In both China and Chinese diasporic communities around the world, education is of utmost importance and is central to childrearing in the family. In this paper, we address one of the most serious resettlement issues that new Chinese immigrants face—children’s education. We examine how receiving contexts matter for parenting, what immigrant parents do to promote their children’s education, and what enables parenting strategies to yield expected outcomes. Our analysis is based mainly on data collected from face-to-face interviews and participant observations in Chinese immigrant communities in Los Angeles and New York in the United States and in Singapore. We find that, despite different contexts of reception, new Chinese immigrant parents hold similar views and expectations on children’s education, are equally concerned about achievement outcomes, and tend to adopt overbearing parenting strategies. We also find that, while the Chinese way of parenting is severely contested in the processes of migration and adaptation, the success in promoting children’s educational excellence involves not only the right set of culturally specific strategies but also tangible support from host-society institutions and familial and ethnic social networks. -

The Study of Asian Languages in Two Australian States: Considerations for Language-in-Education Policy and Planning Yvette Slaughter Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2007 School of Languages and Linguistics University of Melbourne ABSTRACT This dissertation conducts a comprehensive examination of the study of Asian languages in two Australian states, taking into consideration the broad range of people and variables which impact on the language-in-education ecology. These findings are intended to enhance the development of language-in-education policy, planning and implementation in Australia. In order to incorporate a number of perspectives in the language-in-education ecology, interviews were conducted with a range of stakeholders, school administrators, LOTE (Languages Other Than English) coordinators and LOTE teachers, from all three education systems – government, independent and Catholic (31 individuals), across two states – Victoria and New South Wales. Questionnaires were also completed by 464 senior secondary students who were studying an Asian language. Along with the use of supporting data (for example, government reports and newspaper discourse analysis), the interview and questionnaire data was analysed thematically, as well as through the use of descriptive statistics. This study identifies a number of sociopolitical, structural, funding and attitudinal variables that influence the success of Asian language program implementation. An interesting finding to arise from the student data is the notion of a pan-Asian identity amongst students with an Asian heritage. At a broader level, the analysis identifies different outcomes for the study of Asian languages amongst schools, education and systems as a result of the many factors that are a part of the language-in-education ecology. -

MILES FAIRBURN University of Canterbury Dominating the relatively substantial literature on the history of the Chinese in New Zealand is the story of their mistreatment by white New Zealanders from the late 1860s through to the 1950s.1 However, the study of discrimination against the Chinese has now reached something of an impasse, one arising from the strong tendency of researchers in the area to advance their favourite explanations for discrimination without arguing why they prefer these to the alternatives. This practice has led to an increase in the variety of explanations and in the weight of data supporting the explanations, but not to their rigorous appraisal. In consequence, while researchers have told us more and more about which causal factors produced discrimination they have little debated or demonstrated the relative importance of these factors. As there is no reason to believe that all the putative factors are of equal importance, knowledge about the causes is not progressing. The object of this paper is to break the impasse by engaging in a systematic comparative evaluation of the different explanations to determine which one might be considered the best. The best explanation is, of course, not perfect by definition. Moreover, in all likelihood an even better explanation will consist of a combination of that best and one or more of the others. But to find the perfect explanation or a combination of explanations we have to start somewhere. -

Sarit's dictatorship does not seem to be unpopular. Corruptio in high places has not reached outrageous proportions yet. There is no atmosphere of repression and fear. The country is blessed with natural resources and much uncultivated land in relation to its people. There is misery in both urba and ural slums but something is being done about it and there is a general awareness that economic and social progress is uderway. The China policy of Thailand is most nearly like that of Korea, speaking only of places I have visited during this trip, but there are many differences in its origins and outlook. It is also a policy which is in harmony with United States policy, and one will be able to tell quite a lot about China policy in either country by looking at it in the other. In the attached paper I have attempted to summarize Thailand's relations with the two Chinas today and to discuss the prospects for change. -

Southeast Asian Traditions in the Philippines1 Lawrence A. Reid University of Hawai`i Introduction The Philippines today is home to over one hundred different ethnolinguistic groups. These range from the Arta, a tiny group of Negrito hunter-gatherers with only about a dozen remaining speakers, living under highly adverse conditions in Quirino Province, to the 12,000,000 or so Tagalogs, a very diverse group primarily professing Catholicism, centered around Metro-Manila and surrounding provinces, but also widely dispersed throughout the archipelago. In between there are a wide range of traditional societies living in isolated areas, such as in the steep mountains of the Cordillera Central and the Sierra Madre of Northern Luzon, still attempting to follow their pre-Hispanic cultural practices amid the onslaught of modern civilization. And in the Southern Philippines there are the societies, who, having converted to Islam only shortly before Magellan arrived, today feel a closer allegiance to Mecca than they do to Manila. These peoples, despite the disparate nature of their cultures, all have one thing in common. They share a common linguistic tradition. All of their languages belong to the Austronesian language family, whose sister languages are spread from Madagascar off the east coast of Africa, through the Indo-Malaysian Archipelago, scattered through the mountains of South Vietnam and Kampuchea as far north as Hainan Island and Taiwan, and out into the Pacific through the hundreds of islands of the Melanesian, Micronesian and Polynesian areas. The question of how all these languages are related to one another, where their parent language may have been spoken, and what the migration routes were that their ancestors followed to bring them to their present locations has occupied scholars for well over a hundred years. -

