1. Fredericton Mayoral Candidates to Debate the Arts at the FAA’s Public Forum Apr 19

The arts, in all their rich variety, form an important part of the Fredericton community and of its economy. The city’s government has a significant role to play in encouraging and supporting the arts in the city: music, writing, dance, visual arts, drama, film, and rich combinations of all of them. That’s why the Fredericton Arts Alliance has organized a public forum at which the candidates for mayor are invited to present their views and answer questions.

The forum will take place on Tuesday, April 19 from 7 to 10pm in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Auditorium.

The city’s official culture plan, approved in July 2014, has five objectives:

1. Highlight the value of culture to the social and economic fabric of Fredericton; 2. Motivate the City and its stakeholders to a plan of action; 3. Set a framework of goals and specific actions for the City that unlock organizational, individual, and financial capital; 4. Guide civic decision-makers and cultural stakeholders in operational changes and investments, and link cultural initiatives to wider City planning; 5. Improve the lives of Frederictonians

Where do the candidates stand on achieving those objectives? Susanne Alexander, the publisher of Goose Lane Editions will moderate the discussion. Both candidates, Mayor Brad Woodside and Councillor Mike O’Brien have confirmed their intention to participate. Light refreshments will follow the forum.

For more information contact Katie FitzRandolph, President, Fredericton Arts Alliance at 478-8045 or [email protected]. Back to top.

2. Tickets on Sale Now: The Capital Complex presents Radio Radio Live Jun 3

The Capital Complex is pleased to announce Radio Radio live at The Capital on Friday, June 3 as they tour their new album, Light The Sky.

Since their first releases Télé Télé EP (2007) and Cliché Hot (2008), New Brunswick’s Gabriel Louis Bernard Malenfant and Nova Scotia’s Jacques Alphonse Doucet have impressed journalists and the public alike with their catchy hip-hop/electro-flavored hooks. Their second album Belmundo Regal was short-listed for the 2010 Polaris Music Prize and the duo won a slew of other awards such as an Independent Music Award for Rap/Hip Hop Album (2011), a Miroir for Best Hip-Hop/Urban Performance at the Festival d'été de Québec, a Révélation Musique 2010-2011 Radio-Canada title, as well as a Félix for Hip-Hop Album of the Year for their third full-length, Havre de Grâce (2012).

Having grown up in an environment where Anglophones rub shoulders with Francophones on a daily basis, the Acadian duo then offered their first album entirely in English Light the Sky in February 2016 which they are currently touring across Canada. The music on this latest album was produced by Shash’U, DJ Champion, J.u.D. and Alex McMahon.

Over the past few years, Radio Radio have become a must-see act, having performed at several top notch music festivals including, FrancoFolies de Montréal, the Festival d'été de Québec, the Festival International de Louisiane, SXSW, and the CMJ Music Marathon, including several festivals in France and Belgium.

Tickets are on sale now, and are $20 Incl HST and fees, or $25 at the door. Use promo code: DANCEFLOOR and save $3 online at https://goo.gl/5LMwHQ or in person through the Etixnow kiosk located in the lobby of Isaac’s Way Restaurant, located at 649 Queen St (across from the Playhouse).

3. UNB Art Centre presents Supplemental Events related to Pieces of the Past Exhibition Apr 7 – May 7

The UNB Art Centre is proud to announce a series of upcoming events related to our current exhibition, Pieces of the Past (running until May 13). In conjunction with this exhibition, we will be hosting a theatrical performance, a book reading, a film screening, and an “antiques roadshow” style show-and-tell afternoon.

ARTSnews April 14, 2016 4 Volume 17, Issue 15

First, on Friday April 8 at 7:30pm, in the Memorial Hall auditorium, Fredericton-based actress Maria Bourgeois will stage a performance of To Live Dangerously. Part séance, part play, this performance will call forth the spirit of Lucy Jarvis, and bring her back to the UNB Art Centre once more! Through conversations with Lucy Jarvis’ remaining relatives and extensive research, Maria has been channelling Lucy’s energy, emotions, and creativity as she creates her one-woman show. In the story-telling tradition of her native Newfoundland, Maria Bourgeois uses theatre to tell stories about people and their history. To Live Dangerously explores Lucy Jarvis’ connection with the UNB Art Centre, and the spark of danger she felt as she fell in love with art for the first time at the age of 8. The UNB Art Centre gratefully acknowledges support for this project from the City of Fredericton.

On Wednesday, April 13 at 12pm, author Roslyn Rosenfeld will read from her newly launched book Even Stones Have Life. Co-published by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and Goose Lane Editions, this book is an examination of Lucy Jarvis’ considerable body of creative work – the subjects of her paintings, her choices of medium and expression. Rosenfeld’s book celebrates the contribution Lucy Jarvis (and her colleague Pegi Nicol MacLeod) made to the burgeoning Fredericton art community through the UNB Art Centre. In the time before major institutions like the Beaverbrook Art Gallery or the Fredericton Playhouse opened, Jarvis and McLeod helped launch the Fredericton art scene by making creativity available to all.

