its principles and its values. There are probably some areas in the Order and certain ways of doing things which will have to be changed, and in some places this change may have to be much more radical than in others if we intend to be present in the next millennium, offering people a service and handing them a message that is still relevant. There can therefore be no doubt that the whole Hospitaller Order of St John of God must necessarily be underpinned by the same values that have always characterized our Institution. These values must be inculturated, updated in terms of the language in which they are expressed, and practised in accordance with the situations that exist in different parts of the world, for this is the only way in which all those who come into contact with our Centres can come to know and accept them. General Statute no. 43 lays down the following principles: (2) ‘As a consequence of their Catholic identity, the fundamental guiding principles which characterize the care given in our centres are as follows: the focus of the attention of all who live and work in our hospitals or other centres must be the person for whom we are caring; the rights of people who are sick or in need must be upheld and defended, taking into account their personal dignity; we are committed to the defence and improvement of human life; we acknowledge the right of the person in our care to be duly informed of his/her state of health; we fulfil the requirements of professional confidentiality, making sure that they are respected by all those who come in contact with the people in our care; 4 we uphold the right to die with dignity, respecting and giving attention to the rightful wishes and spiritual needs of the dying, in the awareness that human life is limited in time and is called to fullness in Christ; we respect the freedom of conscience of those for whom we care and those who work for us, while insisting that the identity of our hospitaller centres be accepted and respected; we enhance and promote the qualities and professionalism of our co- workers, encouraging them to participate actively in the apostolic mission of the Order; in keeping with their skills and areas of responsibility we include them in the decision making process in our apostolic works; we reject the pursuit of material gain; thus we observe just economic norms and demand that these be respected. We view our Co-Workers as the most important ‘assets’ that Order has to be able to carry through its mission effectively. This is why in all our relations with them, we strive to practise and promote the principles of social justice, out of a desire to share our charism with all those who are inspired by the spirit of St John of God. Provided that they respect our principles, we are willing and ready to cooperate with any agency or organizations, ecclesiastical and secular, in the performance and scope of our mission, concerning ourselves more particularly with areas that are most neglected. (3) These principles have their roots in our Founder, and they have taken shape over the years backed by the reflection and the good done by his successors. Bearing our tradition in mind, we must also reflect on the definition of the mission of the Hospitaller Order. In everything he did, St John of God’s one desire was ‘do good, and to do it well; not to provide lifeless assistance, neglecting its quality, but combining the sense of Christian charity and justice in order to offer the sick and the needy an efficient service of a high scientific and technical standard’. (4) 1.2 The Charism of the Order St John of God was a charismatic man: the way he acted attracted the attention of everyone who knew him, and his influence spread well beyond Granada into the villages and towns of Andalusia and Castile. His ‘charism’ and his ‘charisma’ transcended the man himself. And it was not just his humane attitudes and actions that expressed his love for the sick and needy which aroused everyone’s admiration and inspired them to cooperate in his work. Theologically speaking, a Charism is any form of presence of the Spirit which enriches believers and enables them to serve others. Brothers are consecrated to 5 practise a specific Charism which is a gift they have received from the Spirit, by cultivating the grace they receive, living their lives in a relationship with God, and reaching out to and serving Humanity. The Charism and hospitality with which St John of God was enriched by the Holy Spirit was embodied in him as a seed which was to remain alive in men and women throughout time, extending the merciful presence of Jesus of Nazareth and serving all those who suffer in the manner of St John of God. The Constitutions of our Order define the Charism in the following terms: ‘In virtue of this gift, we are consecrated by the action of the Holy Spirit, which makes us participate in a special way in the Father’s merciful love. This experience communicates to us attitudes of loving-kindness and self-giving, enables us to carry out the mission of proclaiming and bringing about the Kingdom among the poor and the sick, transforms our existence, and results in our lives manifesting the Father’s special love for the weakest, whom we try to save after the example of Jesus.’ (5) The Brother consecrates himself and lives in communion with others who have felt the same call to express the same charism. But love within this community (communion) has to be expressed outwards, because of the demands of a mission which sets out to provide liberating aid to other members of the Church and to needy people in general.

