APRIL 2020 ® DAILY PRAYER FOR TODAY’S CATHOLIC Canticle of Zechariah (Benedictus) Luke 1:68-79 lessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; Bhe has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Ælred Senna .................................. 452 An Easter Pilgrimage Paula Huston ost of what I knew about the Holy Land had come Mstraight out of Lutheran Sunday school: flannel- board Hebrew shepherds in striped bathrobes and sandals, Hurlbut’s lavishly illustrated Story of the Bible, with its images of white sheep on green hills, white clouds in blue skies, quaint boats rocking beside reedy shorelines. Even as an adult, I clung to the image of Israel as a kind of uninhabited parkland, empty except for Jesus and his simple followers. But now I was here, and nothing looked like I imagined it would. All around me, modern Jerusalem washed up against the 400-year-old Turkish battlements of the Old City like a furious tide: air brakes, horns, diesel fumes. Exhausted from the long flight and intensive grilling at the airport in Tel Aviv—I was a foreign woman, traveling alone, automatically suspect—I stood with my pack at my feet, shocked at the size of the crowds pouring out of the Damascus Gate and trying to adjust my expectations. By 8:00 the next morning, I was already at the Holy Sepulchre. It was the holiest week of the year, and I stood watching as old Greek peasant women in their black head scarves and long skirts hobbled toward the massive open doors of the Crusader-built church. Behind them came priests and nuns of all ethnicities: hooded Armenians, shrouded Abyssinians, diminutive Sri Lankans swathed in black. The huge courtyard kept filling up and emptying as the pilgrim river flowed in beneath the arches. 5 6 Then the bells began to toll: deep, harsh, earthshaking bells that slammed into my chest and set my nerves to jangling. I staggered inside the huge stone building while the bells went on and on, and people came surging in around me. There, with loud cries, they fell down on their hands and knees to kiss the great beige slab of stone. Glistening with holy water, it is the place where legend says Christ’s lacerated body lay to be anointed. I found myself crouching too, putting out a shivering hand to touch the wet surface. Then I joined the massive throng pressed together in front of the Chapel of the Angel. Kneeling for a few moments in the Tomb itself proved too much for me. I couldn’t sleep or eat or stop weeping for several days. My idyllic illusions about Jesus had been torn away, and I didn’t know where to turn next. But as it turned out, my Holy Week breakdown was actually a gift. Without that difficult pilgrimage, I might never have realized that my childish faith was not robust enough to carry me through what lay ahead. I needed to become a grown-up Christian.

    St. Agnes of Montepulciano Feast Day: April 20 Born: January 28, 1268 Died: April 20, 1317 Canonized: 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII Patron: Agnes de Segni was born in 1268 near Montepulciano, Italy to a wealthy family. At age 6, she announced she would consecrate her life to God. She continuously begged her parents to let her enter a convent. While passing a house of ill repute, crows flew from the brothel and attacked Agnes. The people with her saw this as a sign that demons were angry at Agnes who was so holy and would do great things for the glory of God. They prophetically postured that one day Agnes would convert those in the house from their licentious lifestyle. At age 9, she was allowed to join the Franciscan order for women, trading her fine linen for primitive clothes. Agnes was devoted to the Blessed Sacrament, fasted and was seen levitating in prayer. She had a vision of the Blessed Mother holding the Child Jesus who carried a small gold cross on a chain. Agnes was permitted to hold and embrace the Holy Infant. When the visitation was over, Agnes was left holding the small gold cross on the chain. In another vision, the Blessed Mother gave Agnes 3 stones upon which to build a convent. At age 14, Agnes became in charge of finances. A year later, she was transferred to help establish a new Franciscan convent in Proceno. Upon its completion, she was made abbess. Because she was so young, she needed special dispensation from the bishop.

    TO THE WHOLE ORDER. Bogota, October 10th. 2007 Prot No PG100/2007 My dear Brothers and Co-workers, 1 Preamble. It is just a year since we celebrated the 66th General Chapter of the Order with the title or theme of “Passion for the Hospitality of Saint John of God in the world of today.” I wanted to share with you a short reflection on what life has been like for us at the level of the General Government over that period of time, some of the things that have occurred and events that we have been involved in other than the Provincial Chapters, although obviously the Chapters took up most of our time over a seven month period. I want also to take this opportunity to give a brief overview of the Order, as I see it, having had the opportunity to preside at all of the Provincial Chapters. 1.1 God of Surprises. But first of all I would like to state something related to our election to the General Government of the Order and related matters. I recall a book that I read some years ago entitled, God of Surprises in which the author describes his own conversion from a harsh to a true image of God, one of God who is gentle and compassionate. I can safely say that God certainly surprised all of us when we were elected to serve on the General 1 Government of the Order towards the end of the General Chapter of October 2006! In my own case, while very much aware of my unworthiness and many limitations, I see my election as Prior General, as a privilege beyond words to express, which fills me with awe, wonder and I have to say at times apprehension when I think of what is expected of me and the office which I hold.

The Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe, which ends the liturgical year, has been gladdened this morning by the canonization of 12 new saints: 10 religious, one born in Argentina, who were martyred in Spain in the 1930s; St Benedict Menni, a priest of the Hospitallers of St John of God, of Italian origin but who also worked in Spain where he founded the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus; and St Thomas of Cori, a priest of the Order of Friars Minor. As I cordially greet the pilgrims who have come for this joyful event, I invite everyone to praise the Lord for the great work he has accomplished in these Gospel witnesses. I urge them in particular to contemplate the fervent devotion they had to the Mother of the Redeemer, on the day when we recall her presentation in the temple. 2. The presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most beloved feasts of the Eastern tradition, which has also been celebrated in the West since the 14th century. Mary appears to us today as the temple in which God has placed his salvation and as the handmaid who was totally consecrated to the Lord. Each year on this day the Ecclesial Community throughout the world remembers cloistered nuns, who have embraced a totally contemplative life and live on what Providence provides for them through the generosity of the faithful. As I remind everyone of their duty not to let these consecrated sisters want for spiritual and material support, I extend my warm greeting and thanks to them.

The rough cloth scapular she is wearing gives grace to her movements, despite the simplicity of the fabric. She goes through the supplies and arranges the baskets containing dried vegetables, braids of garlic and onions, bundles of candles tied with string, and jars of olives. She is only fourteen years old, but the Mother Superior trusts her so much that she entrusts the dispensary to her. She prays in a low voice and the chanting of the prayer sounds like a melody. Suddenly she stops and turns around: she has felt a presence. Blinded by the light she sees, she falls to her knees. And out of the golden halo comes the diaphanous figure of the Virgin Mary. She smiles and speaks to the young woman in a calm voice. She gives her three stones and explains that before she dies she must build a monastery dedicated to her, founding the building on the indivisible Trinity. The Virgin disappears and the young woman remains prostrate for a long time, holding the three stones in her hand. She looks at them and puts them in the alms bag, tied to the long rope around her waist. From that moment on, she lived her life in the light of that apparition. The young woman was Agnese Segni, born into a wealthy family on January 28, 1268 in Gracciano, a small village near Montepulciano.