On Wednesday, April 20, at 12pm the UNB Art Centre will screen the film Something Dancing About Her (National Film Board of Canada, 2005), celebrating the life and art of Pegi Nicol MacLeod. This affectionate film chronicles Pegi’s whirlwind life and artistic journey. Using personal letters and archival photographs, this film uncovers Pegi Nicol MacLeod’s energetic and rebellious personality. Please join us as we celebrate how the UNB Art Centre was shaped by the dynamic personas of Pegi Nicol MacLeod and Lucy Jarvis!

Finally, on Saturday, May 7, at 1pm, the UNB Art Centre will host Finding Lucy Jarvis Antiques Roadshow. Join author and curator Roslyn Rosenfeld, as well as Lucy Jarvis’s nephews Allison and Mark Connell, for an antiques roadshow style event. Rosenfeld and the Connells have collected many historical artefacts and pieces of memorabilia about her life. Participants are invited to join our knowledgeable panel, and to bring their own collectables for appraisal and a discussion of their history and provenance. In particular, the panel is looking for any works by Lucy Jarvis that may be in our community – if you have a piece you think might have been created by Lucy, bring it along and let our experts tell you where they fit in the evolution of Jarvis's career.

The exhibition, Pieces of the Past runs until May 13 at the UNB Art Centre. The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick. The galleries are open 9am - 4pm weekdays and for special events. Admission is free to members of the public. Everyone welcome! For further information, please contact Marie Maltais, Director UNB Art Centre at 453-4623. Back to top.

8. Out of Bounds Opening Reception in The Charlotte Glencross Gallery Apr 15

Correction: This exhibit runs from April 15 to May 2, 2016, and not April 14 to May 2 as our previous issue stated.

Featuring photographs by graduating students of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) Photography Diploma program, this exhibition will run from April 15 to May 2. An opening reception is being held on Thursday, April 15 from 5 - 7pm at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre’s Charlotte Glencross Gallery.

Out of Bounds combines the creative photographic experience of ten emerging artists from the 2016 graduating class of NBCCD. The artists are students from the Photographic Entrepreneurship: Gallery and Marketplace class. As a part of their studies, the students were challenged to organize and curate this exhibition. In doing so, they gained behind-the-scenes knowledge required to prepare and display their art, how to use their art to earn a living, and other essential skills as they embark on their photographic careers.

Out of Bounds represents their emergence into the art scene as they break beyond their previous boundaries and discover the experience of working as professional artists. Using an eclectic mix of styles and techniques, each artist has set out to create two unique pieces explicitly for showing at the gallery. Throughout their time at the college, the students learn and work together as a creative, cohesive community. Although they learn the same skills, they all form uniquely individual styles and interests, and they all work as a team to help each other reach their full potential.

The show features NBCCD graduating students Joseph Comeau, Natasha Hoskins, Trudi Jardine, Katelyn Roy, Bailey Rogers, Dale Strickland, Alexandrea Tarrant, Jamie Ward, Katlyn Ward, and Jiaqian (Genesis) Zhang. Back to top.

9. Silk Perception Opening Reception in the Penny Gallery at the CSAC Apr 15

Silk Perception is an exhibition of work by Gina Solomon, a student graduating from NBCCD's Graduate Studies Program. The images have been transformed into silk and detailed with stitching as a way of showing the colours and details the artist sees and wishes to convey. Silk, although perceived to be soft and delicate, is also strong and can be bold in its ability to hold colour. In painting the silk Gina works with the nature and flow of the silk, allowing it to manipulate the image outcome. The silk gives its own perception to the work.

This opening reception takes place in the Charlotte Street Art Centre’s Penny Gallery on April 15 from 5-7pm. Back to top.

20. The NB Film Co-Op Celebrates National Canadian Film Day Apr 20

Remember Wednesday, April 20, 2016 7:30pm Tilley Hall, UNB Campus, Fredericton NB 95 mins, CANADA, 2015, English Free Of Charge

The Monday Night Film Series, in conjunction with National Canadian Film Day, presents a free screening of Remember, the contemporary story of Zev, (Academy Award® Winner Christopher Plummer), who discovers that the Nazi guard who murdered his family some 70 years ago is living in America under an assumed identity, on April 20 at 7:30pm in Tilley 102.

Master filmmaker Atom Egoyan (Ararat, The Sweet Hereafter) tackles one of the darkest chapters of 20th-century history in the gripping thriller Remember, which gives legendary actor Christopher Plummer (Elsa & Fred, Beginners) a majestic role as an elderly Holocaust survivor seeking revenge on the man responsible for the deaths of his family.

