Graduation 2017 5 A life-changing experience

An Essex education is a life-changing experience. Our 2017 graduates have shaped the University through their unique ideas and actions. They have risen to the challenge of developing a research mindset, they have been involved in clubs, societies and volunteering, and they have grasped opportunities. We can’t tell all their stories but these are just a few of our 2017 graduating student achievements.

Katie Groves (PhD Psychology) achieved Nick Sims Enrikas Balsys the incredible feat of distilling her 76,000 word thesis into a 450-word oral presentation to win the University of Essex Three Minute Thesis competition and take the runner-up slot at the national final, where she received a standing ovation.

Her research, which Katie hopes will ultimately lead to improvements in the treatment of eating disorders, has been published and recognised across the world – she has presented to thousands of academics at cognitive neuroscience conferences in Italy, Germany, Hungary, the UK and the USA.

Katie is currently working for the University as an Education Outreach Officer - encouraging those who never thought they could go to university to consider it.

“I struggled with my own self-confidence for years. It was only while I was doing my PhD that things started to change. My supervisor had such a strong belief in me, I began to realise ‘I can do this!’ Now I hope I can inspire Nick Sims (BSc Sports and Exercise Masters, added: “This programme has been others that they can do it too,” said Katie, Science) and Enrikas Balsys (BSc much more than just playing sport. 6 Graduation 2017 Katie Greenall Grace Duggan Siril Grini (BA English Literature) came to Essex to study English literature but also determined to grasp every opportunity on offer.

Volunteering has featured heavily – from one-off activities to co-ordinating an art club, which involved around 25 volunteers running weekly art classes in local primary schools. In her second year she clocked up more than 300 hours and was voted Students’ Union Volunteer of the Year.

She was accepted for an Essex Abroad volunteering opportunity at a nature reserve in South Africa, and used the University’s Click crowd-funding platform to raise the £1,500 needed for the trip.

“At Essex there are so many opportunities outside your academic work and I knew I needed to grab those opportunities while I had the chance. 8 Graduation 2017 Ellie Rutherford (BA Hotel Management) Ellie Rutherford is using the skills she learned at Edge Hotel School to design stunning, but practical, interiors for local pubs and restaurants.

When choosing her degree Ellie was torn between the arts and hospitality – she never dreamt she would be able to combine the two, but now she has done just that having landed a job at Harp Commercial Interiors. Within two years, she expects to be qualified in both interior design and project management.

“I love the concept of creating an idea and then bringing that vision to life. Harp Commercial Interiors works a lot with hotels, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Apart from studying hotel management, my parents have always run pubs, so I understand the layout and practicalities required.

“I am so glad I did this degree course, it gave me that extra push to get the job I have now. Without the degree I would not have had as much knowledge to bring to this role,” said Ellie, who went to Harp on work experience, after the company’s boss gave a presentation to Essex students about the importance of interior design to a successful hospitality business.

Graduation 2017 9 An Essex legend

A mythical animal has been one of the stars of our Graduation since our first ceremony in 1967.

You will be able to spot the legendary wyvern, with the head and wings of a dragon, on top of the priceless silver and gold Mace carried in front of the Chancellor or Presiding Officer as they enter Graduation 2017. The Mace signifies their authority to preside at the ceremony.

The stunning design is by the influential silversmith Professor Robert Goodden. At the Royal College of Art Professor Goodden led a resurgence in British craft and design in the aftermath of the Second World War, so was the perfect choice to create the Mace to mark the establishment of a new university in Essex. Elfreda Sanders, a former Colchester Borough Councillor and Mayor, presented it to the University in memory of her brother.

The Mace’s design uses the symbolism of our armorial bearings. The shaft of the Mace is cast in the shape of a young oak tree to represent the parkland of Wivenhoe and the ancient forest of Essex. The branches that grow from it pass through a ring or ‘annulet’, representing the letter ‘O’ and support the wyvern. This offers a heraldic rebus, or wordplay, (wyvern - O) upon the name Wivenhoe.

You can see other traces of the University’s founding years at Graduation 2017. The Chancellor’s Chair was a gift to Essex from the University of Oxford in May 1967 and created by another influential designer Professor Richard Drew Russell, who was consultant on furniture design for the University. The chair is made of figured solid English oak and its design reflects the importance of the Chancellor’s role.
