What a privilege to have so many visitors among us! Speaking of the two Christian essentials – the Bible and prayer – the apostle Paul tells us:

‘Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.’ (Colossians 4.5)

It will be good for each of us to have some words prepared about how we came to faith in Jesus Christ, so we can share life- changing good news with those who are among us. Do also think about whom you could invite to Hymns and Pimms at 6.30 pm in St Mary’s on 6th July.

Life-changing good news is why we are here. I keep hearing encouraging stories about what a blessing Alpha has been to so many, and God has clearly been at work by his Holy Spirit. Whenever the Bible is read and explained, his voice is heard. During July, it might well be that you are thinking about some holiday reading. May I commend the summer as a good time to review your Bible-reading? There is help available: many people find Explore, published by the Good Book Company, to be just what they need. More details can be found at this website - http://www.thegoodbook.co.uk/bible/daily-bible-reading/explore.

Following a vestry meeting on 17th July, it is fabulous that we have a full complement of churchwardens: Bev Playle and Carol Hirst at St Mary’s, and Margaret Kenworthy and Joan Oldfield at St George’s. I am delighted to be working alongside them as partners in the gospel. Their specific functions, according to the Canons, are to ‘use their best endeavours by example and precept to encourage the parishioners in the practice of true religion and to promote unity and peace among them’, and to ‘maintain order and decency in the church and churchyard, especially during the time of divine service’. Essentially, their distinctive ministry is to ensure an environment in which the Bible can be clearly taught and God’s voice clearly heard. That is what their sticks are for! We may hope that their use will remain purely symbolic.

Liam Beadle 1 Share Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love, Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console, To be understood, as to understand, To be loved, as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Mother’s Advice

Sometimes when a light goes out of our life and we are left in darkness and do not know which way to go, we must put our hand into the hand of God and ask him to lead us ……. And if we let our life become a prayer until we are strong enough to stand under the weight of our own thoughts again, somehow even the most difficult hours are bearable.

Contributed by Beryl Smith in memory of her mother

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

The Community Group are hoping to arrange an eclectic evening of music, but there will also be poetry, humorous stories/jokes etc. This will probably be in early October. Christmas Street Market

I know we’re only half-way through the year but December will be here before we know it, so it’s time to start thinking about the Street Market which is on Saturday 6th December. St Mary’s is always well represented on the street with many stalls which, as well as raising money for the church, gives us the opportunity to speak to friends old and new from around the village.

If you would like to run a stall at this year’s Street Market, please could you sign up on the list at the back of church. We need to know how many St Mary’s people want stalls before we can start offering space to people from outside the church, so to enable us to do this, please sign up before 31st July. Thank you. At the May branch meeting, members and friends were pleased to welcome Elaine Swinhoe, Faith and Policy Advisor for Wakefield Diocese Mothers Union. She gave a very interesting insight in to the ways in which locally, nationally and internationally, MU members put the MU aims and objectives into practice. Food for thought indeed and lots of really good examples of prayer and action which turns “Fear and Panic” into “Faith and Policy”.

Following the July lunch outing, the next branch meeting will be on Wednesday 6th August at 7.30 pm in church, when we look forward to welcoming Cynthia Osborne, Wakefield President, who will speak about the way in which MU is moving forward into the new Diocese. It would be lovely to see as many members as possible there on the night.

The Mary Sumner Day Service is being held at Minster on Saturday 9th August 2014 at 3.00 pm, followed by afternoon tea at a cost of £2.50. Everyone is invited from our Diocese, however If you do want to attend, please contact Cynthia Osborne before Friday 25th July, (email [email protected], phone 01484 512808), stating if you want to order afternoon tea.

Subscriptions for Families First magazine are now being taken. This is the official magazine for the Mothers Union and is available to buy in newsagents. MU members can subscribe for £10.50 per year (non members £16.50) and receive 6 issues delivered directly to you in the post. Please send your name and remittance to Alison Dean.

The branch is holding it’s annual fundraising coffee morning on Thursday 21st August in the Parish Room. Please do save the date and support this event if you can - there will be cakes, a raffle, card stall, jigsaws, nearly new clothes rail etc. The funds this year are going to the Wheels Appeal - a MU project to enable co- ordinators to travel more safely and easily to remote areas to carry out project work. Lord of Life, we ask for your blessing on all involved in the organisation of the ‘Grand Départ’ in Yorkshire this summer.

Help us to seize the opportunity it offers to show hospitality, love and friendship to all and especially to the competing cyclists and spectators.

As we use the event to promote our Wheels Appeal and Mothers’ Union worldwide, make us ever mindful of the watching world.

All we do is done to your glory and by your grace - may our actions express your love for everyone and our hospitality reflect your generosity to us.

In you name we pray. Amen

This year’s Neilley Races (a huge race meeting at New Mill Road with children from many schools in the area) are now over and we’ve had fantastic performances from all our children, we are very proud of them! Those deserving a special mention are: Hermione Booth who finished 4th in the Year 3/4 girls’ race, Zara Tyas came 3rd in the Year 5/6 girls’ race and Matthew Brooke who finished 6th in the Year 5/6 boys’ race.

