In both China and Chinese diasporic communities around the world, education is of utmost importance and is central to childrearing in the family. In this paper, we address one of the most serious resettlement issues that new Chinese immigrants face—children’s education. We examine how receiving contexts matter for parenting, what immigrant parents do to promote their children’s education, and what enables parenting strategies to yield expected outcomes. Our analysis is based mainly on data collected from face-to-face interviews and participant observations in Chinese immigrant communities in Los Angeles and New York in the United States and in Singapore. We find that, despite different contexts of reception, new Chinese immigrant parents hold similar views and expectations on children’s education, are equally concerned about achievement outcomes, and tend to adopt overbearing parenting strategies. We also find that, while the Chinese way of parenting is severely contested in the processes of migration and adaptation, the success in promoting children’s educational excellence involves not only the right set of culturally specific strategies but also tangible support from host-society institutions and familial and ethnic social networks. -

What are the social settings that determine whether a mixed language, a pidgin, or a Creole will develop, and how can we under- stand the ways in which different languages contribute to the new grammar? Through the study of Malay contact varieties such as Baba and Bazaar Malay, Cocos Malay, and Sri Lanka Malay, as well as the Asian Portuguese ver- nacular of Macau, and China Coast Pidgin, the book explores the social and structural dynamics that underlie the fascinating phenomenon of the creation of new, or restructured, grammars. It emphasizes the importance and inter- play of historical documentation, socio-cultural observation, and linguistic analysis in the study of contact languages, offering an evolutionary frame- work for the study of contact language formation – including pidgins and Creoles – in which historical, socio-cultural, and typological observations come together. umberto ansaldo is Associate Professor in Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong. He was formerly a senior researcher and lecturer with the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication at the University of Amsterdam. From the days of Sri Vijaya, the language spoken by the people living alongside the Straits of Malacca, the Straits of Singapore and the great rivers of Sumatra have been the major language of trade all over the archipelago. Because it is a language of trade, the Malay language has always shown great adaptability to changing conditions. It remains so today. Although the English language is now the international language of trade, the Malay language will always remain an important language of trade in the region, especially in communication with our Malaysian, Indonesian and Bruneian neighbours. In this respect, the historical role of the Malay language in South-East Asia has not changed. The role has not changed but the language itself must change to meet the challenges of modernization and the requirements of science and technology. While we treasure the past, we should also look to the future. We have to strike a balance between two critical requirements. On the one hand, we want the Malay language in Singapore to be international. On the other, we want the Malay language to help us develop our Singaporean identity. 2 First: the international requirement. -

A majority of local-born Chinese have inclined toward a Western rather than Chinese identity, with some scholars regarding English as Singapore’s “new mother tongue.” Other research has found a more local identity built on Singlish, a localized form of English which adopts expressions from the ethnic mother tongues. However, a re-emergent China and new waves of mainland migrants over the past two decades seem to have strengthened Chinese language ideologies in the nation’s linguistic space. This article revisits the intriguing relationships between language and identity through a case study of Chineseness among young ethnic Chinese Singaporeans. Kodrah Kristang: the Initiative to Revitalize the Kristang Language in Singapore