    TO THE WHOLE ORDER. Bogota, October 10th. 2007 Prot No PG100/2007 My dear Brothers and Co-workers, 1 Preamble. It is just a year since we celebrated the 66th General Chapter of the Order with the title or theme of “Passion for the Hospitality of Saint John of God in the world of today.” I wanted to share with you a short reflection on what life has been like for us at the level of the General Government over that period of time, some of the things that have occurred and events that we have been involved in other than the Provincial Chapters, although obviously the Chapters took up most of our time over a seven month period. I want also to take this opportunity to give a brief overview of the Order, as I see it, having had the opportunity to preside at all of the Provincial Chapters. 1.1 God of Surprises. But first of all I would like to state something related to our election to the General Government of the Order and related matters. I recall a book that I read some years ago entitled, God of Surprises in which the author describes his own conversion from a harsh to a true image of God, one of God who is gentle and compassionate. I can safely say that God certainly surprised all of us when we were elected to serve on the General 1 Government of the Order towards the end of the General Chapter of October 2006! In my own case, while very much aware of my unworthiness and many limitations, I see my election as Prior General, as a privilege beyond words to express, which fills me with awe, wonder and I have to say at times apprehension when I think of what is expected of me and the office which I hold.

The Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe, which ends the liturgical year, has been gladdened this morning by the canonization of 12 new saints: 10 religious, one born in Argentina, who were martyred in Spain in the 1930s; St Benedict Menni, a priest of the Hospitallers of St John of God, of Italian origin but who also worked in Spain where he founded the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus; and St Thomas of Cori, a priest of the Order of Friars Minor. As I cordially greet the pilgrims who have come for this joyful event, I invite everyone to praise the Lord for the great work he has accomplished in these Gospel witnesses. I urge them in particular to contemplate the fervent devotion they had to the Mother of the Redeemer, on the day when we recall her presentation in the temple. 2. The presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most beloved feasts of the Eastern tradition, which has also been celebrated in the West since the 14th century. Mary appears to us today as the temple in which God has placed his salvation and as the handmaid who was totally consecrated to the Lord. Each year on this day the Ecclesial Community throughout the world remembers cloistered nuns, who have embraced a totally contemplative life and live on what Providence provides for them through the generosity of the faithful. As I remind everyone of their duty not to let these consecrated sisters want for spiritual and material support, I extend my warm greeting and thanks to them.

Today we meet again to renew our hymn of praise and thanksgiving to God the day after yesterday's solemn liturgy in the Vatican Basilica during which I had the joy of canonizing 12 new saints, steadfast witnesses to Christ, the King of the Universe. At the same time, let us reflect once again on their shining example of unconditional love for God and of generous devotion to the spiritual and material good of their brethren. 2. With great affection I greet the Spanish-speaking pilgrims who have come to Rome. On this occasion I extend a special greeting to the Brothers of the Christian Schools, accompanied by their students and alumni, the Passionist Fathers, as well as the members of the great Hospitaller family. These saints, beloved sons of the Church and faithful witnesses to the risen Lord, offer us the testimony of their rich spirituality, forged in daily faithfulness and unconditional self-giving to their vocation of service to neighbour. 3. The martyred Brothers of the Christian Schools canonized yesterday, followers of the charism of St John Baptist de La Salle, were totally dedicated to the complete education of children and young people. They belong to a long series of Christian educators who devoted their lives and energies to teaching in Catholic schools, committed to this indispensable service that the Church offers society. In our day the latter is sometimes individualistic and is tempted to secularism.