We have a group of boys who have been going to Honley Cricket Club to play in the Cricket Tournament, well done to them all and to Mrs Marshall as they have won the Area Final and are now through to the School Games.

In school we have been preparing for the Tour de France. All children were asked to create a material cog to stick on a parachute that will be displayed on the hills of Holme Moss. In Art Club children have been making a piece of art based on bike cogs too. Movement group have been working hard to make some bunting celebrating the Tour de France, which is hanging in school.

Our school choir sang with other schools at the Town Hall in June and received a standing ovation. Christopher Martin sang a beautiful solo.

Year 3 have visited Danelaw – A Viking Village and took part in activities that real Vikings would have done. ‘I had a really good time; my favourite part was when the lord was shouting at a guards,’ said Zain (class 3J). They also went to visit the Sikh temple. ‘The food was really nice, we had an exciting time there,’ said Ella (class 3H).

Class 3J did a family assembly about the Vikings, there were lots of funny parts as well as lots of interesting facts. Class 5H led an assembly and we found out lots of new facts about rivers, water and the Water Cycle. The parents who came wrote some lovely comments for our ‘Words of Wonder’ book too.

11 BROCKHOLES NEWS AD Report

The final session for this year and the sun shone – so outdoor activities. We had a chocolate football treasure hunt in the church grounds and, at the end of the evening, sat round a campfire eating portions of chips. Indoors we had considered achievement with particular emphasis on cycling – a small bike with stabilisers, a standard adult bike with all the accessories and then focus on the pinnacle Tour de France. At all these stages you need to show bravery, commitment, perseverance etc. The children decorated the back of church with bicycles and incorporated thoughts about being ‘brave’, committed etc.

Sue showed us some of the fantastic felt work she had being doing through local schools and the beautiful wall hangings that had been made. These will be displayed at Holme Village (inside the Yorkshire Yurt) so don’t miss it over the Tour de France period.

AD should start again on the second Thursday of September. Children aged 8 to 12 are welcome, plus rising 8s who have a sibling already attending AD.

The Leaders have enjoyed the past 10 months and wish all the young people a great summer. A D Leaders

12 OTHER ITEMS Alpha – Omega Bible Reading

Readers wanted! A rather interesting event is taking place at St Mary’s Church, Gomersal. They are reading aloud the Bible from beginning to end, started off by Bishop Nick on Sunday 14 September at 11.00 am and continuing with 335 more participants, non-stop, until Wednesday 17 September at 11.00 pm. People are invited to take part in this event and will be asked to read for 15 minutes. There will be 336 slots of 15 minutes, through day and night! If someone wishes to take part, s/he will be asked to take responsibility for one hour, so they will need to find three people who are willing to go along too, to fill up that hour. Every participant will receive a named certificate showing which 15 minutes s/he read. The Living Bible will be used for the readings.

The purpose of the event is to promote the Bible, for people to handle it, read it, sense it – this Holy Book which is in so many households but often remains unopened. If you would like to take part in the readings, please contact Trees Fewster by email - [email protected] or by ‘phone - 01274 873485. People are also welcome to drop in at any time to spend some time listening. St Mary’s is on Spen Lane, Gomersal, BD19 4HS.

Jane Wardman Warning - Bogus Caller Burglaries

A warning is circulating to beware of bogus caller burglaries, which are happening in West Yorkshire. A man will go to a property claiming a problem with the water and then accompany the resident to their kitchen and turn on taps to check flow. Whilst all this is going on a second person enters unseen and goes through the property, the Police have seen homes where several thousands of pounds in cash has been stolen along with treasured jewellery. The message is - do not let anyone in to your house you do not know or expect, whatever their excuse.

Leeds Festival

If you or someone you know is visiting Leeds Festival over the August Bank Holiday, you may be interested to know about ‘Festival Angels’ - a Christian presence at Bramham Park from Wednesday to Monday.

Since 2010 Churches in Thorner and across Leeds have set up a Prayer Tent at Leeds Festival, started by the vision of local Methodist Kate and now led by the local vicar, Andy Nicholson. Last year they added a new name, ‘Festival Angels’ to make the link between what was happening at the Festival and the Street and Club Angels work that many volunteers are involved in towns and cities throughout the year.

Volunteers are drawn from a variety of churches (including Anglicans, Methodists, Baptists, United Reformed, Catholic and Pentecostal), Street Angels and Club Angels from across the region, youth leaders and students from Leeds University Christian Union.

They aim to offer a friendly face, cheerful help, a safe place for drinks, a Christian presence for prayer and volunteers tour the site to help with practical issues to enable all to experience a safe and enjoyable time. They also run Lost Property, and aim to reunite festival goers with their lost valuables such as purse, phones, bags, and sleeping bags!

The prayer tent runs 24 hours a day selling teas and coffees and inviting festival-goers to write their prayers on post-it notes to be displayed across the tent. Many of the prayers last year spoke of heart-ache, loss, hopes for the future and concern for loved ones.

One volunteer, Mark Tiddy, said, "As I recovered from my lack of sleep over the weekend, I was blown away by how a prayer tent in the midst of a festival somehow created the most authentic church I have ever experienced." Diocesan Bulletin 15 Artweek