Cardoso, pp.35–121 http:/nflrc.hawaii.edu/ldc/sp19 2 http://hdl.handle.net/10125/24906 Kodrah Kristang: The initiative to revitalize the Kristang language in Singapore Kevin Martens Wong National University of Singapore Abstract Kristang is the critically endangered heritage language of the Portuguese-Eurasian community in Singapore and the wider Malayan region, and is spoken by an estimated less than 100 fluent speakers in Singapore. In Singapore, especially, up to 2015, there was almost no known documentation of Kristang, and a declining awareness of its existence, even among the Portuguese-Eurasian community. However, efforts to revitalize Kristang in Singapore under the auspices of the community-based non-profit, multiracial and intergenerational Kodrah Kristang (‘Awaken, Kristang’) initiative since March 2016 appear to have successfully reinvigorated community and public interest in the language; more than 400 individuals, including heritage speakers, children and many people outside the Portuguese-Eurasian community, have joined ongoing free Kodrah Kristang classes, while another 1,400 participated in the inaugural Kristang Language Festival in May 2017, including Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and the Portuguese Ambassador to Singapore. Unique features of the initiative include the initiative and its associated Portuguese-Eurasian community being situated in the highly urbanized setting of Singapore, a relatively low reliance on financial support, visible, if cautious positive interest from the Singapore state, a multiracial orientation and set of aims that embrace and move beyond the language’s original community of mainly Portuguese-Eurasian speakers, and, by design, a multiracial youth-led core team. -
Formation of a Malay Minority Agency in Singapore
Desire Bound: formation of a Malay minority agency in Singapore Yasuko Hassall Kobayashi May2006 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the Australian National University Introduction This thesis is a history of Malays in Singapore. It will show how Malays have attempted to locate themselves in Singapore society since Singapore's independence, by tracing the formation of a certain Malay psychological agency. The chief source of data is the Malay language newspaper Berita Harian I Berita Minggu, while the last part of the thesis mainly uses fieldwork participation and observation. As a theoretical framework the study uses Lacan's notion of psychological agency as further developed by Slavoj Zizek and Ghassan Hage. The study shows how Malays are motivated by a desire to be accepted as part of mainstream Singapore society. This drives them to perform a patterned set of conducts: examining themselves critically, detecting flaws and setting those problems as targets for improvement. They do this by their own initiative and for their own good, without necessarily being aware that their discourses and conducts are reconfirming the mainstream ideologies. This casts a new light on the notion of minority agency. It is commonly presumed that minorities are a seed of conflict and therefore tend to displace the centrality of the majority. This thesis shows that a certain type of ethnic minority agency does not do so but is in fact complicit with the goals of the majority or power holders while acting for itself to attain its own goals. Chapter 1 firstly explains a personal connection between the writer and the research topic, and outlines the position of Malays in Singapore. -

Transborder TheorIes and ParadIgms In EthnomusIcological StudIes of Folk MusIc: VIsIons for Mo Lam in Mainland Southeast Asia ThIs talk explores the nature and IdentIty of tradItIonal musIc, prIncIpally khaen musIc and lam performIng arts In northeastern ThaIland (Isan) and Laos. Mo lam refers to an expert of lam singIng who Is routInely accompanIed by a mo khaen, a skIlled player of the bamboo panpIpe. DurIng 1972 and 1973, Dr. ChonpaIrot conducted fIeld studIes on Mo lam in northeast Thailand and Laos with Dr. Terry E. Miller. For many generatIons, LaotIan and Thai villagers have crossed the natIonal border constItuted by the Mekong RIver to visit relatIves and to partIcipate In regular festivals. However, ChonpaIrot and Miller’s fieldwork took place durIng the fInal stages of the VIetnam War which had begun more than a decade earlIer. DurIng theIr fIeldwork they collected cassette recordings of lam singIng from LaotIan radIo statIons In VIentIane and Savannakhet. ChonpaIrot also conducted fieldwork among Laotian artists living in Thai refugee camps. After the VIetnam War ended, many more Laotians who had worked for the AmerIcans fled to ThaI refugee camps. ChonpaIrot delIneated Mo lam regIonal melodIes coupled to specIfic IdentItIes In each locality of the music’s origin. He chose Lam Khon Savan from southern Laos for hIs dIssertation topIc, and also collected data from senIor Laotian mo lam tradItion-bearers then resIdent In the United States and France. These became his main informants. -

chapter 4 The Nature of Sinitic Lexicon in Bazaar Malay and Baba Malay in Singapore Khin Khin Aye 1 Introduction Voluntary or involuntary, human migration is fundamental to Asian history and to the world in general. Wherever people migrate, they introduce their languages, cultures, religions and beliefs to the host communities. Chinese emigration to other countries started as early as 1000 CE. From the mid- nineteenth century, their migration to other countries has resulted in more than 30 million so-called “Overseas Chinese”, who live outside mainland China and include over 20 million people in Southeast Asia (Lockard 2013), affect- ing the world’s demographics, economy, culture, and language, just to name a few. In terms of population, according to Hay (2008), ethnic Chinese range between 0.8% and 76% of the population of each Southeast Asian nation. These numbers do not take into consideration partially assimilated Chinese in these communities. Ethnic Chinese make up 34% of the population (6 mil- lion) in Malaysia and 76% (2 million) in Singapore, the majority of whom are descendants of Hokkien speakers present since the early days of Singapore. Economic dominance of the Chinese is felt in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. As pointed out by Hays (2008), the econo- mies are mostly controlled by rich Chinese in these countries. Migration also set the stage for immigrant Chinese and host communities, who spoke a range of different languages, to communicate and interact. This required the people involved to tap into the full repertoire of languages at their disposal. As noted by the mainland Chinese novelist Wang Anyi 王安憶 in the context of Singapore and Malaysia, but equally valid for other Southeast Asian countries, “Hua people must endure speaking the language of another ethnic group” (Ng 2013: 84). -

