Surfing bliver OL-sport På IOC Sessionen i Rio i august besluttede IOC medlemmerne at optage fem nye sportsgrene på OL-programmet for Tokyo 2020, herunder shortboard surfing. For 4.

  • SURFING SOUTH AFRICA LOCKDOWN APPEAL MAY 11Th
PO BOX 127, RONDEBOSCH, 7701 – [email protected] APPEAL FOR CONSIDERATION OF SURFING AND OTHER OCEAN SPORTS TO BE PERMITTED AS EXERCISE UNDER LOCKDOWN PREAMBLE Surfing South Africa, the official representative of the sport of Surfing in South Africa, is a member of the South African Sports Council Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the International Surfing Association and partners with the World Surf League (WSL). The following disciplines fall under the Surfing South Africa umbrella: Surfing, Longboard Surfing, Bodyboarding, Kneeboarding, Para Surfing (Disabled) and Stand Up Paddlesurfing (SUP) are recognised affiliates. It is estimated that there are over 20,000 competitive and recreational surfers (all disciplines) in South Africa. Surfing is an ocean sporting activity that is carried out on the waves. All ocean sports, by their very nature, are naturally self-distancing. They require a person to have an existing level of expertise in the ocean and have minimal environmental impact. Some examples of Ocean Sports are Surfing, Longboarding, Bodyboarding, Para Surfing, Stand Up Paddle Surfing, Kneeboarding, Waveski, Surf Ski, Canoeing and Kayaking. All of the sports mentioned above are non-motorised, self - propelled and use the dynamic energy of waves to assist movement. 1. MOTIVATION 1. Ocean sports are only practiced in the ocean and there are relatively few venues where this can take place. 2. Ocean sportsmen and women do not congregate in groups. 3. Ocean sports do not involve any physical contact. 4. Ocean sports pose a lower health risk than cycling or running as any body fluids such as perspiration or saliva are immediately diluted in the sea water.

A translation by A.E. Hidden of the Queens University of Belfast indicates that they envisioned a “ship of the line” attached to shore by a gigantic lever, which would drive pumps or machinery. Twenty years earlier, however, a similar ship would cany back to England reports of a much older and more direct use of wave energy. The probable origins of surfing, which has since spread throughout the world, are described in The Surfer~sAlmanac, by Gary Fairmont R. Filosa II (New York: E.P. Dutton, 1977): Traveling a distance of almost 2,400 nautical miles from the South Pacific to the approximate geographic center of the North Pacific, two groups of settlers from Polynesia founded Hawaii. The first group in A.D. 400 came from the Marquesas; the second, ten centuries later, came from Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea. The Marquesans brought to their new Hawaiian home their ancient sport of pai~io- riding a wave on a small, rounded board while lying prone, the sport today called bellyboarding or kneeboarding.

A QUALITATIVE EXPLORATION OF FEMALE SURFERS: RECREATION SPECIALIZATION, MOTIVATIONS, AND PERSPECTIVES A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters of Science in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences by Tiyanya Anna Nourbakhsh December 2008 i Copyright© 2008 by Tiyanya Anna Nourbakhsh ii COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP TITLE: A Qualitative Exploration of Female Surfers: Recreation Specialization, Motivations, and Perspectives AUTHOR: Tiyanya Anna Nourbakhsh DATE SUBMITTED: December 29, 2008 COMMITTEE CHAIR: Dr. William W. Hendricks COMMITTEE MEMBER: Dr. Camille O’Bryant COMMITTEE MEMBER: Dr. Jeffrey A. Jacobs iii ABSTRACT A QUALITATIVE EXPLORATION OF FEMALE SURFERS: RECREATION SPECIALIZATION, MOTIVATIONS, AND PERSPECTIVES By Tiyanya Anna Nourbakhsh DECEMBER 2008 Chair: Dr. William Hendricks Major Department: Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration This current study utilized recreation specialization and leisure motivation theory to explore the meanings, perspectives, and behaviors among female surfers. Despite numerous studies previously published regarding recreation specialization and leisure motivation related to activity participation, little research has been conducted on the activity of surfing from a female perspective. Data for this study were collected using in- depth, semi- structured interviews of nine women surfers from the California Central Coast. Content analyses of the data involved coding and identifying key themes, patterns, and categories. The dominant themes significant within recreation specialization included past participation (e.g., preceding activities to eventual participation and wave/swell conditions), perceived skills (i.e., skills important to surfing, perceived skill level), commitment (e.g., central to life activity, central leisure activity, affective attachment, and adoption of social/cultural values), and enduring involvement (e.g., attraction and sensory enjoyment).

  • The Effect of Artificial Reef Configuration on Wave Breaking Intensity Relating to Recreational Surfing Conditions Craig Michael
THE EFFECT OF ARTIFICIAL REEF CONFIGURATION ON WAVE BREAKING INTENSITY RELATING TO RECREATIONAL SURFING CONDITIONS by CRAIG MICHAEL JOHNSON. A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY OF STELLENBOSCH Supervisor: D.E. Bosman Submitted for Approval in February 2009 Declaration By submitting this thesis electronically, I declare that the entirety of the work contained therein is my own, original work, that I am the owner of the copyright thereof (unless to the extent explicitly otherwise stated) and that I have not previously in its entirety or in part submitted it for obtaining any qualification. Signature Date Copyright c 2008 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved Abstract Multi purpose reefs are a relatively new concept that incorporate functionalities of beach stabilization, breakwater/seawall protection, biological enhancement and recreational amenity. Economic benefits increase their attractiveness. There is, however, some degree of uncertainty in design guidelines as to the predictability of each of these aspects. With regards to recreational amenity enhancement, one such uncertainty exists in the ability to predict the reef configuration required to give a certain degree of surfability of a reef, and more specifically, to predict the shape of a plunging wave. An extensive survey of the relevant literature has been conducted to provide a background on multi purpose reefs and the uncertainties in predicting the success of multi purpose reefs in achieving their design objectives. A study of wave breaking has been done, along with an analysis of existing breaker height and breaker depth formulae. The effects of bottom friction, re- fraction, shoaling, winds currents and varying water level on wave breaking has been addressed.

RISK-TAKING & POSTMODERNITY: COMMODIFICATION & THE ECSTATIC IN LEISURE LIFESTYLES The Case of Surfing By Mark James Anthony Stranger B.A. (Hons) Submitted in fulfilinent of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Tasmania (August, 2001) s " Declaration of Originality This thesis does not contain any material which has been accepted for a degree or diploma by the University or any other institution, except by way of background information and duly acknowledged in the thesis, and to the best of the candidates knowledge and belief no material previously published or written by another person except where due acknowledgement is made in the text of the thesis. Mark Stranger . Statement of Authority of Access This thesis may be made available for loan and limited copying in accordance with the Copyright Act 1968. Mark Stranger . Abstract The thesis is a study of surfing in Australia. It examines the surfing subculture and its relationship with the dominant culture; the risk-taking orientation of its bodily practices and the role they play in the construction of individual and group identity and social formations; and the multi dimensional relationships between the surfing culture industry, surfing's sports bureaucracy, bodily practices, social configurations and subcultural integrity. The study is based on the hypothesis that the surfing subculture in Australia is a distinctly posbnodem configuration but one which displays a level of stability not accounted for in posbnodem theory. It informs current debates over the nature of the self and society in postmodernity. The scope of the research was national because previous studies of surfing, both in Australia and the USA, suffered from too narrow a scope; either focussing on one sector or geographic area.