The Unknown History of New York City’s Chinatown: A Story of Crime During the Years of American Prohibition Kathryn Christensen: Undergraduate of History and Asian Studies at SUNY New Paltz Popular interpretations of immigrants in New York City during the era of Prohibition have looked at it through the lens of European immigrants. Groups such as the Italian Mafia, and Irish gangs in New York City are a well-rehearsed story within the history of Prohibition. However, Europeans were not the only immigrants that began to flood into the ports of New York City during the early 20th century. Within New York City’s Chinatown there was the emergence of a vast network of organized criminal activity, along with various raids revealing rice wine moonshine and other violations of the 18th amendment, just like their European counterparts. Though largely overlooked in the historiography, this paper argues that Chinatown,and the Chinese in New York City played an integral role in the Prohibition era United States. In order to understand the Chinese population that lived in the United States during the early 1900s, it is important to lay the framework for why they first came to the United States. Like many other immigrant groups that immigrated during this time, many Chinese came over to escape a difficult political and economic climate. In China, the Opium war left the Chinese defeated by the British Empire leaving its reputation as the protectorate and superpower of the East shattered. This was accompanied by famines and floods across the nation resulting in economic catastrophe which further resulted in civil war and several uprisings, most notably the Taiping Rebellion.1 The unstable environment in China caused several Chinese to flee the country. -

Jessica Yuan CASA 103 March 15, 2007 Dining Out in Chinatown: Uncovering the Archaeological Attributes of a Historical Overseas Chinese Restaurant Introduction Utilizing the Market Street artifact collection, this project will attempt to address the issue of what elements constitute a commercial dining establishment of the 19th century Chinatown. Investigating material remains from the Market Street Chinatown site in San Jose, I will explore the defining attributes that characterize historical Chinese restaurants in immigrant communities, with the aim of engendering a more complete understanding of how these restaurants can be identified in an archaeological context. My overarching research question is broken down into smaller, more specific components in my analysis. As there is presently no existing profile of the archaeological characteristics of a restaurant in a 19th century Chinese community, I will first need to formulate a profile on my own from documentary sources that I can use as a basis for evaluating remains from the Market Street Chinatown site. Next is an examination of the artifact profile of the materials recovered from another Market Street feature not associated with a commercial dining establishment. Then, analyzing a collection excavated from a feature that provenience and preliminary analysis suggest may have been connected to a formerly existent restaurant, I will endeavor to examine the validity of such a speculation of association by comparison with my tentative restaurant profile and the materials recovered from the other onsite feature representing a “non-restaurant” assemblage and serving as a control. This will enable an assessment of whether the collection of interest more closely resembles the artifact profile theorized for a restaurant or that of the control assemblage not related to commercial food service, and evaluation of which onsite assemblage was more consistent with the restaurant profile. -

What are the social settings that determine whether a mixed language, a pidgin, or a Creole will develop, and how can we under- stand the ways in which different languages contribute to the new grammar? Through the study of Malay contact varieties such as Baba and Bazaar Malay, Cocos Malay, and Sri Lanka Malay, as well as the Asian Portuguese ver- nacular of Macau, and China Coast Pidgin, the book explores the social and structural dynamics that underlie the fascinating phenomenon of the creation of new, or restructured, grammars. Chinese Influences in Philippine Culture
Miclat FEATURE ARTICLE Tradition, Misconception, and Contribution: Chinese Influences in Philippine Culture Maningning C. Miclat ABSTRACT This paper discusses Chinese influence on Philippine arts and crafts, as shown in artifacts from the Sino-Philippine trade of pre-Hispanic times—the churches, religious icons, and paintings of the Spanish period— and in the contemporary art of the Chinese Filipinos. The Chinese traditional elements are given new meanings in a new environment, and it is these misconceptions and misinterpretations of the imported concepts that influence and enrich our culture. THE PRE-HISPANIC PAST The Sino-Philippine trade is believed to have begun in AD 982. The History of the Sung Dynasty or Sung Shi, published in 1343- 1374, confirmed that trade contact started during the 10th century. A 13th century Sung Mandarin official, Chau Ju-kua, wrote a geographical work entitled “A Description of Barbarous Peoples” or Chu Fan Chi, the first detailed account on Sino-Philippine trade. The 14th century account of Ma Tulin entitled “A General Investigation of Chinese Cultural Sources” or Wen Shiann Tung Kuo referred to the Philippines as Ma-i.1 The presence of trade is further proven by the Oriental ceramics from China, Vietnam, and Thailand that have been excavated from many places in the archipelago (Zaide: 1990). The Chinese came to the Philippines and traded with the natives peacefully, exchanging Chinese goods with hardwood, pearls, and turtle shells that were valued in China. Traditional Chinese motifs that symbolize imperial power are found in the trade ceramics found in the Philippines. These are the 100 Humanities Diliman (July-December 2000) 1:2, 100-8 Tradition, Misconception, and Contribution dragon and the phoenix; auspicious emblems of prosperity, long life, and wealth, such as fishes, pearls, and blossoms, like peonies; and the eight precious things or Pa Bao, namely, jewelry, coins, open lozenges with ribbons, solid lozenges with ribbons, musical stones, a pair of books, a pair of horns, and the Artemisia leaf.