Attitudes to Mandarin Chinese varieties in Singapore Francesco Cavallaro, Mark Fifer Seilhamer, Ho Yen Yee and Ng Bee Chin Nanyang Technological University This study aims to shed light on the attitudes of Chinese Singaporeans and Chinese nationals residing in Singapore to varieties of Mandarin Chinese. 64 Singaporean Chinese and Chinese national participants took matched and verbal-guise tests, evaluating recorded speakers of two varieties of Singapore Mandarin (standard and colloquial) and the variety spoken in the PRC on status and solidarity traits. These evaluations were followed by optional questionnaire items intended to probe for additional more insights into the participants’ atti- tudes and perceptions of one another. Both Singaporean Chinese and Chinese national participants assigned higher status to the PRC’s variety of Mandarin. Attitudes toward the two varieties of Singapore Mandarin, however, varied, with Singaporeans rating the standard variety higher than the colloquial variety on all traits and Chinese nationals favouring the colloquial variety. Interestingly, for all three varieties of Mandarin, solidarity traits were rated higher than status traits by all participants, suggesting that, in Singapore, Mandarin Chinese is now viewed more as a language of solidarity than status. Keywords: language attitudes, matched-guise, Putonghua, Singapore Mandarin, verbal-guise Introduction After explaining that he makes a conscious effort to speak Mandarin Chinese ac- cording to mainland China ‘standard’ pronunciation norms, Singaporean blogger Limpeh recounts an experience he had in a Singapore clothing store: Now the staff in there are very Chinese speaking (or Singlish speaking) – but it is distinctly Singaporean-Mandarin that they speak. One of the standard lines the shop assistants there use is this: “你可以 try!” Yeah, precisely in that combination. -
Racialisation in Singapore, Philippa Poole, 2016
CERS Working Paper 2016 Philippa Poole Racialisation in Singapore Introduction This essay will seek to establish an account of racialisation in Singapore since it became an independent sovereign state in 1965 until the present day. The working definition of racialisation adhered to in this process is racialisation as "the dynamic process by which racial concepts, categories and divisions come to structure and embed themselves in arenas of social life" (Law, 2010, p. 59). This will be achieved by critically assessing four key dimensions which demonstrate how the State privileges the Chinese-Singaporean majority, comprising 74.2% of the population (Muigai, 2010), and both directly and indirectly discriminates against the minority ethnic groups. These are primarily the Malay-Singaporeans, the Indigenous people of Singapore making up 13.4% of the population, but also Indian-Singaporeans (9.2%) and other ethnic groups including Eurasians (3.2 %) (Mugai, 2010). This essay relates to Barr's (2008) thesis, and will argue that since the 1980s Singapore has faced a period of Racial Sinicisation, whereby there is a growing hegemony celebrating Chineseness above all other groups. This is producing an assimilationist logic, but also involves racial marking by the State, the People's Action Party (PAP). This is despite the fact that Singapore is globally recognised as multicultural and a site of ethnic social and cultural harmony, having a diverse ethnic mix all crammed into an area of 682.7km² and not having faced communal riots since 1964 between the Chinese and Malay (Mugai, 2010). The first dimension explored will discuss how external influences have interacted with ongoing stereotypes about the different ethnic groups in Singapore (CMIO - Chinese, Malay, Indian and Other) and influenced State indirect and direct discriminatory policies. -

Branding is important in the aspect of ethnicity because it creates certain assumptions about an ethnic group. They try to show their identity by using several strategies both in explicit and implicit ways. However, Chinese themselves barely participate in Hollywood movies as the main characters. Crazy Rich Asians then appears as a movie that highlights the real-life portrayal of Chinese and diaspora in real life. Much of the plot conflict focuses on the Eastern- educated family welcoming Rachel, a Chinese-American as a part of them. Most of the main characters classify themselves as culturally Chinese, so they are playing Chinese ethnicity characters.