Plummer plays Zev, a recent widower whose deteriorating mental state forces him to be placed under permanent care. When he discovers that the concentration-camp guard who murdered his relatives is now living in America under an assumed identity, Zev resolves to fulfill his final vow to his wife by exacting vengeance on the escaped war criminal.

With the support of his friend Max (Martin Landau, Lovely, Still, Ed Wood), Zev sets out on his mission with grim purpose, but his quest for retribution leads to unexpected results. Working from an original script by first time screenwriter Benjamin August, Egoyan generates nerve-shredding suspense as the unlikely avenger pursues the demon from his past. Plummer is remarkable as the driven Zev, and the stellar supporting cast — which also includes Henry Czerny (TV’s The Tudors, Fido), Jürgen Prochnow (TV’s 24, Das Boot), Bruno Ganz (The Reader, Downfall) and Breaking Bad’s Dean Norris as a neo-Nazi state trooper — help make Remember one of the most compelling thrillers in recent memory.

On Saturday, April 23 at 7:30pm, nine-piece string ensemble Collectif9 will perform classical music with rock-style charisma at the Fredericton Playhouse. Covering everything from Gagnon to Golijov, passing through Brahms and Schnittke, the Collectif9 experience is unlike any other. The group combines boldness and the highest of musical standards with amplification and lighting to create an organic classical sound, presented with all the power you’d expect from a rock concert.

Since forming in Montreal in 2011, this young group has connected with a culturally curious audience thanks to their diverse repertoire and unparalleled drive. Between bursts of energy and dreamlike states, many of Collectif9’s pieces are original arrangements that have rarely been played on the same program. Between an online video series called LIVEshorts, featuring performances in unique settings, and the release of their well-received debut album Volksmobiles earlier this year, Collectif9 continues to push the boundaries of classical music.

Tickets for Collectif9 are available through the Fredericton Playhouse box office by calling 458-8344, or online at www.theplayhouse.ca. Back to top.

32. Zita Cobb Lecture & Film Screening of Strange & Familiar at the Fredericton Playhouse Apr 29

On April 29, the Architects' Association of New Brunswick is very pleased to invite the public to a momentous free public event: an illustrated talk by Zita Cobb of Fogo Island, Newfoundland, and a screening of the 2014 documentary Strange & Familiar: Architecture of Fogo Island about the renaissance she spearheaded on the island. This film documents the bold architecture project on this remote island, embracing the excitement of living on the edge in relation to contemporary architecture and design.

Audacious social entrepreneur Zita Cobb is the driving force behind the astounding rebirth of the small Newfoundland community of Fogo Island, which has become one of the world’s most remarkable cultural destinations. Zita has dedicated her time and money to the creation of not only a spectacular inn and artists’ studios, but also a hugely fruitful social and community experiment. Central to the project’s success, Gander-born architect Todd Saunders' sculpture-like artist studios perched on the rocky shores of Fogo Island have been documented in more than 80 international publications as one of the most celebrated architectural initiatives of the 21st century.

Zita engaged the entire community of Fogo, encouraging them to contribute century’s worth of local knowledge to the project – from local women hooking the rugs and sewing the quilts for the buildings, to the local men turning the furniture and painting the woodwork. She will be speaking of her love for this tiny, thriving island at the edge of Canada, the story behind her community engagement and cultural vision, followed by an audience Q & A. Back to top.

36. Theatre New Brunswick Name their New Venue: Open Space Theatre

Last fall Theatre New Brunswick introduced a new performance venue into Fredericton’s thriving arts and cultural landscape. Located in the company’s headquarters at 55 Whiting Road in Fredericton, the intimate 98-seat theatre played host to the first three productions of the company’s 2015-2016 season. Today, Theatre New Brunswick officially named the venue, the Open Space Theatre.

Planning for this project has been ongoing for the past few years. TNB General Manager Susan Ready has overseen all aspects of the $150,000 renovation project from inception through the many stages of design and construction. Further renovations of the company’s building planned for the summer months include a new rehearsal studio which will be home to the TNB Theatre School, new washrooms, dressing rooms and a complete makeover of the building’s facade, made possible through a recent grant from the City of Fredericton’s Community Funding Grants Program.

Outside of TNB’s regular programming, other successful events were held at the venue over the past six months including a sold-out musical performance, a four night theatre performance by Fredericton’s Next Folding Theatre Company and a two day residency by Saint John contemporary dance company, Connection Dance Works. ARTSnews April 14, 2016 13 Volume 17, Issue 15

The introduction of the Open Space Theatre marks another step forward for Fredericton’s growing arts ecology. Located minutes from the city’s downtown core, this new performance venue proves that meaningful and professional arts experiences are no longer confined to the downtown district.

Photos are available upon request. Tours of the space and interviews with Artistic Director Thomas Morgan Jones and General Manager Susan Ready can be arranged by contacting Matt Carter, Development and Communications, at 460-1381 (Ext. 113) or [email protected]. Back to top.
