A note from the Vicar - November 2015

November rhymes with ‘remember’. It’s a coincidence, of course, but in this case a rather good one, because in November we do a lot of remembering. Perhaps the most obvious occasion is bonfire night – ‘Remember, remember, 5th November’. The reason we remember the date is to remember God’s faithfulness to our country and its established Church in the defeat of conspiracy. And of course it can be lots of fun.

But Gunpowder Treason is not the only thing we remember in November. The month kicks off with the festival of All Saints, when we remember the faithful people of God of past generations. Our focus tends to be on the heroes of the faith, people like Mary the virgin God-Bearer and George the Martyr, but we also remember the saints who have touched our lives and give thanks for them. There is an opportunity to remember those who have died at a service at St George’s on 31st October at 6 p.m.

8th November is Remembrance Sunday, when we remember the horrors of war and pray for the peace of the world. The observance of Remembrance Sunday seems to be becoming increasingly popular. It is an important opportunity to share the gospel with people who rarely, if ever, come to church on other occasions. Ours is a gospel of peace – peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and peace for the world when Jesus returns as judge and the kingdoms of this world become the kingdom of our God and of his Christ.

At the heart of Christian worship – of Christian life – is an act of remembrance: at the Lord’s Supper we share bread and wine to proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Fed by faith with the Lord’s body and blood, we are equipped for service in the world, to be outposts of the reign of God in our workplaces, families and communities. May God’s kingdom come.

There was a good attendance at the October meeting which opened with a tribute and reflection on the life of our friend Pat Green who had sadly passed away since our last meeting. Pat was a stalwart of the Mothers’ Union at local Branch, Deanery and Diocesan level and she will be sorely missed for her unswerving passion, dedication and loyal work for MU.

Our speaker, Elizabeth Jones then gave an insight into the horrendous work and life pressures which resulted in a personal breakdown and how her faith had helped and is helping her through her recovery. The audience were fully appreciative of the frank and open manner in which Elizabeth shared her insight and experiences and our heartfelt thanks were given to her for sharing this with us.

Forthcoming events Wednesday 4 November 7.30 pm (St Mary’s) Speaker from - ‘Hand to Mouth Puppets’ ‘Hand to Mouth’ are a small Christian charity based in Huddersfield. Our aim is to share the good news of God's love with children throughout and beyond. They work mainly in Primary Schools and lead assemblies and collective worship with puppets. These cover a variety of PSHCE topics such as bullying and aiming higher. They also work with classes and groups of children using 'Godly Play', 'The Amazing Journey' and 'Exploring Christianity through the arts'.

Christmas Party This will be held on Wednesday 2nd December in church. There will be a faith supper followed by musical entertainment from the Honley Music Group. If you have not already done so, please see Joan Coates to sign up to the supper list. On the same day, the Diocesan Advent Service will take place on at 1.30 pm in Halifax Minster.

An update on the Emergency Toiletry Bags for Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Royal Hospital – the Branch has now donated 200 packs. Well done and thank you for all your donations.

Update from Honley CE (VC) Junior School

Honley Juniors has had a brilliant start to the new school year! We have three new teaching assistants; Mrs Goggin, Mrs Roebuck and Mrs Newton and two new teachers; Miss Tombleson in Year 3 and Mr Sunderland in Year 5. We have already celebrated lots of achievements by our pupils in our Person of the Moment and Special Mentions assembly too.

The Year 3s and 4s have been on educational visits. Year 3 have been to Bagshaw Museum to learn about Ancient Egypt and our Year 4s went to Dewa Roman experience to enhance their understanding of Roman life as part of their main topic this half term.

We have at least 14 clubs running so far this term, many of which are sports clubs. This is because at the end of last year Miss Hinchliffe, our PE lead teacher, carried out a survey to see which clubs we had enjoyed the most and if there were any new ones we would like. There were a lot of requests for gymnastics and survival clubs so Miss Hinchliffe has organised these to take place. We have lots of sporty pupils who are really enjoying the new activities.

‘Outstanding’ result from Inspection Towards the end of the last academic year we were inspected as an Anglican Church School and we are delighted to share with you that they were thrilled with the Christian ethos of our school and awarded us the highest grade of ‘outstanding’.

Strengths:  distinctiveness and effectiveness of Honley Junior as a Church of school are outstanding.  Inspired leadership of the head teacher and senior leaders promote strong teamwork  strong and explicit Christian character of the school nurtures commitment, children’s exemplary behaviour and excellent relationships at all levels  outstanding personal development of children is fostered through strong partnerships with the local church of St Mary’s and the local community  Christian character and values of the school impact significantly on the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of learners.

Areas to improve  further opportunities for spiritual development and enrichment of worship through the utilisation of the superb outside spaces for collective worship and reflection  Develop children’s understanding of Christianity as a multi-cultural world faith, through learning about Christians in other countries

During the summer term we had a Visioning Evening for our whole school community to offer their ideas about how to make our school even better and as part of this we decided on which values we wanted for our school to live by. The most popular ones were; respect, friendship, fun and forgiveness, peace, responsibility, resilience and last but not least, honesty. We are all working hard now to demonstrate these Golden Values in all that we do.