"He will sit on his glorious throne" (Mt 25: 31). Today's liturgical solemnity is dominated by Christ the King of the universe, Pantocrator, as we see him shining resplendently in the apse of ancient Christian basilicas. We contemplate this majestic image today, the last Sunday of the liturgical year. The kingship of Jesus Christ, according to the world's criteria, is paradoxical: it is the triumph of love, accomplished in the mystery of the Incarnation, Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Son of God. This saving kingship is fully revealed in the sacrifice of the Cross, the supreme act of mercy in which the salvation and judgement of the world are simultaneously brought about. Every Christian shares in Christ's kingship. In Baptism he receives by grace the inner drive to make his life a free and generous gift to God and his brethren. This appears most eloquently in the witness of the saints, who are models of humanity renewed by divine love. Today we joyfully enrol among them Cirilo Bertrán and his eight companions, Inocencio de la Inmaculada, Benedict Menni and Thomas of Cori. 2. "Christ must reign", we heard St Paul say in the second reading. The reign of Christ is already being established on earth through service of neighbour, by fighting against evil, suffering and human misery until death is defeated.

    The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.

Giménez-Roldán Neurology department, Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón, Madrid, Spain. ABSTRACT Introduction. In the latter half of the 19th century, asylums, colonies, and dedicated hospitals were built for the care of patients with epilepsy. In Spain, an asylum-institution was built for this purpose in 1899 in the rural setting of Carabanchel, not far from Madrid. Until now, limited data have been available on the medical care provided there. Methods. José Álvarez Sierra’ s 1952 book on the hospitals of Madrid and the book published in 2000 by the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God to commemorate the centenary of the centre’ s foundation are fundamental references. Data on historical figures and events and the development of the hospital over time were obtained from secondary sources. Results. The Marquess of Vallejo financed the creation of the institute-asylum for epileptics in memory of his son, a lawyer, who had epilepsy. He died unexpectedly at the age of 24 years during night-time sleep following a generalised seizure, an early observation of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Even before the hospital was completed, its facilities were made available to convalescent soldiers sent home from Cuba. The Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God attended to patients’ basic needs, providing instruction and occupational therapy. Based on their careers, the physicians responsible for medical care had little interest in epilepsy. In the 1970s and 1980s, Dr Díez Cuervo and a group of collaborators endeavoured to transform the old hospital into a reference centre for epilepsy.

Sisters, brothers, users, collaborators and residents of the town jointly ce- lebrated the closing of the centenary of the death of St Benedict Menni. 1 CONTIGO Wednesday, 22 April The welcome ceremony for the pilgrims was held on 22 April in the function room of our mother house, where the Mayoress of Ciempo- zuelos, María Ángeles Herrera, together with the Provincial Superiors, María Rosario Iranzo, a Sister Hospitaller, and José Antonio Soria, a Bro- ther of St John of God, welcomed all the atten- dees. In her speech, María Ángeles Herrera highligh- ted how proud everyone in Ciempozuelos is of St Benedict Menni for his dedication to the mu- Provincial Superiors with the Mayoress of Ciempozuelos nicipality and for his legacy. That is why he was named the town’s co-patron saint and adopted son in 2008 and the Council recognised Ciem- pozuelos as a Hospitaller Town in 2009. The event ended with a concert of various mu- sical styles, in which the Ciempozuelos music band, performed internationally well-known co- vers.

By celebrating the Centenary year we all have before our eyes the personality and the work of this saint of Hospitality who succeeded in welcoming in and embodying the Samaritan love of God, and making that love present in the lives of so many people stricken by sickness, suffering and poverty. The example of his life enlightens us and encourages us to continue along the pathways of reaching to welcome people in, and of practising hospitality,1 following the example of Jesus our Master who passed through the world doing good and healing the sick (cf. Acts 10,38). This year, under the motto “ST BENEDICT MENNI: A HEART WITHOUT BORDERS”, will provide us all with a very special opportunity to become more intimately familiar with this great Hospitaller, who, driven by “a love that knows no borders, was unable to say ‘enough!’“,2 and devoted himself tirelessly to lovingly serve the sick and needy, in whom he unveiled the presence of Jesus who considers all we do to our fellow men and women as being done to Him: “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” (Mt 25,40).
